Yup. [https://techraptor.net/content/russian-defense-minister-claims-metal-gear-series-is-used-by-us-to-manipulate-youth]

Well, it really depends on what type of manipulation they?re referring to. Certainly can?t be the type that would lead to a revolution, since people would need to, well, understand the source material first.

And that hasn?t happened yet.

I mean, wow, the US must be at absolute wit's end if they have to rely on Kojima to make their propaganda for them.

Sad thing tho, a lot of people will believe this guy nonetheless.

What's hard to understand about Metal Gear? The story is a mess of Kojima randomly picking up and dropping plotthreads when he's bored of then but the game's are about as subtle about their themes as a kick in the balls.

The article make him sound more important than he really is. Russia has like 10 deputy DoD ministers and this is just the usual superstitious nonsense. It's probably Skull Face's origin in MGS5 that set some bad blood by him being a Soviet assassin who killed Stalin then defected to the west. Also Venom aiding the Mujahideen and the peculiarities of spetznaz commanders(burn the village, not the people) in MGS5's Afhanistan map or Skull Face's support of the anti-Soviet/pro-Mobutu Unita rebels in the Congo/Zaire map probably also didn't do much good. I have to give Kojima credit he seems pretty well read when it comes to post-WW2 international relations. And Russia is very sensitive with their history and see a conspiracy even in fiction that brings it into question. Instead of Skull Face being, you know, just a product of the imagination of an aging Japanese hipster.

What's even ironic is that these fools and assholes would be manipulated by people like Big Boss, The Patriots, Ocelot, or Liquid Snake in the MGS universe.

Must be a sad and pathetic way of life to see a conspiracy in "everything". All it does it shows how insecure and ignorant a person is.

Ah yes, Metal Gear. That series that's anti-nukes, anti-war, and has the US run by a shadowy cabal that propogates both.

Not exactly the most effective pro-US propaganda, mister minister.

Well, it's more part of a wider effort to prove 'bias' against Russia in an attempt to undermine any official accusations like their confiscation of Crimea or their recent provocations in the kerch strait to block Ukrainian access to the black sea. Throw as many smoke screens as possible to obfuscate policy intentions. With any criticism(even fictitious ones) they try to sway public opinion into their favor. This particular example is laughable ofcourse but in general it's a tactic that works though, just look at how susceptible people are for the huge disinformation campaigns on social media.

But in fairness, I think calling the above games "American propaganda" is a reasonable claim, if not entirely accurate (bar America's Army).

Kojima was a CIA agent all along. Makes sense, since he's such a giant westaboo.

America's Army sure. But you could replace other two with any Michael Bay movie or [Put Tom Clancy's IP here].

Yeah, someone saying something foolish doesn't make them a fool. I personally can't say why they said what they did, but to dismiss it as just stupidity because it's not true is a bit of a jump.

A fun fact is that the Transformers movies are endorsed by the American army, so you aren't that off the mark.

If you separate the convoluted melodrama from the more historic context in which these games take place they have a more, and often quite in-depth, critical approach to actual policy decisions than say the ''Murrica fuck yeah'' of a game like CoD. MGS has the potential to make people think(or atleast, interested enough to research it's real world inspirations) which is probably more threatening to them than just mindless patriotic nonsense. Still though, that Kojima's games get not only noticed but also mentioned in the highest levels of Russian government is quite an accomplishment itself. xD
