That is heading for Disaster. All Blizzard has to do is plop Diablo 3 on the same day and TOR is in ruins.

I long since burned out my interest in this game. Ive been following it for 4 years now, and I dont even have have a confirmed release date?

...

TOR has been hyped up for so long, a person could have enlisted in, and finished a tour, in the US Navy. Some of us dont have the time to follow a frakking game for that long... and some of us are still IN the Navy... and have blown an entire shore command cycle waiting for some word. Any word.

Hard not to be annoyed/burned out/all outta give a damn.
Right on. I would be burnt out too if I jumped on a game's pre-release forums that early. But I've only followed it since... I dunno, maybe November? I'll probably just avoid it until August or so if this rumor's true. Outside of the buzz on the forums and other related fansites (and obviously any interviews or press releases BioWare does), I haven't seen any overdose of hype. I actually see a decent amount of disdain for the game, though it's often for the wrong reasons.

People seem to be developing the impression that WoW is the only successful MMO, and that unless an MMO actively topples it's a failure.
It's not so much the perception of players that matters as it is the perception of investors. EA have been going out of their way to claim that they're not trying to compete with WoW, but they're not financing the most expensive project they've ever done just to grab a small slice of the MMO playerbase. If TOR ends up stabilising at WAR or AoC numbers it's going to be seen as a failure.

I can't help but think that this game was greenlit several years ago, when MMOs were on the up and before the rush to F2P began. If there is going to be a 6 month delay then they're looking at what they've got just now and deciding it's just not good enough... and that does not inspire confidence.
I just wrote out a huge post and then closed my browser before bloody posting, so I raged a little.

In short:

- EA haven't been going out of their way from what I've seen, they've said once in response to a question about being WoW killers in one video
- If TOR got 500,000 players at $15 a month for a year, then it'd make the rumoured $100 million back (I think that was the rumour, and no, I'm not going to pay attention to a disgruntled artist about it costing $3/400 mill)
- I think it was started in 2007, that's when the rumours started at least.
- Access to the press for the game has been fairly open, and they've very recently shown off a huge portion of the game (6 hours worth of one of the origins) and their Friday update news feeds remain fairly active. You don't really do that if you think it's all gone to shit. If it just went dark (like, say, Alpha Protocol did) very suddenly, then yeah, there be dragons. Likewise, press feedback has been hugely positive.
- Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 are set to come out this year, the delay may be them just trying to maximise sales for each.

Whenever the game comes out, I'll be there for it on release day.

A delayed release could also mean a stronger release and better lasting power, while it might also (for me) mean that I'll feel more capable of playing an MMO regularly.

That said, I'm looking forward to letting my Smuggler (which I might now get a few months extra to decide the gender for) team up with my brother's Trooper and our friends' Jedi Knight and Jedi Consular characters.

wrong, bioware dev replied on the official forums, stating that the release date is still set for spring 2011 and anything else is wrong.

There's also the potential threat of Diabl - no, I can't even finish typing that with a straight face.
at-least your honest haha. Im still disappointed that they made the kotor series into an mmorpg as it is. Its just another example of a game that could stand just fine on its own but they had to make it multiplayer just because they can. also didnt the original star wars mmorpg not do to well. If I remember correctly it was around for a few years but kind of faded out towards the end of its life.
That was Star Wars: Galaxies, made by Sony, and it was really, really boring. Also the tried to cram it into the same timeline as the original trilogy which did wonders for the story. BioWare pretty much made everything for this game, the setting, the lore, etc.

This is exactly how I feel. I was even planning on actually getting a gaming pc before summer for this game. I want it to come out sooner, but at the same time I don't want this game to be rushed.

Heh, made an account to post this, did you? Well, I'm glad you did. It's the single most pertinent piece of information in the entire thread :)

Please, dear god please. Take all the time you can get out of EA!

Unless it uses cannon from the Clone Wars cartoon...then the time should be spent writing out every single instance of that awful show.

I start college in September, and I wanna waste SOME time on this thing...
Trust me, you'll still find plenty of time to waste.

OT: Ive been waiting for this awhile, you can never trust seasons as a release dates... only real dates.

Well, I do believe I'm going to have to bump this post in the hopes that Mr.Funk edits that information into the article.

OT: I do hope this game does well, but more important I hope that I get a new job in time for it's release so I don't have to go bankrupt to play it.

while I am a little meh. about the Star Wars universe I think the longer they give Cataclysm to stabilize the harder a fight it will have. also It better be more than WOW in space. what I mean by that is give us a different format than; go get quest, do quest, turn quest in, rinse and repeat. for the love of god Eve feels like Taxes the video game, but I did appreciate that it tried something different.

The way I see this, if it is true, this just means the game will have more polish. And that is a good thing. Based on what I've seen, this game has promise.

Originally, Warhammer Online got 6 extra months for "polish", only to find that they changed a lot of the game's mechanics and they way they worked....and then they seemed to focus their entire development team on Instanced PvP instead of the RvR that the game was supposed to be about.

As for this game, I think it'll hurt it more than help it. You just KNOW that if you give WoW more than 8 months beyond an expansion release, and they'll get a content patch that will soak in players like a sponge. In fact, right now there's already a map in place for said content just West of Uldum, so they're ready to release that whenever they get to it.

Besides, I'm just afraid that the development team from Mythic might have infected their ideas into Bioware, and that's a bad thing. They changed more and more things in their game's first 6 months to where many of the mechanics that you started with and were used to, were completely different...(for the worse.)
