So, what's the saddest movie you've ever seen? Is it just a movie that make you cry like a baby every single time you watch it?

Mine's kind of immature, but it's Lilo & Stitch. It's one of the saddest children's movies I've ever seen, and every time I watch it I cry. When they start going "Ohana means family, and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.", I lose it.

I saw it as a kid in theaters, and I cried the entire ride home.
On the flip side, Lilo & Stitch is also one of the funnier Disney movies I've seen, so it's happy/sad.

So what's your saddest movie, (or book/poem/passed-down-story)?

the end of toy story 3, i NEVER cry becuase of sad things, but i just lost it.
I cried at that one too. Someone got a little crazy with the end on it. I think it was the nostalgia for the most part. They had always been together, and the were going to end together. I always wondered that if the movie had ended like that, whether or not we would have seen headlines about people hurling themselves out of their windows from the grief.

Grave of the Fireflies

The movie starts with the main character starving to death, and the rest of the film is just a downward spiral of misery.

I only saw this movie once, and that was like 8 years ago, but it has practically burned itself into my memory by way of its shear sadness.

Toy Story 3. Holy crap Pixar, way to punch me in the gut with that incinerator scene.

I cried during The Help too though. Especially when one of the maids describes what happened to her son...

In The Mood For Love, by Wong Kar-Wai. I don't realize how much I care about the characters until I'm streaming tears. And that end scene in Angkor Wat... So beautiful. The music, the cinematography... agh.

Grave of the Fireflies, as mentioned above.

Also Chinatown, but that film doesn't make you sad or cry, it just makes you sit there realising that a small part of your soul is gone forever.

This. That film is the closest I have gotten to shedding a tear (I don't cry watching a film) as my eyes water up during that last scene with his sister (you know which one I'm talking about).

Also the film Leaving Las Vegas was also down right depressing as you are literally watching the main character killing himself.

Synecdoche New York. Has anyone of you guys seen that movie? Well, anyway, i was positively depressed at it's ending. I mean, i'm not even quite sure what it was about exactly but it certainly was depressing.

The funny thing is, I didn't cry when watchig this movie.

I cry easily, but only when it's sappy or emotional; Return of the King, The Land Before Time, Spirited Away.

But Grave of the Fireflies was simply too soul shattering for that. Just as when a real life personal tragedy occurs, I don't cry, I simply have an utterly stunned look on my face.

Dancing adorable penguins with the WORD "Happy" in the title.
And yet, that poor guy went through so much shit.

Well, as I've gotten older I've found I don't get quite as emotionally invested as I used to, so I suppose the saddest movie experience I ever had was The Fox and The Hound.

THe saddest movie I've seen recently was Birdemic.

A thousand times this, dear god, a thousand times this...

I don't cry that easily to films and damn, this one delivered a hell of a soul-destroying punch...

Though to suggest a film that not many have watched: Shadowlands, based on the true story of CS Lewis.

Grave of the Fireflies. I watched it once, cried, felt terrible for a few days and haven't managed to bring myself to watch it again since. That film does emotions on a level I hadn't seen before.

Put me down for "Grave of the Fireflies" as well. I actually bought two copies, one for me, and one for my girlfriend, who was living in Australia at the time, since I knew that if I let her borrow my copy, I would never get it back. Truly amazing animated movie.
