According to French Site Gamekyo, Nintendo has sent out development kits for their next handheld system. This could mean that we could see the new system anywhere from 2-5 years depending on development time. Nintendo as of yet has not confirmed this, so it remains speculation.
My thoughts regarding this are going toward the side of this news being inaccurate (in so far as the successor being announced and/or released this year). The DSi launched not too long ago, and the XL is making a Western arrival soon. Plus there's the fact that the next Pokemon titles are coming up soon. All in all, I just do not believe the next handheld is coming quite yet.
