Rumor: You Can Tackle Dead Space 3 With a Friend

EA has confirmed we'll be seeing a third Dead Space game.

Today, EA confirmed that Dead Space 3 is in development and is set for a March 2013 launch date. Now that isn't surprising, as Dead Space 2 was a critical and commercial success, and EA really loves at least one of those. What's more surprising is that, if the rumors floating around IGN [http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/09/dead-space-3-allegedly-features-co-op] are true, the game will feature co-op.

According to the IGN report, adding a second player to the mix changes the story. While (yet another) dead body might push notoriously unstable protagonist, Isaac Clarke, into a psychological breakdown if he's on his own, that breakdown won't occur if there's another character there to tell him to pull himself together. Players will also be able to share ammo and healing items, but there's no revive system. If one player gets eaten then it's back to the checkpoint for both of them.

The other rumors are a bit of a mixed bunch. Apparently, the game will step away from the tight corridors of its predecessors in exchange for a snow-blown terrestrial setting. Earlier rumors from Siliconera pegged the planet as Tau Volantis. [http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/26/dead-space-3-takes-place-on-a-frozen-planet-first-details-inside/] Changes have been made to the plasma cutter, meaning I may have to use a different weapon at some point in the game. Isaac can now crouch, and the dreaded "cover" word reared its ugly head. IGN also mentions that the game will introduce heavily armed human adversaries. Oh dear.

EA is expected to share more details about Dead Space 3 and the upcoming Need for Speed game at E3.

Wait so the game is gears of war 3 now? Im afraid snowy foreign planety landscape with alien-reanimated dead people and heavly armored living combatants was taken by Lost planet, or Halo, or Warhammer.... Starcraft? If the roomers are true are they going from different FPS to cliche FPS? Honestly Id play it if they can figure out a way to reconcile the conflicting endings of the first and second games.

Oh that sounds good...I kind of thought Dead Space would work better without the whole horror aspect and it sounds like they're finally doing away with that aspect of the franchise. In all seriousness I actually haven't gotten into this series so no loss here.

Oh dear indeed, the dismemberment gameplay was the unique selling point of Dead Space. Now it sounds like a Gear of War clone.

Popping out of cover to shoot at humans has been done to death. Lets hope that the Necromorphs remain the main threat.

Because nothing says "horror" like having a friend by your side to chat with as you cheerfully dissect your foes.

Seriously, the Dead Space games really need to drop the whole pretence of being scary.

I like the sound of the new environments though.

Co-op sounds interesting and I like the idea of new environments but a cover mechanic? Really? Gonna need to keep an ear out for more info.

It seems as if Dead Space is getting the F.E.A.R. treatment; Sudden co-op, cover system, and all happening on the third installment. Odd.

I guess the game introducing other shooty guys to come after Issac makes a tiny bit of sense. After the events of Dead Space 2 he is on the run from the government, who is after his brain for reasons that to me are lost to time.

And natrually i would expect any kind of cover mechanic to be useless against most things that are of the monstery variety.

Dead Space was scary survival horror (occasionally)
Dead Space 2 wasn't
Now Dead Space will move even further away from horror
Just few examples- is Left for Dead scary? No. Solitude makes games scary, while another player that can cover your back ruins the moment. To make multiplayer game scary you need to opponent that is extremely dangerous and good at sneaking, but this creature will most probably kill them all anyway.
For implementation of this thought check movie Predator2, moment in the refrigerator (or warehouse or whatever that was).
Team of soldiers vs. extremely dangerous enemy
And they still were all killed

DAMMIT. No, seriously, almost word for word my thoughts upon reading the title of this thread.

So we're pulling a RE4-shift, are we?
RE5. RE4 was the escort, RE5 was the co-op.

Rumors. Rumors. And one more time: Rumors.
Also, just look at how Dead Space 2 was in many ways better than the original, even though they left most of the "horror" parts. In case co-op happens, you can still just play it single-player.

I enjoyed Dead Space 1 & 2 a lot...but I absolutely loved Resident Evil 5, so this is good news for me :) Dead Space was good in my opinion, but I think I'd have a lot more incentive to play it if I could do so with a friend. Only if it has a local co-op option though.

I preffered DS2. It kinda knew it wasn't so good on the horror, so it focused on streamlining the action, which was pretty badly needed, so this focus on action with a horror edge sounds like a good logical step to me. And this cover shooting thing? I'm fine with it. It's a bit overdone, but there's nothing wrong with it in principle. Besisdes, who could turn down the offer to shoot a load of totally-not-Scientologists?

So much for the "horror" element Dead Space franchise had. Words can not describe how badly I want to see a good horror game nowadays. I guess there is still some hope with the guys who made "Amnesia". I heard they are making another game, sometime soon...
