Err...how can you say the game wasn't involved in this? Obviously the drinking played a bigger role, but the kid was extremely upset in losing to this other guy countless number of times. The game provoked him, and the drinking enabled him. I just think that the game is partially to blame. Its also the cafe's fault for letting fights break out and then letting them continue playing.
Yeah but I'd say that's more competition and a sore loser.
This story would probably end up the same if they got hammered and played tiddlywinks for hours.
Obviously one couldnt take losing, got too wasted to know what he was doing and took things too far.

Well, I would say that I don't get homicidal when drinking and getting my ass handed to me in Rock Band/Guitar Hero, and that it's because it's a game about killing people that the guy was killed over it, but that's not exactly fair. I think that war games tend to attract the homicidal alcoholics who can't just brush off losing (moreso than Rock Band, anyway), and I blame this fact.

A kid that young should not have been drinking and why the hell would anyone, regardless of age, kill someone else over a game, I understand punching someone in the face (I did it once over a game of Mario cart Double Dash, and I was sober but that bastard just kept getting the 3 red shells!!11!!!1!!!!1!)

well, if this happened in America everyone would be blaming the school system or the economy or the government

So I will do the same, its because of the Russian government and their school system and their economy

...let the hate responses roll in...

they let a 14 year old drink, I mean yeah maybe an ecception for the 17 year old but 14... too soon

This is why online games should be viewed as JUST A GAME, not a lifestyle or anything SERIOUS..

I wish I could say I am surprised but having gone to lancenters and played CS this kind of behavior isn't that uncommon. One guy flipped a ***** because someone one shot him with the magnum sniper rifle and went up and down the aisles till he found the guy who did it. They didn't even throw him out for starting the fight and this is here in the States yet I almost got thrown out for calling someone a name for TKing on purpose. Le Sigh.

So if they had been playing boggle before one slew the other? I'd be boggles fault? Maybe just don't serve alcohol to 14 year olds and this might be avoided.

Here's the moral of the story

Games don't kill people, idiotic evil people kill people

I never said it was the games violent tone that drove the boy to kill. I just said that the game played a role in the other kid's death. Of course if they'd been playing boggle or trouble or candyland the other kid might have wound up dead still. Thats not the point though, it was the competitive edge of the game that provoked the kid, and the drinking and cafe that enabled him. I'm not completely blaming the game, please read my post. =/

The media likes to focus exclusively on one reason for violent acts.
This trend tries to oversimplify complex issues and problems.
It's interesting that alcohol isn't mentioned in the title.

Was there suspected mental instability, or did just the fact he was a youth
and drunk reduce his sentence to 4 years?
(I couldn't find anything pointing to that conclusion after reading the article.)

Also, why was the 14 year old teenager allowed to drink alcohol in public at all?

You think there a drinking age in Russia? If you can see over the bar you can drink. Which as we can see will have some dangerous results. I just wish his sentence was higher, I mean he did stomp a man to death.

Wow. That's pretty fucked up. But, as usual, just because some idiot kid is a sore loser, was drunk off his ass, got angry and beat someone to death doesn't mean that videogames are evil or the cause at all. This kid had issues.

I'm sure Jack Thompson is just going to love this, not that he can do anything about videogames anymore, *Laughs Maniacally*. Also, while the game can be blamed somewhat for this, it mostly because of alcohol, competition, having bad judgement, and just being stupid.

Yeah, I haven't slept all night and now it's 12:08 PM...it made sense to me 5 mins ago.

Anyways if those two were fighting why didn't they take the alcohol away or kick them out?

Yeah, I agree the sentence should have been more, considering he stomped that guy to death.
