Hello and welcome to another episode of RWBY where the melodrama flows.
We start with Ironwood questioning Yang and the team about Yang's actions during the tournament. Ironwood basically states that Yang must have been stressed and pumped with adrenaline and attacked a phantom. In addition, as a result of the attack, Yang and team RWBY are disqualified. While Ruby and Weiss believe Yang but Blake is less certain. Blake argues that she saw a friend change and become warped as time went on. Blake knows that Yang is not like that and eventually trusts her. This bit of melodrama doesn't work for me because of how abrupt it both starts and ends as it tries to create tension out of nowhere and resolves it so quickly that the resolution hits like a puff of wind.
We have a few moments of JNPR sharing condolences with RWBY and then we have a tonal shift as Nora tries to prepare Pyrrha for the big fight. The music shifts to rock and Nora start doing rapid shifts in position all in a comedic voice. This tonal shift is so sharp that I got pulled out of the proceedings and had what little investment in Yang's suffering invalidated. We are followed with more comedy revolving around Ren making a herbal mix and Nora drinking then vomiting it.
We transition to Qrow talking to Yang about the event and Yang telling Qrow about Raven. Qrow explains that Raven does visit Qrow at times and decides to leave a message to Yang: That Raven saved Yang once but Yang shouldn't expect it again. Qrow then says that Raven let some info slip about how to find her and decides to bring Yang to her.
Meanwhile, Jaune has a heart to heart with Pyrrha about how Pyrrha believes in him and Jaune wants to talk to Pyrrha about what's troubling her. Pyrrha starts talking about destiny and how she thinks that she is meant to become a huntress and save the world but indirectly worries about the maiden's power taking her identity away. Jaune tries to comfort Pyrrha and causes Pyrrha to get emotional and trigger her semblance involuntary.
Ruby then talks to Velvet and learns that Coco had an illusion cast on her similar to with Yang. Ruby then walks into the stadium and sees Emerald and walks into a hallway where she sees Mercury up and walking. At the same time, the randomization puts Penny vs Pyrrha and Mercury predicts bad results as the episodes ends.
There are a few things that I dislike about this episode. The first was people thinking that Yang had a stress hallucination. Did no one think that someone could produce illusions with a semblance or do people forget about one of the major abilities of hunters. In addition, did they establish that semblances are tied to emotion because that feels like an asspull to generate trauma. Finally, the melodrama that they tried to do with Yang was generated and resolved far too quickly while Pyrrha's melodrama feels off partially due to her conflict with getting the Maiden's power not being developed before the talk with Jaune.
In the end, like the poor omen I have for Penny, I have ill feelings for how the show will progress.
Edit: I just realized. Why was Mercury there? He was told to lay low. why would he show up at a stadium full of people who think he is injured.
