Let's see

When your dog, the dog that waited for you for 30 or so years to make it out of that prison, jumps in front of the bullet for you. I screamed at the game and scared my roommates half to death
Words cannot describe how much rage was going through me when that happened. Shooting that guy in the head at the end was satisfying, but I really wish I could have made him suffer more. That was probably the most emotion Ive ever expressed at a video game.

1st place: The (supposed) Death of Sgt. Avery J. Johnson, Halo 3.

2nd place: FFXIII: Sazh's kid turns into a crystal, and later makes it look like he killed himself.

3rd place: Ending of Halo 3, Cheif and Cortana essentially wait to die, but then discover that they're lost in space, floating... drifting.... waiting.

last place: "Mama Mia!"
I literally yelled at my tv when I saw that happen, I was super pissed at Vanille and at Jihl for that, mostly Jihl though. I had to pause the game and walk away for a bit so I could get over it, thankfully he didn't die.

The part in Pokemon Red and Blue Mystery Dungeon where the main character dies, * sniff* never had i felt so much sadness over losing a fictitious character.

Wait, that got me thinking... Has there ever been a game where a major player character has committed suicide and not come back?

Well since it's so recent the one I can think of is the inFamous 2 evil ending.

The point where you slowly kill Zeke, he continues to try and get up and shoot you but you keep shocking him again until he stops moving. That was pretty horrible, especially after the Easy Going mission.

Also MGS3 when

you kill The Boss.

Uhhh..... If we're not counting sacrifices then I don't think so. I know there have been a few games where the character was about to before they were stopped, but none that I'm aware of that killed themselves and not came back.

You, sir, have got me thinking.

Many death moments in Metal Gear Solid games. Especially the demise of Olga, Emma, The Boss, Sniper Wolf. I am EXTREMELY tear-prone when playing the MGS series. God I love Kojima.

There's been a lot. I'm very emotional and it doesn't take much to set me off.
Especially when a character dies.

Saddest: When Shadow died in SA2, I was about ten at time of playing, I was inconsolable. Nothing could make me stop crying at all. It took me hours before I could finally stop the waterworks. Then a few years later, Sonic Team makes a bs answer and brings him back. It was much more poignant and emotional with him dead. 'sigh'

Oh HELL NO!!!: Playing ME1 and Virmire. Hate it! It's the only choice in both series where I can never say "That was the best choice". It's impossible and I always feel depressed and inhuman and I'm always subdued afterwards. I usually avoid the diplomatic approach to the final battle just to gain the satisfaction of shooting the bastard. That was for my comrade!!! This might also be why working for TIM in ME2 was a horrible aspect.

Setting aside those types of games, though...

Probably Final Fantasy VI, immediately after the fight against the Ghost Train. You know what I'm talking about.

Watching Cyan's dead wife and son board the train, hearing their last words to him, knowing there's nothing you can do to save them...

I'm serious. I described that scene to someone who hadn't played the game, and I very nearly couldn't finish, because my throat started to seize up.

FF VI was the best one in my opinion. There was just so much character in those little guys, much more than in the shit they make now... -_-
Agreed. That game had so much emotion in it, not just sadness, that I don't really have a saddest moment- I need a top three for it:

3rd - Gau meeting his father - poor kid
2nd - The town of children where you meet Terra (I can't remember the name)
1st - World of Ruin itself - you just finished learning everything about the world and it's gone. Over. Ruined. Even if you beat Kefka, the world isn't going back to normal and you're going to destroy all magic.

Makes me wish that Square-Enix would look back at what made them good to begin with... And I need to play it again

When Shinji Mikami got fired from Capcom instead of being green-lighted for God Hand 2.

....Oh, you mean in game?

That time in Minecraft where a creeper blew up a critical portion of the city I was building and destroyed the entire thing.

Dawdling aside, my real answer are:

2. Crisis Core. Any one who has played FFVII knows that Zack dies and how it happens. We all know it isn't really that pretty. Thus, I never expected it to make any sort of impact. However, the developers did it perfectly. They left that tragic event to three major things:

(1) The character of Zack: Zack was a really likable guy. He didn't have the typical JRPG emo characteristics. Instead, he was just enthusiastic about what he did and tried to keep his morals above all else. (2) The gameplay: It is in game where any person falls in love with the main character. Why? Because, at that moment, they are us. We are trying desperately to succeed even if the odds look slightly in our favor. No matter how battered and bruised the hero is, we, as players, will still push him. (3) The bonds: Zack made many bonds with various people throughout the title, and each one gives him a slot on his lovely roulette wheel. Still, as he takes hit after hit, he forgets all but one: the girl he loved. The girl who waited for him... UNTIL SHE MET CLOUD THAT CHEATING WHORE! Seriously, play Crisis Core then play FFVII. You'll be pissed at her.

Now, I digress to the one time in a game I cried. It still saddens me to this day and I almost teared up re-watching this scene on youtube to find it for all of you:

1. What I believe is the saddest moment in games comes from these two videos

The dreams from Lost Odyssey.

Each dream appeals to different types of people. One of them is bound to make you cry.

If you watch either video and want to discuss, quote away~

I have never been so upset at a game (at least, yknow, story/character wise) than with Valkyria Chronicles. They put so much in characterizing the people, have all the characters you use or play with have names, bios, and relations to each other, and then they do this:

After completing a mission, Rosie finally gets over her prejudice and learns to accept Isara as a friend. They are about to exchange gifts when Isara is shot and killed right there in front of her. Everyone else runs to fight off the enemy, but she, the tough and battle-ready type, just stands there in shock as Isara dies in her arms. Right in her fricken arms.

It wasn't even for some sacrifice to save someone or to defeat the enemy or accomplish a task. It just happened and no good came of it. No warning whatsoever.
From that point forward, I made sure every Imperial that crossed my path died. No exceptions.

Edit: Addendum:
Actually, I think there are a lot of small parts that kinda made me sad, just small minor things. Like, for example, Melville, the funny, upbeat, always energetic scout would always make this weird noise after defeating an enemy and it would make me laugh every time without fail. But, when he gets shot down, you see him limp on the ground begging for help; if misfortune finds that his life ends, he begs for someone, anyone, to please save him.

The game in general portrays very well how we can be so happy with our lives and with the people we know and love, and how war can tear it all away so quickly without mercy nor bias.

they should definately make a 3d remake of it, like what they did for 3 and 4 for the DS...

All of Shadow The Hedgehog made me cry. It was all down hill after Sonic Adventure 2.
Other than that, Pressly's quick death on Mass Effect 2. Just because he was played by Murdock from the OG A-Team. The saddest though is the good ending from Bioshock. So beautiful.
