I just finished Red Dead Redemption, and I think I'm going to cry. Seriously, this is as close as I've ever come to crying because of a game.

John tells his family to leave and get out before more of the army shows up. After they leave John exits the barn and is killed by the very people who told him he'd be free after he tracked down and killed his old friends. In a hail of bullets John goes out, which was actually pretty cool and sad at the same time. His wife and son hear the gunshots and decide to go back to help John. As soon as they return to the barn they find the body, and the scene cuts to his funeral. Then we see Jack, John's son grow up and bury his mother. It was incredible sad. I mean I saw John's death coming but still.

Anyway to keep the thread going, post the saddest video game ending you've ever seen.

Do I win?

EDIT: Okay, okay, a specific example. Truth be told, I think the saddest ending I've ever seen was in Kanon. Specifically, <color=white>Makoto's ending.

So far, that's the only game ending that not only made me cry, it made me spontaneously start crying the next day. If the shattered remains of my masculine image weren't hard as steel, I'd be reluctant to admit to literally crying myself to sleep that night.

I'm pretty sure this game (RDR) is going down in the annals of game history because of how many people keep talking about the ending, crossing into Mexico, and other great parts from it.

Also, you played after the sad part, right? You have to to finish the story. Changes it from sad, to redeemed. ^_^

I was also going to go with Red Dead. It definitely brought out the biggest emotional response in me that a game ever has.

A bit more information would be usefull.
I know, right? Believe it or not, pal, not everyone is into obscure/weird Japanese stuff.

And with Japanese little girls involved, I'm pretty sure this will end badly.

That's what I get for not having that review finished, I suppose. Kana: Little Sister is almost memetic in its reputation for being tear-jerking, but most of the Escapist is outside the visual novel-playing demographic.

Suffice to say, of the game's six endings, most are on the level you'd expect from a game with a premise like "the protagonist grows up alongside his terminally ill younger sister."

Oh, Come on using Kana little sister is cheating... It like showing a kitten getting beat up.

Well my vote goes for Bioshock good ending. Its sad yet a happy one.

Sad video game endings eh?

Aren't ALL video games attempting a sad ending, although how bad it always turns out? <Absolute assumption with a slight slice of truth in it.

... I'd have to go with Gears of War 2 when...
they blow up Jacinto, their last place of refuge.

It's not sad at all, but no game has ever made me feel very "sad".

I was worried about that. Once you mention the "Recollection" and "Out of the Maze" endings, it's hard to tell where to go.

It's why I edited in the Kanon example...which, admittedly, I was totally serious about. I've finished Kana now, and while it definitely deserves its reputation, none of the endings had the sheer undiluted heartbreak of that one Kanon ending.

The neutral ending in BioShock 2. That was just plain miserable.

Also, obligatory mention of HL ep2.

Its more sad then Kana? Well, now i need to see this. And yet again my manlieness level will decrease.

And gotta go with Bioshock 2 good ending its like the first one. Sad yet happy.

I'd say a lot of the Heavy Rain Endings. If you don't save the kid, the kid's father kills himself, even in front of the woman who loves him. And every character can die.

Yeah, if you play as Jack, and go to Blackwater.... well, you'll find a new mission. ^_^

Well, it's not an ending, exactly, but...

When Emma died. :/ Only time I've ever shed a tear when gaming.

The ending for Final Fantasy 10 was bitter sweet, and even made me tear up like a little girl. Which is why Final Fantasy 10-2 was such a betrayal. Sure it had some good moments but it'd be like someone making a Romeo and Juliet 2 where they get resurrected or something and live happily ever after. The original story looses all the emotional impact because sometimes a bitter sweet ending is far more emotionally compelling. That's just ignoring the whole Charlie's Angels route the story took.

Anyway, I know some people say JPRGs are all about style than substance but I still felt Final Fantasy 10 had plenty of substance, subtext, did turn based combat right and had some really good twists going for it, leading up to the bitter sweet ending it should have just stopped there is all I'm saying.
