Okay, how has this question not been posed yet?

Will it be marketed as the Nintendo 2DS?

but seriously now: you can turn the 3D off on the 3DS, will this 2DS not have a 3D slider? Where will the other circle pad go? They already have the DSi, so will the 2DS just be a DSi with 3DS game compatibility? That doesn't seem to warrant a brand new system. That wouldn't be a bad way of going about it... It would also have to be about the same price as the DSi since the DSiXL is the same price as the 3DS.

I think Nintendo just has to stick with the 3DS and show people that it works.

People didn't like the Kinect, but as a user interface I really like it, and that's because Microsoft isn't backing down.

Wow, more proof that no one, ever, under any circumstances, should be an early adopter of Nintendo hardware.
I was never going to buy it. Not at it's current price definitely. I was worried about the 3D not working on me because I have all sorts of eye problems and binocular vision. Well, I want to GameStop and they had a display model for Oot3D and I spent ten minutes trying to see it and nearly made myself puke in store.

I think we're looking at the new Virtual Boy her folks, at least it is for me. I can definitely wait for a better DS since I would be dumb to pay for the 3D portion.

Not aimed at me, but I can answer that question:
It's not a bad piece of hardware at all. Physically, it handles just like the DS Lite (a bit heavier). The operating system is easy to use and I can actually use it in the daylight (lamp/LCD screens are notorious for creating glare because they compete with other natural light sources). The audio quality is pretty damned nice too plus I can play my music on it if I wanted to. It accepts standard SD cards up 32GB (IIRC); no proprietary bullshit there.

But of course, it's rather disappointing when you realize that there is FUCK ALL to play on it and as everyone and their mum have pointed out before, this is the real sticking point.

The 3DS has strong potential for good handheld games (just like the DS and GBA before it), but again, if nobody develops for it, it ends up with the same problems as every other Nintendo product since the Gamecube: Strong 1st party support; virtually non-existent 3rd party support outside of the useless shovelware business.
(Yes, that includes the Wii. The Wii thrived because it was lucky to reach fad-status early in its lifetime)

First of all: this is only a RUMOR. Do not hate on Nintendo just yet. That comes later, if you absolutely feel you must, once these rumors are confirmed.

Second, who cares if Nintendo releases a new 3DS? Apple products are released every year, and no one seems to mind. Plus, you are not getting screwed if you buy an inferior version at a high price; you are getting your money's worth by being able to use your 3DS earlier than everyone else, inferior or not.

Welp, I'm glad I choosing to buy Nintendo consoles until way later. I'll do the same with the Wii-U. God help Nintendo if the thing bombs.
Seriously? No home console from Nintendo has ever had an updated iteration in the same way that Nintendo's handhelds do. The NES, the Super NES, the N64, the Gamecube, and the Wii have never had a major re-release similar to the DS Lite, the Gameboy Advance XP, or the PS3 Slim.

So a (hopefully) cheaper, less 3D centric 3DS with another analog stick?

........Fiiiinally. Ok, now I'm finally interested. Just get that one out, (hopefully with longer battery life too while they're at it), and make sure Kid Ikarus allows us to use that other analog stick (I'm a lefty, see?), and they'll FIIIINALLY have my money.

...Seriously, though Nintendo. You need to shape up a bit. You're losing the faith and goodwill of your customers. You'll need to get that back if you plan to successfully launch the WiiU. ...And you can start by making it Rain. ...You know what I mean. Just do it already.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. I honestly don't know why so many people automatically perceive rumors as true.

Sigh, it's just a rumor. Nintendo themselves said it's just rumor and speculation [http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/29799/redesigned-3ds-is-rumour-and-speculation-nintendo/]. DON'T believe anything until we get official word from Nintendo.

OT: Nintendo, for the sake of your marketshare...

[sub]Perhaps it was a good thing I was too damn poor to buy it when it first came out and still am too poor now.[/sub]
That's the thing. It's not a bad handheld. In fact it's a pretty decent piece of hardware. But when I spent £200 on the thing 5 months or so ago only for Nintendo to;

a) Drop the price
and
b) Announce a better version less than a year since the original

Is just starting to annoy me. I know my second point is basic marketing but because of the 3DSs low sales, I know it's Nintendo saying;
"We didn't do proper market research to find out what people actually would buy! Now we are going to panic and fix as many things as we can, as quickly as we can and screw over loyal fans who were stupid enough to buy this on launch!"

And you know what the most idiotic thing is? I'm not even a Nintendo fanboy! I hate my Wii and am tired of Mario remakes. I was a PS3 and 360 gamer whom Nintendo had actually managed to grab my attention with the 3DS only to laugh at me for it. Well rest assured Nintendo, it won't happen again from this pissed off Scot!

a control scheme redesign is all well and good, but you know what would really help the 3DS? Games.

If this is legit I might actually be interested in the redesigned version. It's about time companies realized that 3D does absolutely nothing.

Then again, I still have a perfectly functioning DS. We'll see.

I don't know why having an opinion about a rumor is perceived as "perceive rumors as true".

It's a rumor but it's open for discussion. Discussing it does not mean people think the rumor is true, some might think the rumor is true but not everyone discussing it.

I wonder how many people will post "it's just a rumor" in this thread.

BTW, as of now I haven't posted an opinion about this rumor so I have no dog in this fight yet. I just get sick of people pretending that discussion is not allowed on a rumor. Did it occur to you that Nintendo released this rumor just to gauge the response?

So... they are basically making it more like a Vita, but with SOME 3D and lower fidelity graphics?

Nintendo denying rumors doesn't really mean anything.

My god, what's it gonna to take to get this site to drop the Captcha? I had to refresh 3 times this time to get something readable. I am sure they are paying someone to have Captcha, maybe they should demand that it be readable. After all, I would be upset if I ordered food and got something that wasn't edible.

Anyway, as for this RUMOR. It sounds extreme but Nintendo is in a bad spot. The Wii-U doesn't have investors excited, the 3DS is failing, the DS is about to run it's course and the Wii already has. Nintendo has some tough times ahead.

I know that games are needed on the 3DS but I think 3D is just a turn off for alot of people and they won't buy a 3DS just to turn the main feature off. A second analog nub would be cool because the Vita has it and right now Vita is looking alot better than the 3DS to alot of people.

This nonsense "you can turn the 3D off" is like saying you can turn the second screen of the DS off. You can't but even if you could, it would defeat the purpose of buying a DS (DS = Dual Screen just like 3DS = 3D).

The 3DS was DOA and will remain so. Nintendo is in trouble for the foreseeable future, they might be thinking of trashing the 3DS and making something closer to the Vita.

You know what? If I defend the 3ds I'm just going to get flamed. I just that I personally will buy the new model and trade my old one in.

Ooh, a new iteration of the 3DS! Surprising! Good thing I waited, I'm much rather have this. I don't care about 3D and a second analog pad sounds awesome.
Ironically, this is supposed to be one of the things to save the 3DS line, but I think this will instead serve to shake consumer confidence and possibly the investors they're trying to bolster.

So it's not surprising, but it may be unfortunate. For Nintendo, at least.

And that's why you shouldn't get the 3DS. Ah, yes. Another future saved through failure.

Do you hear that wind rushing by? Yeah that's the sound of Nintendo being in a state of total free fall right now. The Wii is so stagnant currently that most Wii owners couldn't tell you the last time they turned the damn thing on and the 3DS is doing it's best Virtual Boy impression as of late. Then you have the WiiU which you couldn't pay most people to give a fuck about.

Systems based around gimmicks are systems that will whither on the vine 9 times out of 10. The Wii was the exception to the rule NOT the rule. Nintendo needs to scrap the damn gimmicks and make a good system that can stand on it's own w/o any kind of gimmick if they want to still be around making hardware in another decade.

Personally, I feel the Wii was just a lucky happenstance that bought them a bit of a stay of execution after the decade of failure that was the days of the N64 and Gamecube. However, the Nintendo that is perpetually behind the times is still there and they still are perpetually behind the times. It's amazing, now that the gold plating has come off the turd that was Wii and the 3DS has failed on a worldwide scale, how quickly Nintendo is reverting to the Nintendo of the N64 and Gamecube days. I look forward to playing a Mario title on my next Playstation and/or Xbox. . . .
