I hope you are right, I'll take the wait of next gen and new engine over seeing it rushed in a year or two. Seeing as it is one of my favorite series, the wait will be positively horrible but I rather have an amazing, ground breaking game than more of the same. I'd prefer Fallout was the first game on their new engine since I like it a little bit more than Elder Scrolls.

To those mentioning New York, from fallout wiki -

New York was the location of the United Nations headquarters.

In 2065 a nuclear reactor, struggling to power the population of 17 million people, went supercritical for a period of about 5 minutes. While there was no explosion, the NYC incident coined the term "hot summer" for a heat-related electrical overload on nuclear systems.

Maybe it fried 17 million people and now it's a giant mass grave, do you really want the next Fallout to take place in such a city? :)
It'll make good DLC plus you'll might get the best RAD resist suit while you're at it. Also please avoid the Super and Legendary Glowing Ones.

The setting of the Fallout games have to be embedded in American culture. It would make sense if New York was a setting, but it's already been established that NYC was microwaved into crispy bits.

I vote for Texas for the next game's setting. The Fallout universe hasn't touched that place yet and there are so many monuments like the Alamo and such. Though I would have to murder the shit out of everyone because I really, REALLY hate southern accents.
Actually it never did. What happened was:

In 2065 a nuclear reactor, struggling to power the population of 17 million people, went supercritical for a period of about 5 minutes. While there was no explosion, the NYC incident coined the term "hot summer" for a heat-related electrical overload on nuclear systems.

So no one died, no explosion, no nothing.

So, Skyrim has just been released, meaning there is a new game to come within 1 year +. Me and some friends were talking about the next fallout, and to be brief, we talked about the following.

The new fallout is said to be set in a New York area, which I personally am really looking forward to, because going to the statue of liberty seems so fun and look amazing to play around with.

The engine is said to be Skyrim, which again sounds amazing! I cracked a joke of you coming across random strangers sitting in a house telling you 'I used to be a wanderer like you.... Then I took a bullet to the knee.'

Thats all that I can remember, if any more arises, I will update the thread.

Thoughts and opinions on these?
They've actually stated they wont do New York because That city has been over done to death in gaming so they want somewhere that is more original, They also usually do areas that they are used to so that they can use the knowledge they have of their surroundings to make the best game possible. Ex: Bethesda Softworks HQ is in Maryland which is very close to D.C and the Obsidian Team has worked with the sort of atmosphere that F: NV had

New York would be great. You know why? Because the teaser trailer could have Frank Sinatra's 'New York' playing in it. Imagine: zoom out from a radio, song begins. "Start spreadin' the news...", camera pans out out from the crown of the Statue of Liberty, over the harbour and the ruins of Manhattan, at some point zooms in on a power-armoured figure; "New York, New York...", song fades out, camera fades to black. "War. War never changes." Then the words Fallout 4 show. That would be incredible.
I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it! Not to mention it would be an excuse to put Frank Sinatra's music into a video game(which NEEDS to happen).

I'm going to put this here, because this is along the lines of what I'm hoping for:

LOOK ME IN THE EYES AND TELL ME YOU DON'T WANT TO EXPLORE/LOOT THE SHIT OUT OF THAT!!! I DARE YOU!
As long as more than 60% of that (unlike the usual 40-45% or less in the newer Fallout games) is actually explorable/lootable, I can honestly say that I would be very happy for the next few hundred hours.

why not have it set in China? Seriously, when I was playing Fallout 3 and I wore the Chinese jump suit, all I could think is, if this is what American looks like (waste land) then what does China look like? Because I'm assuming that America bombed it to hell. But then language would be an issue...

I cant see it set outside America, but New York would be nice, although I wonder how they'll implement skyscrapers without making everything an endless mass of stairs and hallways.
most/all the buildings fell down. Problem solved.

Back on topic, WHY would they set it in new york? That place has been DONE TO DEATH. Yes, New York is smelly and you have to keep 10 decoy wallets plus a concealed weapon (and subsequent permit) just to walk around downtown, but we've had SO MANY FRIGGIN' disasters set in New York the thrill of "Yup, sounds like Americas most over rated state got what it had coming!" wore off long ago.

How about setting the game somewhere nobody ever uses? Like Maine? Or Michigan? Hell, how about Seattle? Fallout even has an established setting for Seattle (It's in a permanent nuclear winter, all the buildings are turn-of-the-century-ayn-rand-art-deco style)

We'll see when it comes out, won't we...
I didn't know Skyrim had its own engine! Whatever direction they go with Fallout, I really hope they keep in the humor that they went for with Old World Blues, and take the linearity introduced in Lonesome Road OUT of the game.

If it's set in New York, does that mean we can reenact the end of the original Planet of the Apes?

When you say things like how good the Skyrim engine is, you betray the fact that, with respect, you know nothing about game engines. The Creation engine(Skyrim) is the Gamebryo(Morrowind onward, Fallout and a fuckton of other games) engine with a spit shine and some snow effects, and the cracks are definitely evident. Just look through the forums and see how many threads there are about Skyrim glitches/bugs/lag.

I thought I would be alright with gamings current trend to market their game engines and all the behind the scenes tech talk to the masses...
It is more then a spit shine. Rendering has been rewritten entirely, physics have been improved, and facial animation now uses the physics engine. The engine has changed a lot between games, look at morrowind compared to oblivion, oblivion compared to fallout 3, fallout 3 compared to skyrim. The Creation engine is by no means a "good" engine, but it handles consistent management of props across multiple "dimensions" far better then crytek's engine, or frostbite 2. The lag is more attributed to how the game works (move a sword on the ground, game saves it. Do it a thousand times, and your game is loading too much, hits the RAM cap, and slows down.). I would rather Bethesda stop releasing their games on PS3, rather then remove the freedom and consistency that has come to define their games.

I don't care where it's set, as long as Bethesda learns from New Vegas.
Learns what? Not to lease out their acquired franchise to the franchises original developers, who haven't made a game in a decade and are really, really shit programmers - more so than Bethesda?
To learn never to let obsidian near a computer, but let them do some the writing if they ask nicely.

It is called the Creation engine, bethesda built it from the modified gamebryo engine that morrowind-new vegas used.

I don't understand this line of thought. Fallout 3 was soo much better than New Vegas. I didn't even finish NV. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything special compared to FO3.

I'm hoping it'll be Bethesda's project.
Beyond the lack of WHOA HOLY CRAP COOL stuff in New Vegas as opposed to 3, which was actually intentional, it's difficult for me to think of a way New Vegas isn't better.

1. Far more weapons, more enemy types, more characters, more armor and clothing options, weapon mods---just more in general
2. You take full damage while in VATS now
3. Iron sights
4. Far more quests out of the box than 3 had with all expansions
5. Those quests are much better written and make more sense---no one's preoccupied with robot emancipation, converting cannibals to vampirism or rare kinds of 200-year-old soda when every day is a struggle to survive
6. People are DOING things---in New Vegas there's farms and communities and factions on missions, in 3 everyone who's not a main character is just kind of faffing about
7. New Vegas' main storyline doesn't fall apart with an 11-grade level of scientific understanding
8. New Vegas has a much better companion command system, and every companion has a detailed backstory and accompanying quest related to their history
9. Better-balanced with the different ammo types
10. Super Mutants are a community with character now, instead of being basically orcs
11. Far more branching dialogue options, and more skill checks so your character build affects more facets of gameplay
12. More ways to resolve quests in general---there's 4 factions for which you can complete the main story, all of whom have variations within them
13. Much grayer morality; none of those four factions can really be called "good" or "bad" and there are signs that even their good points could deteriorate
14. Game's smarter in general---just talk to Caesar, and compare that to any dialogue at all from 3
15. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. has been fixed a bit---you will feel the effect of lacking any one of those attributes, whereas in 3 you could easily make a sniper with 1 perception
16. You can't just max everything out and become a demigod now
17. Speech is a VERY useful skill now, used all over the place in loads of dialogues
18. Better perks---most of the ones in 3 were just skill bumps, and even the cooler-sounding ones like Lady-Killer didn't actually have many opportunities for use
19. A better sense of progression in the weapons---in 3 you used Assault rifles and combat shotguns at level 7, and you used combat shotguns and Assault rifles at level 24
20. You can only pick a perk once every other level now, so you don't become overpowered as quickly---and since the perks are better in New Vegas, it's actually a tough choice
21. Hardcore mode, which brings with it the extremely-useful Survival skill
22. Tutorial is short and you can walk away at any point during it
23. Traits are back, adding yet more personalization to each character, and the goofy stuff is in the Wild Wasteland perk so that it doesn't smack you in the face when you're trying to take the game seriously

Off the top of my head.
The obsidian did a great job at making the factions in new vegas morally grey- at least until you realize that the game considers helping one faction to be bad, and another to be good.
The game had no set up or backstory, and little character development.
The same 11th grader who can debunk fallout 3's science is running around freeside with an orbital laser designation gun.
The different ways to complete the main quest didn't matter, there might as well have been zero ways to complete the main quest considering you didn't get to play after it was over.
Fallout 3's super mutants were never orcs, they had a community, dialouge, and an objective. Just because there was only one faction of supermutants, and there goal was to kidnap and make more super mutants doesn't make them any worse then new vegas's super mutants.

I do think that new vegas is a better game, but it is important to note that obsidian built off mechanics that bethesda had to spend time making instead of developing other things. It was nice talki[fallout: new vegas has encountered a problem and needs to close]

freaking sweet, did not expect that, maybe some info about the exploits of the chosen one will be layed out in the game.
