Rumor: World of Darkness MMOG Stepping Into Light Soon

Gamers may be getting their first look at The World of Darkness MMOG during White Wolf Games' convention next month.

It's been a long time since White Wolf Games made a foray into the world of videogames. The last time this happened was with 2004's <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire:_The_Masquerade_%E2%80%93_Bloodlines#Endings>Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, which was a blast, provided the many bugs didn't ruin your gameplay experience. Since then, gamers have been waiting to revisit the World of Darkness in CCP's upcoming MMOG; from the sound of things, the wait may almost be over.

In an interview with Flames Rising, Shane DeFreest, Community Developer on World of Darkness, had some pretty exciting news for White Wolf fans who would be attending the The Grand Masquerade (White Wolf's annual convention) in September: "The big news that I can't really give to [sic] many details on is that we've got something really big we want to show our fans first. Friday at sundown is where we give everyone the first look at the future of the World of Darkness. If you have been a fan of our games for two months or two decades you won't want to miss what we have to say."

CCP has been playing everything regarding the upcoming World of Darkness MMOG close to the vest for quite some time. At GDC 2009, every time I talked with developers from the company about the project, they got very cagey and were hesitant to answer even the smallest of questions. Presumably the game will be based around the revamped version of <a href=http://www.amazon.com/World-Darkness-White-Wolf-Studio/dp/1588464849/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1280943776&sr=8-1>White Wolf's pen-and-paper RPG universe, though no one's entirely sure about anything more specific than that.

While DeFreest's comments are by no means confirming that the MMOG will be revealed next month, it's not an unreasonable conclusion to go to. The game has a tentative release date for 2011, and The Grand Masquerade seems like the ideal situation to officially give people a first look at the title.

Instead of the dreaded 4th Edition of WoD, could they move it back to the much more interesting(I.E., has lore and character and 'heart') earlier World of Darkness?

Though, any WoD MMO is better than none I suppose.

Hopefully its MMO news, but I'm going to be geeky and say I hope its a new book line they hinted at a year or so ago (sorry, big White Wolf and TRPG fan)

Its probably a bit early for a 4th Edition and yes, the last edition was a lot more interesting then the current one.

I hope it isn't based on their revamped system, that shit was terrible.
They wanted more personalization, and ended up dumbing everything down.
Other than that, sounds good.

Only problem with 3rd edition is the game world isn't really valid past 1999. Tech has advanced exponentially since then and security has steadily increased. 2010 is much more hostile world to would be supernatural.

I hope they offer players the abilities to be hunters. Society of Leopold would be quite prevalent in today's society. Most likely behind tea bagger parties.

I stopped following the WoD about a decade ago but fondly remember it's setting, would be curious to check it out.

though I'd be wary of the twilight craze bleeding through

I'd actually look forward to that. Why, you ask?

PvP.

I can think of few things more satisfying than meeting an Edward Cullen wanna be and blasting them in the face with a shotgun loaded with dragon's breath rounds.

I really hope WoD MMO won't be actually Vampire MMO but will include several other branches of the world, like mages, demon hunters, werewolves, maybe even mummy and changelings.
Im not high on my hopes however, over years of fiddling with MMOs i know that they will never be perfect, and any existing IP is usually hurt badly by them in terms of fluff.
It's about time however for CCP/WW to show off what they got. First news about that game appeared so long ago.

I've been waiting -years- for this game, the chance of getting some actual -real- information about this game soon makes me a very happy camper.

MASSIVE props to whoever sourced that image; the long-haired vampire on the centre-right is a Khaibit, a special bloodline of Mekhet that get Obtenebration (Shadow manipulation). I play one in my university game society's Vampire: the Requiem chronicle.

On a more serious note, as a fan of EVE and CCP, and a huge fan of both Old World of Darkness and New World of Darkness, I am very much looking forward to this. I just hope they do it well - either stick to one supernatural faction initially (Vamps, Weres, or Mages) - or somehow integrate them well enough... it's very hard to tell if this will be good or bad.

And you would do this instead of making a Rahu Blood Talon and pulling him apart bit by bit because...? :p I actually think WoD would be best without Pvp, otherwise the werewolves will just shred everything and have to be... nerfed in melee...

Also, I think this is a huge chance to have an MMORPG that focusses less on combat - give players an objective (steal the werewolf blood from the blood bank was a great one from Bloodlines), give them an instanced area to play in and cut them loose! Have it up to the players if they kill the security guards, sneak past them or talk their way in, with different rewards for each approach.

Also, I just hope CCP remember this is WORLD of Darkness, not New York of Darkness. This is a setting that would benefit from a more global scope...

What's up with all the MMO's coming out suddenly?
This game has been in the beginning stages for years, and without any real hard info I really don't think they're really going to hit any release date of 2011, unless they've just been working hard and been so secretive that nothing has leaked out. So it not like its just suddenly come out, its just been off of everyone but fans of the WoD's radar.

That said I really hope they stick to oWoD rather than nWod. A world without Malkavians is not a world I want to play in.

Who says it couldn't be set in the (not so distant) past? I'm grasping at straws of course because I really liked the old WoD and can't be arsed to care about the new one, but in my mind at least that would work!

Ehhh...I don't know, guys. I just can't see a Toreador grinding muggers for crafting materials.
