Seems a little short sighted of them...you would think they would have learned from the whole wii problem and had plenty in stock...what do they hope to achieve?
What good does it do to keep your consoles in a warehouse when you can launch it sooner by shipping right when the first batch is out of the factory?

Some will get it sooner than others instead of everyone having it later.

You also don't have to pay for warehouses to store them.

why is it that when playstation makes 3D ds follows but no one seems to comment on them copying playstation. but when playstation copies the wii with motion controls they say that they are copying them *even though they technically came out with the eye toy first*. speaking of which is it ironic how this isn't a first time this has happened how they start making mp3 players then they stop then apple comes in then Microsoft soon follows?
Mainly because a) if you had more money than sense, you would be playing 3D PC games last year, b) hardly anyone has a 3D TV yet, c) the 3DS' 3D doesn't require glasses, the PS3's 3D does, d) Sony has a long tradition of copying other companies, most notably Nintendo (analogue sticks, rumble etc.) and e) they probably copied Creative when they released their MP3 player, so there.

Pretty soon Nintendo will release new systems by throwing a single free one into the center of time square, and filming the ensuing blood bath for Japanese television.

I hope they bring it to America. I would definitely watch that.

OT: I will buy this and anyone who gets in my way on launch day will get a cool scar on their face and an interesting story to tell their friends about that trip to pick up a 3DS.

*Plans a brazilian raid on north american waters for the holiday season*
... what? Ever heard how evil it is to preorder and wait hoping your goods didn't fall of the airplane?

It is easy to understand why they would release a limited supply upon launch. You never put the cart before the horse, and I think they want to wait and see if the "limited supply" sells out in under a week to convince the workers to step up the production for the next run. Seeing as how the Wii wasn't quite the first on the scene for next-gen consoles, I don't really blame them for wanting to be cautious about this release. Clearly, people are excited about the new 3DS, but with the DS, DS Lite, XL-DS, and DSi already on the market, aside from the 3D aspect, what is really going to make people shell out another $200+ for yet another version of the DS? If they just retool previous titles to work within a 3D environment, people will sour to this gimmick really quickly, so I can only hope they put serious effort into creating new titles to support the new dimension.
I'll wait it out and see how the system works before even considering one of these toys. There could potentially be disappointments on the horizon, and I'm more willing to let people with more money than they know what to do with to test the waters for me instead.

Last time I checked, the Wii was launched in November, not December...
Sorry, should have clarified - they were talking about the UK release, and the Wii was released in the UK Dec 8th.
Ooohhhh, I see. Thanks!

I think this could backfire.
By could I mean will. I fail to see how rushing out a brand new untested handheld with very few launch titles (Cough VIRTUAL BOY cough)...yeah.
I know you've already said you haven't really done your research but where did "Untested" come from? Was there a basis for that or was it an assumption.

Definitely going to preorder this, two units actually. Even in the unlikely event that I won't like it, I will be able to sell it at cost or maybe even turn a profit.

Very few launch titles [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101377-PilotWings-MGS-StarFox-Headline-3DS-Lineup], now?
I think you've forgotten about a little title called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. Just because those titles have been announced doesn't mean it's going to be out at launch.

Yup, I'm going to pre-order this as soon as they let you. So I can be the super cool kid who has a 3DS before everyone else.

I'm assuming that a console only announced a few months ago is not exactly going to be thoroughly tested for all eventualities and that the games cannot be developed to their full potential.
Especially as this is brand new technology.

Like the Wii and its security issues lol.

I reckon it'll be pretty solid. I'll probably wait a few months to get one; firstly because remakes are cool but not enough and secondly because I live in Australia =\

Ugh, yeah, I remember the Wii launch. There weren't any of them to be found anywhere for weeks! It was madness, stores everywhere with signs saying "NO MORE WII! OUT OF STOCK! DON'T KNOW WHEN WE'LL GET MORE!". Fortunately I had pre-ordered mine at exactly the right place so I actually had it one day before the official release. Dunno if I'll be so lucky again with the 3DS though. I think I'd prefer it if they actually shipped enough units this time so I'll have more than a 1% chance of getting one in the first month..
