I'm sure we've all had this happen. You really enjoy something be it art, sports, work etc but then you come across a bit of information that ruins it by association.

A fairly recent one of these moments for me was watching the music video for Tainted Love. I have very fond memories of listening to it with my sister on our old sports radio in our cottage treehouse during the summer. It's one of my ultimate nostalgic songs.

Then I recently came across the music video.
watch?v=ZeJkbqjQvnk
When it isn't funny, it's uncomfortable. The voice did give me the image of someone more aggressive and in-control of the situation which enabled them to get away from the bad place they're in. This video gave me a wimpy spoiled brat that is heavily implied to be involved in the classical Greek tradition of pederastry. What makes the implied pedophilia funny is that the song is about how she has control over him and is a slave to his emotions. His ranting while throwing a hissy fit are complete with his slave going "OOOOOOOHHHHH" (superimposed with a hilarious bug-eyed expression) as if a sick burn having never before graced the ears of the gods was being delivered.

To a 10 year old girl.

From a 20-something-year-old manchild.

So now I can't listen to the song without laughing or cringing.

What are your moments of personal ruination?

Lots of stuff is ruined by its fanbase. Like all the John/Sherlock shippers in the Sherlock fandom. Call me elitist, but I think you should be a fan of the actual show. Not the imaginary yaoi you pretend it's going to be.

Man that video.

But yeah, that's about an illegitimate child not paedophilia.

And, umm, I would've thought the singer would be more interested in the black dude than his wife anyway.

And wtf was with the cricket guy?

OT: Loved Final Fantasy 8 as a kid, watched Spoony's damning review as an adult and thought "yeah it was kind of dumb but it wasn't that bad." Played it again as an adult after this and thought "god this is fucking stupid." My enjoyment of the game isn't completely ruined but it is diminished and relies a lot more on mocking laughter than it used to.
You really wouldn't need a reviewer to come to that conclusion, though. I can't even enjoy it mockingly.

I tend not to care or let anything like that ruin stuff by association.
For example, I hate Jamie Oliver's persona/Personality. But god damn I would eat his food and damn well enjoy it.
Or hating Reddit's community, voting system and everything else about it almost but using it for any new information on games if an update comes out. I can take the good and just ignore the bad fairly easily.

I can't think of a time I have ever liked something, but changed my mind on it due to something it is associated with. I even still love Halo despite Halo 4. If that's not commitment I don't know what is.

This years Royal Rumble and the WWE in general. After and during watching it, I was pumped up and happy.

After wanting to talk to people about it, though... All I found was whining and crying about how their favorite super star didn't win.

The same goes for Hearthstone and liking Hunter. After talking to a bunch of people about how Hunter is just some skill-less class that needs no brain thought for playing, I gave up.

I hate to use this word... but entitled seems to be the main phrase now-a-days. After that fiasco with ME3, people realized that if they whined, bitched, and moaned enough, they could get things changed. Like a whole bunch of spoiled children.

He was the other half of the band. Compared to some videos from the early 80s its quite sane

I cherish my enjoyment of things too much to allow for such things to affect me. I also tend to dismiss most fan-made material and reviews since all those are just other people's opinions not any more valid than mine and I prefer my opinion of the material to be as pure as possible. The less tainted it becomes by materials outside of the actual experience of playing or watching or listening to the item in question, the more accurate of a depiction of MY liking/disliking of the item in question it is.

People often tend to mistake people's personal opinions as more significant than they really are when they're in the form of a video or an article or something along those lines. Just because someone has the funds or the education or the connections that allow them to make such content it does not mean that they're any more likely to be correct about a subject as subjective as how much you enjoy something is than you would be.

The Land before Time due to what happened to the voice actress who played Ducky afterward. As if the film was already sad enough!

Reading and enjoying Ender's Game and it's sequels, and then later finding out Orson Scott Card is a racist, conspiracy-crazed, religiously extremist lunatic.
I mean the books are great, and even though the later ones dabble in Sci-Fi philosophy like introducing a soul particle, it never felt like it was written by a man who's convinced that "Obama funds street gangs to shoot young republicans on their way to political meetings" and such.
But once I read some of the crazy stuff he believes, I couldn't stop imagining what aspects of the book are based on which delusions.

There was a period of time I HATED Sherlock because every single time I mentioned it some idiot would ask "So are you a JohnLock shipper?" And I became ashamed to even talk about it because people would think I was a sex-obsessed shipper who only watched it for something that I felt wasn't there (not to mention Watson says no fewer than three times that he isn't gay).

Same thing with Portal; I couldn't bring it up without a stupid "cake is a lie" meme being slipped into the conversation. Let's ignore EVERYTHING ELSE because omigod the cake is a lie.

This is what happened eventually, though. I just ignore anything that could negatively impact my feelings on something I'm incredibly fond of. I don't associate with fanbases anymore because the word just leaves a sour, stupid taste in my mouth.

HEAR THAT YOU STUPID FANBASE. YOU CAN NEVER CONVINCE ME THAT RHYSXJACK IS A GOOD COUPLE. -shakes fist menacingly-

while it doesn't outright ruin it for me, constant exposure to 'fan service' (and the implications behind why it's so common), as well as the very existence of lolicon as a... Thing, makes liking anime feel really awkward at times...

It's especially awkward knowing I like things which aren't in themselves lolicon or the like, but which have creators behind them some of which are knowm for creating such works as well...

Kinda awkward seeing something and realising that there's probably chikd porn around with similar artistic quirks to it as what you are watching at that moment... (not that lolicon is child porn as such, if you want to be really technical about it. A drawing isn't the same as using real children, but still... )

Well... people can have whatever headcanon they wish, mine is sealed in a vault, atop a mountain, buried beneath a castle made of Hijarna stone (see: Star Wars EU, specifically the Thrawn Trilogy), protected by invincible goat warriors. In otherwords, my headcanon is so strong, no one elses views can taint it. However, if someone comes along with a truly plausible and believable idea, backed up by mountains of evidence (mountains are hyperbole for credible, but it can also be a literal mountain if one can find that much), then I am more than willing to edit my headcanon for posterity's sake.
So in essence, no one can ruin an experience for me except that one assjack that thinks bringing infants to movies that aren't kids movies whatsoever is a good idea. Those people are horrible horrible, selfish ass folks. Esp. the ones who won't take the kid OUT OF THE DAMN THEATER.
Sorry for shouting.

I associate with certain fanbases but I never yield nor do I accept that I don't like what I like simply cause lots of other people who claim to be in the fandom (but dislike 85% of the contents of that same fandom) say about it.

Stuff like FFXIII or Senran Kagura or other similar things which people who proclaim being fans of like to badmouth incessantly. I'm more than happy to explain what I loved about those things in a way that dismisses all the nonexistent issues.

Don't worry, I was happy, happy that the crowd boo'd the match for 30 minutes straight. The match was stank, there were 0 memorable spots, the fan favourites were treated like complete losers and the guy who won didn't do anything in the match(unlike last year). And fucking Big Show and Kane were in the final 4 in 2014, doing the exact same spot they did in 2006.

I don't know what you'd be happy for, no one looked good in that rumble.
This is what I'm talking about. I don't watch for years and people expect me to understand/want to care about the inner working of the entire franchise. Yeah, I'll totally listen to the majority of fans when they whine and complain. I found the entire Rumble fun, entertaining, and just down right enjoyable. People like you are the reason we almost had a grown ass man cry on live TV. You're also the reason we have Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns running around being stupid. Seriously. Mr. "fan favorite" Daniel Bryan just looks like a self entitled whiner that thinks he needs everything for himself. As an old school fan returning to watching, this is exactly what it looks like.

See... and I thought that Roman was a fan favorite. No. Once DB got eliminated people stopped caring.
