Now, most of you can only talk about SR2 because...you probably haven't played 1, let's face it. It's a 360 exclusive, with no PC/PS3 version. It also had none of the hype or fanfare, because it couldn't be marketed as the "anti-GTA4"...as there WAS no GTA4 for people to whine about. I wasn't very excited for Saint's Row 1 as matter-of-fact. I had a pre-order on it only because it came with a demo disc with other bonuses, and it would let me play what's basically a GTA without switching to the PS2, either. This was before I had Live, and I couldn't download demos. And before I had HD, too. So, the PS2 used the same cable slots. And it was before Gamestop's BIG pre-order push, too. This is when you used to pre-order because you were actually concerned a game might run out of copies. Saint's Row's pre-order bonus was a fucking rarity. I'd actually transferred it from a pre-order for Ninety Nine Nights, a move that ended up very wise. I have played N3 since then, and it's a decent Dynasty Warriors clone, but nothing remotely spectacular. Pretty as hell, though.
Labeled a GTA clone, but one of the first ones to REALLY deserve that moniker. Jak 2 wasn't really a GTA clone. I don't remember a heavy platforming focus in GTA, do you? It was also the first one to genuinely challenge GTA. Although it wasn't until the sequel that it would really break out into true success. It also told a story well beyond anything the start of the game hinted at. Each of the gangs actually had compelling narratives, magically. Oh, and it really supported custom soundtracks, via an MP3 player...that let you listen to the in-game radio tunes, (or custom playlists, only minus the guide menu fuss), while walking/driving/murdering people. I'm still pissed that SR2 removed this awesome feature! I'd love to listen the SR2 soundtrack while not it a car! In many ways, I love 1 more than 2. The soundtrack was better, imo. And introduced me to The Aquabats, my second favorite band ever. The phone system was better, with cooler homies and more random street numbers. And the overall plot was better, too. IMO.
TLDR?
What are your thoughts on Saint's Row 1?
