Hello and welcome to another RWBY episode where things may actually be picking up plot wise.

First off, we learn why Pyrrha was called to Ozpin's office. Ozpin tells a tale of four maidens named after the seasons who receive great power for their good deeds. It turns out that Pyrrha is chosen to receive the power of the maiden of the fall. However there are complications. Normally, a maiden's power is passed on to the person on her mind when she dies but the current maiden of the fall had a portion of her power stolen and her life is in danger. Ozpin and the society that he is a part of can't risk having the remainder of the fall maiden's power transfer to the attacker so they decided to do something risky. Ironwood has created a device to transfer the aura of the fall maiden into Pyrrha but with possible consequences to her sense of self. As such, Ozpin gives Pyrrha a choice to decide before the end of the tournament.

I have some issues with this setup. The main reason is that the myth of the maidens was never alluded to or mentioned before. If it had been mentioned before, the reveal of the myth being real would seem like a natural extension of the world's history and myth. Without the world building though, this seems like a random insertion to add tension and drama to the proceedings. Another minor issue is the camera which pulls back twice in two spots to try to do establishing shots of the interior but the times when they did it didn't develop the sense of scale that was intended and merely muffles the dialogue being spoken.

We then transition to a fight between Yang and Mercury. The fight itself was decent enough; the choreography was average with appropriate slowdown for tense moment and contact between the punches and kicks. The camera however is a bit deficient as, instead of doing traditional Chinese martial art film methods and having the camera focus on each hit or exchange of blows, the camera is pulled back too much and diminishes the impact conveyed.

After the fight, there is more story as Mercury, out of aura, tries to fly kick Yang and gets his leg broken as a result. However, Cinder probably had altered the camera to make it seem that Yang had attacked Mercury without provocation. The reactions of the crowd seems to attract the attention of Grimm outside the city and they seem to be ready to attack.

All and all, the episode reaches acceptable and manages to get halfway towards good as the story setup is intriguing but flawed and the fight is acceptable and has room to improve

Haven't watched the episode yet, but I'm just going to comment on the writing.

Agree with you on the lack of foreshadowing. If they had just had this reveal earlier I would be watching RWBY with much more gusto than I do now. Also, this reveal retroactively explains a lot, but not everything. The flaws of Volumes 1 and 2 still remain, some lore still isn't explained properly in-show, episode 2 and most of 5 are filler, and the academy setup right now seems largely extraneous in comparison.

Also, the claim of Remnant having no magic is *clearly* bullshit now. There may also be a plot hole with Penny if her Aura was taken from somebody else and not artificially generated like she claimed.

Still, this season was better set up than previous ones, with the tournament segments actually providing lots of foreshadowing towards that pivotal moment (my theory is that Emerald used her illusion Semblance on Yang just as she did on Coco, causing her to hallucinate that Mercury attacked her), and the Grimm properly coming into play. The reveal, if the production truly run with it, may give the show the focus it lacks. Now there are truly stakes to pay attention to, not to mention the speculation can actually go interesting directions (CFVY joining RWBY in their investigation due to shared experiences, who are candidates to be maidens, who *were* maidens--this is where names like Summer and Winter become important, what might happen to certain characters, who might die, etc).

Ok I admit to say it now, there is a plot to the show now other than high school life hijinx?

Also did anyone else had the video (RT site) skipped like 10 second during the part when Goodwitch explain how the Maiden power passed on? I reloaded the page twice and it was the same result.

I agreed that someone is using illusion on Yang just like Coco in the past episodes. First I thought it was Emerald but now maybe it's Cinder since we didn't saw Emerald in today episode but Cinder walking away before the match begin.

No, I think it's Emerald. She got down from the stands to Mercury waaay too fast for somebody who should be supposedly shocked in the eyes of others.

On the fight animation, now that I've watched the episode proper, even though it has Monty's fingerprints all over it and the choreography is good, there are still significant flaws. Yang's beginning punch looks especially awkward, lacking momentum and variable speed, and the overall animation looks choppy and unnatural in some cuts, though maybe it's just my eyes. Also, Ironwood has this weird shaking going on with his legs in one scene and the walking animations to the chamber look off. Still, I was much more engaged with the maidens despite all the exposition going on.

Geez, Miles and Kerry have to pick *now* to be good writers. Love the ambiguity of whether Mercury was genuinely surprised by Yang or threw the fight on purpose, with signs pointing to both.

E: It's been brought up somewhere that Emerald's Semblance may be to create mirages, not to induce hallucinations, which might also be a satisfactory explanation. However this does invite other logistical questions, like if the audience saw her using her Semblance on Coco, and whether it could actually conceal a person's actions; we've only seen it used in a context where the projection was far away from the subject, not in the same area obscuring it.

E2: This should explain things better, and Coco's sunglasses also become important. http://elusiveemerald.tumblr.com/post/135060686547/okay-im-breathing-im-breathing-im-good-now

Well I just caught up to the current episode.
After last episode, I'd have to say that this one was better by a large margin.
I only wish they had extended the fight a little bit.

Judging the first part, I do feel that the fairy tale was pulled from nowhere. Yes, I'm happy that the world has its own fairy tales, but it still came from nowhere. You'd think they would introduce something like that in season one, and drop little hints about the maidens. Apart from that, I like the addition, and I'd only wish they aged the plot point a little bit, heck, it could have made season one a little better.

With the fight, I actually liked it, as mentioned before, I would have preferred it was a little longer. My problem with it is the whole broken leg part, for it was a little ambiguous about how it happened. Was Yang under an illusion spell or was the whole arena? If I'd place a bet on anything, Cinder has partial maiden power and cast a spell on Yang. Don't know why, but it rubs me the wrong way.

EDIT: Looking at the above post, it could be Emerald's special.
If it is, that's pretty neat.

Other than that, if they continue with this quality, I might somewhat enjoy the rest of the season.
But I doubt that, because my mind keeps nagging me about how many of the characters are underdeveloped or ignored.
Like you'd think Joan would be added a little more, because how important he is to Pyrrha... well, by now I feel he SHOULD be important rather than a unknown dolt.

Also, Blake is pretty much non-existent to a laughable extent.
You'd think that there would be something to do with Adam or that.

Poor Blake, reduced to a shadow and a fish joke. >_>
