Runescape had its flaws, but it was free, at times quite funny, very light hearted and fun. Sure the graphics were awful, but it played through a browser, so what do you expect?
The real good thing about RS was something that RPGs nowadays have all forgotten: quests.

The quests in runescape were never simply fetch quests; even for the simplest of tasks you were never just given a waypoint and told to go to a certain place, you had to use the map and figure stuff out for yourself -- it gave the game a real sense of adventure, especially in the members' areas where the terrain was so crazy and weird.
The wilderness, though every game pretty much has an equivalent, was great too, as (forgetting the PvP aspect) it was very dangerous but always very mysterious -- it was very hard not to get lost in there, and you would always find things you'd never seen before and never see them again.

Runescape was a great game while it lasted.

I'll give it one thing, it has some of the best quests I've ever seen in an mmo. Honestly I swear two of the quests (Mournings end part 2 and elemental workshop 3) have the most bizarre and hard puzzles I've ever seen.

It was an alright game, but the low number of F2P things as compared to members pushed me away, because I don't like having to spend money when I don't have to. I much prefer DFO, which is superior anyway, and also free.

It's a mediocre Ultima Online.

I have played it as a child, but I quit the moment I played UO.

Been playing it since 2001. Still on the same account.

I play it on and off, play it solid for 6 months, leave it for 12 monthhs, play it for a month, leave it for 4 months, etc.

i enjoy it for its simplicity, although im not level 99 on anything (which is odd considering the time of play i have) - i just get bored and wander around. what i enjoy about it is that you dont get the same level of snobbery on RS than you do on WoW - people dont judge you for your weapons/armour, and there are little in the way of spam-bots like their are in WoW.

Im from the RS1 crowd, bitches.

The unique thing about RS is that theres no uniform or stereotypical structure for their quests, theres no such thing as "Collect 5 hog livers" (the Slayer skill takes that liberty) and just about each area is unique, theres little to no pallete swaps or model reusing. (though Human NPC are garrentied to use the base human model but wears different clothing and has different heads/ect)

Though a gripe i have with it at the moment is that they're barely releasing any content that has a long shelflife and wears out pretty quickly or quests in general has been a few puzzles here and there, perhaps a fight or 2 and then it's finished or if they're really griefing maybe just a quest where most of the time you are running.

Honestly though, a few good tweaks could do good justice with minimal QA time.

- Adding more costumes to the Costume Room
- Introducing benefits to owners of high leveled Player owned Houses
- Add all the new Haircuts, Clothing styles, Shoes and Colours to the Bedroom, the game has added 2-3+ batches of new clothes since Construction's release.
- Heck, perhaps Construction in general needs a massive rehaul.
- Perhaps tune up old, delapidated minigames that are seldom used anymore such as Tai Bwo Wannai and Shades of Mort'on with rewards and incentives for investing time. :D

Gotta love Runescape... it's like the old, manky family pet that nobody wants to get rid of. I mean that in the best way possible. It just turned 10 years old, which is very impressive.

I play it quite a lot nowadays, and have been playing it on and off for... 5 years. I love it for its deep and interesting quests (with actually more gameplay than simply "go there, kill X"), not to mention it has its charm as a game which you can simply pick up for 5 minutes then leave again. It's perfect for casual players who don't want a hardcore game. The sheer variety of non-combat things to do compared to other MMOs is great, too.

That said, it is a grindfest. Which is why I shy away from skilling too much. The minigames, the quests, my friends and random stuff are more than worth the measly 5 bucks a month.

I played it for an hour, then quit.
I didn't play enough to get a good look, but I guess there was some appeal to it.
Judging by how obsessed with it my friend in 7th grade were, I might try it again if I'm that bored, but I now have MGS2, so fat chance of that.

I liked Runescape before I found out what the internets was, and before I played any other game ever.
Runescape makes the most grindy grind in WoW or any other MMO, seem like childs play.
I would rather scan every single planet in ME1, get every heart and Skulltula in OoT, max out every profession in WoW, and get every challenge in Borderlands, than play Runescape again.

At least by doing any of the grinds above, I would get a sense of accomplishment at the end.
Runescape can be summed up as this:

It's fun, but after a while you get bored of it. Combat could be restyled, grind is fucking massive and the free-to-play community is like walking through a ghetto, you don't want to talk to people because you think they may hack your account. In contrast, Members tend to be so fucking higher leveled then you so you don't want to bother them. So the sense of community could be worked on, but my biggest complaint about the game was item loss upon death, the best armor takes 1-2 months of grinding for money to earn it and you don't want to use it on the off chance you'll die. My own paranoia stopped me from doing a majority of the quests.

I still play Runescape regularily and got a membership for the last three summers cause 3 months is only $20. I find it's still a fun way to kill time and at this point I've put to much time in it just to throw it away. Dungeoneering is pretty sweet once you get some friends together.

it was a shit time waster after they took out the wilderness and free trading. there are far better time sinks. and jesus fucking christ getting from 69 def to 70 takes years. i gave up when they took out the wilderness because i ran out of interesting stuff to do.

oh and there security is shite. i got hacked about 5 times.....

Theres nothing to fear in FTP really, no one can hack you unless you was reckless with your account info, though id probally be weary of scammers asking for items and offering common items in return like Leather Boots.

The members community is a bit more tolerant (atleast from what ive seen atleast) though they seem to be spread a bit too thinly, theres definately less people in varrock than there is in FTP worlds, though the Grand Exchange is usually a massive hideout.

To be honest though, making cash is quite easy these days as theres demand for commodoties such as herbs and ores, realistically though most of the good armor these days are hard to lose with the keep 3 items limit since theres only a few items themselves that would protect over some items that has a higher player value. a notable case is the Bandos Breastplate which currently costs 18.10 Million coins to players allthough the Ancient Stauette (a rare drop from players in PvP/Bounty Hunter worlds) would protect over it despite having a high alchemy cost of 3m gp.

Forgot to menction that theres buyable gravestones that lengthens how long your items would remain safe for, with the best ones lasting 6 mins (mems only) otherwise you're limited to the basic graves, a friend could probally tag along and repair/bless your grave to make it last alot longer i guess, though some areas don't enable gravestones so be weary.

I went there to conduct sociological experiments, if you could call it that. I gained a temporary following by playing the character of a bald adorably naive friendly Engrish speaker dressed in the most gay outfit RuneScape could offer. On my other main account I liked to make up absurd stories to see people's reactions and to exercise my wit. I also temporarily befriended people on my other account who found my antics amusing, but most of the people there were boring and/or under the age of 13. It was pretty hilarious when they were like "yer well lets take this to wildy" or something when they got tired of being followed by some freak spouting philosophical mumbo jumbo and questioning the basis of their ego. "Repeatedly right clicking pixelated trees. This is the life!" Yeah, good times.

Okay, so I did get my main account up to level 23. So satisfying seeing that guard/goblin's health bar turn half red with one swift kick while some noob says ":O weres ur wep?" _>

Runescape was fun in Grade 7 and 8, but I got WoW after that and never looked back.

I was a member for a while. I'll give it this much: It has some great quests that make full use of its limitations. Instead of simple gathering or fetch quests, you're investigating a haunted house, or journeying across the land for mystical armour to eventually slay a dragon. The wilderness was also fun, and I believe Runescape had the best cooking system I have yet to see in a game. Want to make a pie? Make dough, fill the pie pan with the dough, put in the filling, then put the pie top on. Then cook it. And it might burn if your cooking isn't high enough.

Fun days, but I don't think I'll ever go back. It's a great MMO for kids and people curious about MMOs, but once you've played some big budget games, it's tough going back.

I play Runescape. I personally don't like when people don't give it a chance and just instantly say its bad. Some arguments against it are true but if you can get past those it is in many ways superior to WoW.
