Now I kinda hope that Sony would take a look at this and use it for their own console. Backwards compatablility isn't that big of a thing to me, but if they could make it an optional peripheral at launch that could probably seal the deal for a LOT more people.

Yo dawg! I heard you like playing games. So I put a console in your console so you can... stream videos and music? Oh, you might be able to play games too, I guess.

Ahh, another method of foisting pointless media services upon us under the false pretence of giving gamers "what they want."

Keep it up Microsoft, every one of these rumours has me lean closer to the PS4.

Notice the rumor tag on the headline? As always that indicates that you should be consuming a large quantity of sodium before continuing. You've been warned.
But my dietary requirements do not allow me to imbibe such quantities!

...Anyway, isn't this another recycled rumour from the LAST gen of games? I could swear there was supposed to be such an attachment for either the PS3 or 360.

the device is being designed to compete with the Apple TV
I can believe that. M$ said multiple times that they want to be more like Apple. This is why Sony already won next-gen race. They are not trying to compete with Apple or Mercedes Benz or whatever. They are making a good old gaming console with lots of power. An affordable console that won't have an always online feature, a mandatory Kinect or a subscription based online play. Sony is pulling all the right moves by trying to attract indie developers, girl gamers, hardcore gamers, casual gamers etc. And what is M$ doing? They are still trying to take Apple's piece of the pie.

Soooooooooo what, is the Mini going to look at your gamertag, check for all the games that you've played, and then give you those games for free download?

I heard the Durango will also be able to julienne fries if you buy it's Xbox cooking attachment, too. Rumors are awesome!

I hope so. If this is the case I'm going to borrow all of my friends' game libraries over the next few months. :p Such a system wouldn't work IRL.

OT: Even as a 360 user I'm getting kinda sick of all these 'rumors' about the Nextbox. I'm just gonna ignore any more 720 'news' until the announcement in May because quite frankly all of this speculation is getting ridiculous. At best they stem from some Microsoft employee seeing what will float and what won't and at worst they stem from Internet trolls twisting 360 users' dicks to see how loud we scream.

Yeah, that's pretty much the point that I was getting at. Hell, I could add another 40 games or so to my library with stuff that I've rented.

I'd say that they could just have you pop the game into the actual console and it installs it onto the Mini, but the article said that it downloads it from the net free of charge. Soooooo, yeah...how the hell is it supposed to work if not just giving you every game your gamerscore says you've played?

Something vaguely positive about this thing?

Nah. Smells like bullshit to me.
How is "pay2backwards compatibility" even vaguely positive? It's just less negative than no backwards compatibility. No backwards compatibility is a big no for me and having to pay more for it doesn't help it. Especially not if it's like this article says, a peripheral device with always online DRM. It will be better to buy a 360.

I think this is the way it goes with unconfirmed rumors. There's no way in hell such a system could work and so 'unconfirmed sources' are basically out to spread shite. Like I said, basically trolling on an unreleased system. I'm not going to defend MS here, the fact that they have yet to deny some of the more contentious details of the Durango system lend the rumors weight, but I think I'd rather hear it straight from the horse's mouth.

But on the off-chance: you got any good games I could borrow? :D

Oh, good. More always-online bullshit.

Hey, Microsoft, you know what else I can play 360 games on? My 360. And do you know what doesn't require me to shackle my games to your servers? My 360.

So I'm reading this bullshit article and all I could think was "Christ, since when did gaming become so damned complicated?" I sincerely hope Microsoft sinks for this. I suggest a WiiU this generation. It may get a lot of flak, but its at the beginning of its cycle and deserves and honest chance as I'm sure the games will eventually come. Yea it's looking like PC and maybe a WiiU at some point down the line for me this time around.

I just really want them to release that rumored new version of the 360 that's cheaper and is essentially just made for backwards compability and is stand alone. Then I could finally just finish the frigging fight in Halo 3, maybe play the later entries on the 360, then pack it in and go back to playing on my PS3 and PC (unless, God willing, someone at MS goes nuts and releases the full Halo trilogy on PC like they should have years ago when Halo 3 stopped being a console seller).

Can we stop with the reporting of rumors and just wait until we have 100% from the horses mouth confirmation or just wait until the durn thing comes out?

Unfortunately, it's a sort of "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.
This story would pop up in Gaming Discussion, even if it didn't here.

And even if not here on The Escapist, then every other gaming site would have it covered.

I think that we have moved into the realm of rumors ontop of rumors. The people at Micro$oft are just feeding the flames to get people to talk about the next system they are making. I will start skipping any new stories about this system until they make a REAL statement about the damn thing. This is just getting ridiculous at this point.
