Sailor Moon Crystal Trailer Debuts

First official trailer premieres for the much-anticipated anime reboot

Here's the first trailer for Sailor Moon Crystal, the highly-anticipated new anime adaptation of the classic manga series.

Originally published in 1992, Sailor Moon follows the adventures of a group of schoolgirl best friends who, er... moonlight as a team of magical superheroes charged with defending the Earth from incursion by demonic forces. A previous animated adaptation, begun shortly after the manga, became one of the most popular and trendsetting anime programs of all time and a major part of the genre's emergence into U.S. mainstream popularity in the 1990s.

Crystal is being touted as a more faithful translation of the original manga. Viz Media, which owns U.S. distribution rights to the entire franchise and is currently streaming the 90s anime on Hulu [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134579-Uncut-Original-Sailor-Moon-Coming-to-Hulu], is planning to begin streaming this new version (with a new English dub planned as well) in late 2014 with a DVD/Blu-ray release to follow.

If someone doesn't get their head bitten off in the first few episodes, I'mma be hella disappointed. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKx3d_RlGnI&t=0m36s]

This whole genre has been ruined for me. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZPSPFNupZw]

Ah, the anime that gave many a boy in the 90's that first tingle in their pants.
Thank the gods for 14 year old jailbait in tiny, tiny miniskirts.

The new designs look ok from what I see. I like that they have this sort of modernized 90's style, but their faces seem weirdly mature for some reason. Also, leg fetishists will have a field day, because those things go on forever.

Their faces look kinda weird, a little dead eyed and the defined lips seem out of place for the overall art style. Though I guess ultimately it'll come down to how well its animated.

Eh I was never a sailor moon fan, but I dunno a lot of comments I'm seeing seem to be along the same lines. Apparently its truer to the original manga but if they are going for nostalgia money they would have been smarter to simply emulate the original shows look since that's what all the SM fans want most I would think.

I really hope they didn't strip away the comedy and the occasional social commentary the original show had. That's what I myself liked about it.

all I want is for Nanoha to come in and beat them all up. After watching Madoka and Nanoha... HELL even Pretty Cure had great action; does Kill La Kill (Bully La Bully) categorize as magical girl? ANYWAYS I just can't see this series doing so well, I'm sure the first couple of episodes will be off the charts but give it time and interest will die quicker than a headless Mami

.......why does Sailor Venus have anal beads?

I don't remember her having anal beads in the old anime.

That exaggerated style is popular for bishoujo (pretty girl) manga/anime. Huge eyes, mature faces and long, slender proportions come with the style.

A few years ago, people said the sailor moon fandom is dead. Well guess what, it?s not!

Sailor Muooooon!

The extra long, skinny arms and legs bug me. But otherwise it looks so shiny and pretty.

For better or for worse, this is truer to the art style seen in the manga.

P.S. Thanks

Your absolutely right, but, since we are on the topic, those pesky real life teenagers and their skinny arms and legs bug the hell out of me. It's either they are too fat or they make a starving Ethiopian look well fed.

If you thought MLP:FIM was a surprise hit...
Oddly enough, that was my first thought as well. Hell, I was interested in the original cartoon, so maybe I'll give this a watch, too.

But I'm more interested in, and perhaps ritchards is, as well, the potential fandom that happens after this version is released.

I can't wait for episode 4 when Sailor Venus gets her head bitten off by a Lovecraftian monster she thought was dead. It's gonna be right up there with Sailor Mercury becoming a demon after killing 2 random guys on a train in episode 8. Luna's cheerful exposition on the true horror of being a Sailor Scout at the end truly captured the joyful spirit of the magical girl genre.

Good times!

That's Venus's 'love me chain' her weapon from the manga.

I read through every comment to see if someone else answered that question first because I didn't want to spam the guy. Three points to you, sir.

I'm okay with the new designs, although I think Usagi has a bit too much hair on the top of her head. It makes her head look too big, especially when she does her classic pose at the end and tilts her head forward a bit. Too much yellow.
Still trying to figure out why Mercury, the quietest, shyest, least flirty of the group gets the most revealing outfit, but I'm okay with it.

I hope that they don't follow the manga too closely. The other girls are pretty much useless in the manga. All they do is get captured, killed, or give their powers to Usagi. They rarely got to fight and do stuff on their own. Also, I hope Rei's personality carries over from the old show. I liked how she was a foil for Usagi more than being the mysterious shrine maiden that she is in the manga.

Pretty ballsy to make an unironic new edition to a genre that has been deconstructed so thoroughly and so recently.

That style, though. I can't even watch that trailer without feeling like a weird pervert. Hopefully the kid's will like it, anyway.

That.....doesn't make it any better.
