Oh, Come on using Kana little sister is cheating... It like showing a kitten getting beat up.
I was worried about that. Once you mention the "Recollection" and "Out of the Maze" endings, it's hard to tell where to go.

It's why I edited in the Kanon example...which, admittedly, I was totally serious about. I've finished Kana now, and while it definitely deserves its reputation, none of the endings had the sheer undiluted heartbreak of that one Kanon ending.
Its more sad then Kana? Well, now i need to see this. And yet again my manlieness level will decrease.
Specifically the one. The other endings had strong elements of bittersweetness (and unexpected happiness), but not on the level of Kana. Only Kanon's near-downer ending was that sad.

You know, it just occurred to me to look in the upper right corner of the image.

Suddenly, my confusion lessens.

Its not that bad there isnt that much sex in it. Its acully very minimal for a Visual Novel.
If i remember correctly.
And what little sex there is is between people of legal age, yes.

Goddammit, I'll have the review done before the week is up. Been trying to pound down a writer's block with the review prologue...

Wait wait wait.... according to the box, it's an "Erotic Bishojo Adventure game". And it's called KANA: Little Sister?

Is nobody else extremely creeped out by that? I mean, I know that the Japs have issues and all and it's good that they're so up-front about it but... isn't that kind of pushing it?

EDIT: Whoops, somewhat ninja'd.

You'd be surprised. The game does eventually deal with incest, but the main thrust of the story is the protagonist taking care of the title character, Kana (his little sister who has a terminal kidney disease) over a period of time from middle school to college.

...I say as if anything after the word "incest" would draw the slightest attention. Boy, I certainly can't wait to see the reactions to my review. This was honestly one of the most emotionally moving stories I've ever read, and I hope to at least communicate that much before the "ew, icky!" comments start to pop up.

A bit more information would be useful.
That's what I get for not having that review finished, I suppose. Kana: Little Sister is almost memetic in its reputation for being tear-jerking, but most of the Escapist is outside the visual novel-playing demographic.

Suffice to say, of the game's six endings, most are on the level you'd expect from a game with a premise like "the protagonist grows up alongside his terminally ill younger sister."
Sad like "Grave of the Fireflies"? Because I never cried at a movie but that one made me bawl. If the game is like that I'd definitely pick it up.

Oh god. The "bad" ending of Mass Effect 2 is so depressing. I can barely stand to watch it. Probably not everyone finds it as sad as I do but I'm just so attached to the characters. Even the one's I don't really like.

I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, and I have no desire to, because I know it would destroy me.

But yes, Kana's almost the quintessential utsuge ("depressing game") and possibly the most well-known visual novel there is. It's certainly one of the most influential, taking the genre away from its dating sim roots by focusing heavily on writing story development, and making sex a far less prevalent but more plot-appropriate writing tool.

I do recommend it, but I'll have a review out in User Reviews pretty soon, if you wanted to read that first. I've noticed people tend to get squeamish when sex is involved in these games; since this particular one can also involve incest (depending on in-game route), I'd expect that to be tripled.

It doesnt help to that they are called eroge to. And i have yet to see a Visual Novel aka eroge where there is no sex. Or as in Kana as little as possible, kinda.

Visual novel and eroge are two different things. A visual novel is a specific format of game. An "eroge" is just any game with sex in it. It also includes dating sims, RPGs like Sengoku Rance and Tears to Tiara, and stuff like that one controversial game that I refuse to name out of disgust.

As for non-pornographic visual novels, there are quite a few. Most of them don't leave Japan; the only ones I know of with official English releases are Hourglass of Summer, Tea Society of a Witch, and this one Ai Yori Aoshi tie-in VN. There are also games that were rereleased without adult content, like Fate/Stay Night: Realta Nua and the All Ages versions of Kanon and To Heart. And then there are the other games which never had sex at all, like Clannad, Ever17, and Planetarian.

I tend to get quite sad at most things but i was surprised at myself for getting so depressed over Assassins Creed 2, hardly a emotionally or intellectually challenging game but after completing it and starting my second playthrough as i sat on the roof of that Florentine church it hit me that within half an hour or playing he'd be dead

Seeing old snake and big boss reunited at the graveyard also tugged at the heartstrings, both AC2 and MGS4 have such beautiful soundtracks

The most recent game that brought me to tears was Red Dead Redemption, for obvious reasons.

But the one game where the ending brings me to tears every single time, even though I KNOW how it's going to end?

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.

I'm pretty sure this game (RDR) is going down in the annals of game history because of how many people keep talking about the ending, crossing into Mexico, and other great parts from it.

Also, you played after the sad part, right? You have to to finish the story. Changes it from sad, to redeemed. ^_^
What do you mean finish the story? Theres more when you play as Jack?
Yeah, if you play as Jack, and go to Blackwater.... well, you'll find a new mission. ^_^
Thanks for that info. Just finished it, and I have to say it did alleviate some of the sadness from the ending. It was nice to get some closure. Also the look on Jack's face at the end pretty much guarantees that we will see a Red Dead 3 with Jack as the main character. At the very least we can only hope.

The ending of the middle of bioshock (huh).

Where (Around the middle of Bioshock)
You ended up killing Andrew Ryan, that part was really one of the best part of any games I've ever played. I did NOT expect it for some reason. Many other people seem to disagree with me.

One of the endings for Dragon Age: Origins caught me amazingly off-guard in how touchingly sad it turned out to be. Far from how I had been planning to go along with it, for sure.
Here I was, playing a female elf mage romancing Alister throughout the game. I had already played once through on a male dwarf noble, so I was trying out something completely different.

I proceed to play through the game, and finally reach the Arch-Demon. Being the evil person that I am, I was planning on sacrificing my Warden to see what that would wind up being like. Kill the Arch-Demon, que talking cutscene between my Warden and Alister.

This is where things started taking a very sudden, different direction. I had no choice in the matter, Alister would have none of it. He sacrificed himself to keep my Warden alive after a surprisingly heart-wrenching talk with her. It was one of the few moments in a game that has near caused me to tear up, mainly because how unexpected it crept up and slammed into me.

The ending of Fallout 1 when you're exiled from the Vault. I guess you can't call it sad in a "it made me want to cry" kind of way, but for me it was pretty shocking and unexpected after all the things you did for those guys.
