With recent devolpments such as HD-3D video and surround sound home theatre systems, is there anything companies can try to increase immersion? This is a demon that i have fallen to before: oblivion addiction, flinching when suprised and so on. But now VGDs (video game developers) have a new idea: Physical video-games. This is the premise of rumble in controllers. Ideas such as the KOR-fx rumble pack from http://www.immerz.com/ have made clumsy steps into the VG accessories market. The thought behind the product is that it would deliver a punch or similar feeling, perhaps when struck by a bullet in COD. If this were mandatory (and ridiculously powerful)it would prevent idiots from running aroung and getting shot while bringing down the team. Would this item really increase immersion in your favorite video game?

EDIT:
Typo fix and re-format

Forgot to add, Kinect is a very primitive example. It attempts to remove the need for a controller, creating a virtual environment. It has excellent potential, but no games ATM.

New interface =/= better chance at immersion. Good games are immersive, something with a great story and a game world that feels 'alive'. Games like Mass Effect 2 and Okami, where I can start playing, and before I realise it, 8 hours have passed. That's immersion.

I think that nothing would take me out of the experience faster than having to wear a vest that delivers a light punch every now and then. I think the best way to deliver immersion really is just to create an engaging game, in terms of both story and gameplay. It's worked for books and movies for years, although obviously minus the gameplay part.

Edit: Ninja'd, damn.

Heh, I was going to say the exact same thing.

I guess because it's pretty much the only correct answer?

I agree with the fact that "the best way to deliver immersion really is just to create an engaging game." This is very true, nothing ruins a game faster than a terrible narritive.

I pulled a couple all-nighters on those games, very immersive.

A bit off topic, but I have a mildly amusing story.

Was playing Jade Empire Special Edition on PC, and getting into it.
Then something went BZZZZ and fell off the table.

Apparently the game activates the rumble on my controller even though I wasn't using it.

It's more immersive the less I am aware of what's going on around me.

If the fucking controller's rumbling in my hands then it just gets annoying, and it's even worse when they try and relate it specifically to events on-screen.

Hahah

I once had a rumble joystick for playing Allegiance: my roomate decided to try it and when i came back i asked how the game was. He said: "huh? what? who the hell is that! and why am I holding a dildo?" Ahh the things immersion can do to people.

I remember on Zelda OOT The Stone of Agony "a magical stone that will vibrate when an unseen secret is close to its holder" at the time that seemed pretty cool! Its a bit "old hat" now!

I'd like to se somtehing which delivers electric shocks or other painful stimuli everytime you get hit/shot/whatever.

Would be kind of hardcore to play any average FPS when you have to factor in your real fear of pain into everything you do in the game. >:D
