The retreat was quick, though the effects of it were lasting. It was easy to see why Xuan Ba had recalled his army, for they could hardly take a single step without encountering the corpse of a soldier. The majority of the losses were Faunus thanks to the human's walls and dust.

The students could hear illusionary soldiers talking about the retreat. "Xuan Ba calling for a retreat... these humans have grown strong." a younger parrot faunus with a bandage over his left arm said, his hatred for humans obvious in the way the word rolled off his tongue. His sentiment - hatred mixed with concern - seemed the prevailing one among the troops throughout the retreat and thereafter. A few older faunus commented on how Xuan Ba did not underestimate his enemies and knew when to change tactics, but these largely fell on deaf ears.

In fact, the damage the party - and several other groups - had done to the wall seemed to be one of the only things keeping morale together. The other of course was the incredible power of Xuan Ba himself. As such, Team MJSC and Team JADE were welcomed into the camp as minor heroes for their role in cracking Lodestar open.

The army retreated to a nearby hillock that no longer existed outside the illusion. Any student could see why this was the case as it overlooked Lodestar well enough to create a tactical advantage to any attacking army. No doubt, once modern dust technology became real, Lodestar had seen to the destruction of the hill and the danger it represented. For now however, it sufficed as a relatively safe resting place for the army.

As the camp was constructed - a simple affair of bedrolls, campfires, and the occasional tent for the generals to discuss plans - the army set about making and eating their dinners. The task was largely left to each individual to perform, though several small groups seemed to have delegated tasks out instead.

The camp was built in a hurry and it's defenses put in place and tested. The Faunus weren't too worried about a human assault - the demi-faunus monsters didn't even have nightvision! - but there were still threats. In particular, the rampant killing of the day would no doubt have attracted the Grimm.

For his part, Xuan Ba seemed to spend most of the time while the camp was constructed watching Lodestar, an odd look on his face. He noted the slowly repairing walls with an almost nervous edge, though why no one could say. The damage that had been done to the walls was more than significant and could not be repaired in a week, much less a night.

Empathy DC 3 to "read" Xuan Ba. Feel free to approach anyone in the camp - including Xuan Ba - thanks to your efforts in bringing down the wall.

As night fell, Claire took a minute to appreciate the evening sky. Camping out in the wilderness, away from the relative safety of the Kingdoms and their cities, was an experience few could ever experience. Before coming to Lodestar, the young woman had only spent a handful of nights outside of Vacuo, and even then she'd been close enough that the city's brightness had drowned out at least part of the sky.

But here in Professor Van Wink's illusion, tossed into the distant past before the advent of fluorescent lights and streetlamps, the view was unparalleled. Countless stars and planets, sprawled out across thousands upon thousands of lightyears, hovered above her, with all but the most distant appearing clear and crisp. Astronomy may not have been her strong point, but Claire suspected that Van Wink may have recreated a historically accurate version of the sky, with the positions of major constellations slightly shifted to account for the centuries of celestial drift. Of course, the Lodestar was still in its customary position, its brilliant gleam acting as a guide for anyone trying to navigate the wastes.

Had she been more poetically inclined, Claire might've tried to strike a metaphor between the star's perseverance and that of the school that had taken its name. As it was, however, she was more than content to simply admire it for a few minutes.

After she'd had her fill of stargazing, the young Huntress stood back up, stretching to work the kinks out of her muscles. Sure, the sky was pretty, but this was still supposed to be a lesson about history, not astronomy. There were other things that needed her attention.

It didn't take long to get a lean-to setup, and someone in the Faunus army had gone around passing out blankets and bedrolls, as well as some other battlefield supplies. Leaving her spear and heavier bits of armor by her campsite, Claire wandered around the rest of the camp, waving at the rest of teams MSJC and JADE when she spotted them. However, she didn't stop to chat until she spotted Schwarz. He was easy enough to recognize, being one of the few members of the army still wearing a helmet.

"Hey, Mr. Zaan. Heard you got kind of roughed up earlier. Need any patching up?" Claire held up a roll of bandages and a jar of poultice she'd picked up earlier. It was a far cry from the healing powers of Dust and modern medicine, but even simple herbs and bandages could help enhance the healing abilities of one's Aura.

The battle had been an exhilarating experience. It had been strange fighting against living people rather than the monsters of Grimm but the intoxicating thrill of battle had swept away any misgivings Elva had. Fighting alongside her teammates again, she was growing accustomed to their styles and felt their strength as a unit was growing by the hour.

What she hadn't enjoyed about the fight was her idiotic brother almost blowing them all up with his recklessness. The big lout needed some punishment for that she thought as she crept up behind where he was seated, a bucket of water she'd managed to steal held in her hands. Unfortunately just before she could reach him her foot snagged on a tent rope, sending her reeling off balance and pulling the tent down on the unfortunate occupants inside. She futilely attempted to keep her feet before falling flat on her ass in front of her teammates, the bucket of water ending up on her head with its freezing contents drenching her from head to toe.

In the stunned silence that followed she angrily ripped off the bucket and threw it at Matt, before storming off dripping through the camp. Snatching a random tunic off a hastily constructed clothesline she attempted to dry herself off before throwing it aside and marching to the edge of the camp. There her pace slowed as she came upon the imposing figure of Xuan Ba gazing upon the distance sight of Lodestar. He appeared frustrated, even if his posture was reserved. He clearly wasn't expecting this newfangled 'Dust' thing to be such an effective defensive tool. She hovered there uncertain whether to approach him or not, the man was an intimidating presence and she felt very vulnerable all of a sudden without her teammates to back her up.

Hero worship was never something Diamond looked for, at least not anymore. Doing her absolute best to avoid the army happiness over her section of the battle, she removed her patta from her arms and slung them across her back, leaving for the edges of the camp where there were fewer people to recognize her.

Setting herself up under a handful of boulders creating a blind of sorts, she looked out at what would later become Lodestar, as indomitable as it was in the present, perhaps less so in all honesty, the walls were much more massive in the past at least.

Leaning back, she intended to breathe for a moment before keeping watch over the camp. At least this way she could say she was doing something useful besides being fawned over for simply doing her job.

And then sleep came...

(( Amber ))

By the time they got back to camp, the adrenaline rush of combat, and just barely escaping the worst of an explosion, had worn off and left Amber exhausted. And she wasn't the only one. The retreat, along with all of the Faunus casualties had left pretty much the entire army listless and demoralized. She couldn't blame them. The fact that Teams MJSC and JADE were the only ones to really do any damage to the wall almost felt like insult onto injury to her.

As she walked through the ramshackle camp, she took a glance over at Xuan Ba himself as he looked over at the Lodestar encampment, particularly the damaged wall. His expression was inscrutable, but she could tell that he wasn't happy. Given the result of the earlier assault, she wasn't surprised.

When Amber spotted Jin, however, her face twisted into a scowl as she started to make her way over, her stride purposeful. She pulled back a fist when she got there, and gave the Faunus Girl a good slug on the shoulder.

"That was for nearly blowing up Jade, Claire, Di, and me earlier! It doesn't help anything if you try to get the bad guys, but hurt your buddies in the process!" she growled, her bangs hiding her glare.

After a moment, she shook her head and stalked off. At the back of her mind though, she wondered just how long this illusion was going to last. If it wasn't over yet... Something had to be coming. There was always the chance that Lodestar might do a surprise attack as retaliation, but considering what was out there? There was always the Grimm.

Matt jogged his way back to the camp, avoiding the last salvo from Lodestar's defenders as he ran. The last beats of the day's battle hadn't gone well for Xuan Ba's forces, its remnants limping back onto the high ground. It was humbling, really - just a few minutes ago, his army had seemed unstoppable, yet now...

It just went to show how much of a game-changer Dust was. Even then, Matt doubted they fully understood just how important it would end up becoming - not just as a weapon, but as a fuel, a building material, and so much more. The Kingdoms lived and died on their ability to supply themselves with Dust.

Matt sucked in a breath as he finally arrived in the camp, among the last of the stragglers. He wasn't truly tired, of course - few things tired him since his Semblance had first manifested - but he needed something to try and steady his still shaken nerves. That battle was... something. Lots of things. Few of them good.

But above all else, it seemed so... pointless. Xuan Ba and Vacuo had fielded impressive armies and weapons, but their first instinct was to turn them on one another? There were monsters in those sands - a veritable horde of them, even - and humankind's first instinct when given a weapon capable of driving them back was to strike out at one another?

Matt shook off those heavy thoughts, trying to center himself. Now wasn't the time for second-guessing. He was team MJSC's leader, however unfit for the position he thought himself to be, and leaders need to be a pillar in trying times. With that in mind, he took off to find the rest of his team - they would have certainly made it back to the camp before him.

It wasn't long before he found them, arguing. Again. Matt sighed to himself. That he'd have to take a role of peacekeeper wasn't entirely unexpected - Schwarz was a Zaan, after all, and two of his teammates were Faunus - but that didn't make the task any less daunting. He could barely keep his own emotions in check, and the prospect of having to manage those of others was a rather unpleasant one.

"I have reservations against wanton slaughter of my own kind, regardless of some instructor's intent." Matt winced despite himself. He could understand that, for sure - as far as he was concerned, Hunters were supposed to fight Grimm, not other people. Schwarz probably didn't mean it exactly like that - his definition of his 'own kind' was likely a great deal narrower than his own, for sure - but the spirit of the idea was the same. Hunters shouldn't fight their own.

"Yeah, I can understand that." He cast a glance out over the battlefield as the sun begins to slip down over the horizon, several of the craters still smoldering even now. ""Hunters are supposed to be protectors, not soldiers."

A loud crash jerks him from his thoughts, and he wheels around to see... Elva? Soaked to the bone, with a bucket over her head. From the looks of it, she had been trying to sneak up on him, before tripping on the support to a nearby tent. Before he could say anything, she forced herself to her feet, tearing off the bucket and tossing it at him. It bounced off his chest, and Matt stood back slightly agog. Had... had he done something to upset her? He stopped and wracked his brain for a moment, watching as she stormed off, trying to wring some water out of her... singed...

Oh. Ohhhh.

A cold mote of dread worked its way into his gut. How could he have been so reckless!? He'd gone along with Jin's plan because he was too much of a coward to wade into the thick of the fight himself, and... and that had put Elva at risk!

He rushed off, knocking over a few illusory soldiers as he ran. More than a few apologies were in order.

After the retreat, Jin stood along the edge of the encampment. She was staring at the breach that she and Matt had made in Lodestar's walls. Jin was skeptical about Xuan Ba's decision to retreat, given the amount of damage the Dust explosion was able to cause. She figured it would have been better to seize advantage of the explosion's shock factor and take out the Dust artillery as quickly as possible, regardless of causalities.

However, Jin realized Xuan Ba didn't have the same knowledge that she did - that the Grimm would overwhelm those outside Lodestar before the siege could go on much longer. "If he did though...perhaps he would press for a night attack." Jin thought. Perhaps that was what Professor van Wink was expecting of them, to use the knowledge they had of history to help influence the Siege of Lodestar.

Jin's thoughts were interrupted when something hard pummeled her into the shoulder. The pain made her growl and she whipped herself around, curling her fists as she entered a combat stance. She dropped the stance though as she realized the attacker was Amber.

"That was for nearly blowing up Jade, Claire, Di, and me earlier! It doesn't help anything if you try to get the bad guys, but hurt your buddies in the process!"

Jin followed after her. "Forgive me. I had hoped the smoldering of the walls would sufficiently alert our fellow teammates of its detonation. However, it seems I also overestimated the potency of my own Dust channeling and Matt's aura, as I was caught in the explosion as well." she said. After a moment, she spoke again. "You would do best to prepare yourself. Assuming Professor van Wink is not attempting revisionist history, the Grimm will likely be attacking us soon. We would do best to alert our fellow teammates."

As the night went on, it grew darker and colder though far from quiet. Distant howls of what everyone hoped were wolves rang through the camp, turning the frustrations of the army to unspoken fear. The battle-hardened army was at least smart enough to limit the fear through any and every method available, but some negativity inevitably leaked out. A few lone Grimm - mostly simple Beowolves, Creeps, and young Bloodmanes - made probing attacks against the camp but were turned back or slaughtered by the sentries.

However, in the still-dark hours of the early morning, things began to change. The howls became more frequent. The darkness seemed to grow; appearing so thick as to be solid and the night became cold as ice. This all came to a head when the loud calls of horns blasted through the camp, forcing all but the heaviest of sleepers into sudden uncomfortable wakefulness.

As people crawled from their tents or bedrolls, they were faced with... nothing. The camp was alive with activity and soldiers were arming themselves, though there were no Grimm or Humans in sight. A relatively large group was gathering by the cliff side where Xuan Ba still sat; watching.

After grabbing her equipment, Jade went to join them and finally saw the reason for the alarm. From their position above Lodestar and yesterday's field of battle, she could see them. Grimm of a dozen different varieties - some totally alien to her - seemed to bubble up from their hiding spots and spread over yesterday's field of battle. The dead where enveloped in this swarm of darkness and lost.

Lodestar too was alive with activity. It's defenders seemed to unleash a flurry of attacks on any Grimm that came too close; particularly those that approached the still-present cracks in its outer walls. Yet for each Grimm they felled, another would set in upon them.

Turning her head to look at the others, Jade caught glimpse of Xuan Ba and the barely contained fury on his face.

[hr]

It was never fun waking up before dawn. There was little point in falling back asleep, as there wasn't enough time to get anymore meaningful rest, but it was always such a slog to try to start the day without the sun. Normally, Claire would just try to doze a few minutes longer, her mind numbly buzzing with that sensation of half-wakefulness.

Of course, sometimes exceptions had to be made. And if the howling of Grimm on the horizon, growing ever closer, was any indication, today was one of those times.

Claire rose with the rest of the camp, dressing in her armor and making sure her gear was ready for battle. She would've liked a cup of coffee to make sure she was fully awake, but the nervous adrenaline pumping through her veins made for a good substitute. A few warm-up stretches confirmed that her burns had healed up nicely during the night, though some of the spots still shone slightly pink. But in any case, the pain was gone and her flexibility was at 100%. She should be ready to face whatever the day held.

After confirming that the rest of her teammates were up and about, the young Huntress dashed to the edge of the campsite, trying to get a good view at the horde of Grimm converging down below. First Lodestar's initiation ceremony, and now this? This was turning out to be a pretty fantastic week!

Elva yawned and rubbed tiredly at her eyes as she holstered her battleaxe and followed the flow of people travelling through the camp. She hadn't gotten much sleep during the night and she was feeling rather guilty, having purposefully avoided her brother the evening before. She knew that he probably just wanted to apologize and make up the way he always did, but she'd been too embarrassed over her failed prank to face him. Now he'd probably been up all night fretting over her and she felt terrible about it.

Arriving at the edge of the camp Elva approached and stood alongside Jade, looking out at the horde of Grimm that had descended on yesterday's battlefield. All thoughts of her brother were pushed to the back of her mind as she recoiled in horror at the savagery before her. Loosening her axe in its sheath she turned to her team leader.

"Why are we just standing here? We can't let them desecrate the fallen like that!" she protested, angrily stamping and pointing out at the horde.

It was the echo of the howling that woke Di. Kicking herself mentally that she allowed herself to doze off for so long, she strapped her patta back on and ran out from the enclosure to look into the night and saw the Grimm swarming over the battlefield with her Faunus eyesight.

Leaping off and activating her Semblance, she glided back to camp and easily found Team JADE through Elva and Amber's excited speech.
