Mostly because if you listen carefully you hear struggled breathing at the beginning.

Probably Voice of the Soul by Death. The song is so soulful, and it makes me truly sad that the world lost its author almost a decade ago.

I don't think I could post anything to match this. You win, sir

Annnnd I'll just put in some stranger stuff then:

Everything about this first one has a very strange vibe.

This is all out depressing if you are already sad.

And this is a work of art, sad or inspiring depending on how you feel.

After hearing about Nujabes' death, I listened to that first song and couldn't help but cry.

This song is probably the saddest song I've ever heard (but in a very good way).

I don't know why, but "explore" has always struck me as depressing.

The Juggler by Weather report (it's not on youtube -.-) has always had a sad feeling to me.

Also, I don't care what you say. This is the saddest instrumental song ever. If you don't agree, you're wrong.

Burn Girl Prom Queen - Mogwai.

So sad, and it doesn't even need visuals to make you feel the depression.

George Clinton told the guitarist, Eddie Hazel, to imagine his mother had just died and then play his guitar. The result is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and probably the best guitar solo I've ever heard.

The fact that it was done in one take is mind-blowing.

Adagio for strings- by Sam Barber:

Yes, Barber's Adagio is pretty much obligatory for this list.

Although my personal favorite has always been Edvard Grieg's "Ases Tod" from Peer Gynt Suite No.1 I cannot listen to that piece without having a physical reaction in my body. It always gives me chills and it feels like the music is reaching into my chest and lightly squeezing my soul. Beautiful.

I still consider humming to fall under the category of an instrumental.

Anyway, Boadicea by Enya just has a sad feeling to it. Then again, maybe it's because I first heard it on an episode of Criminal Minds while a family burned to death so maybe that has something to do with why I feel this song is sad.
