I've been thinking about finally getting around to picking up Saints Row the Third. However, I don't have access to my Xbox currently (plus the damn hardrive's full). So I was wondering how the PC version played. Is it playable, or is it ruined by being on PC, really needing a controller instead of keyboard/mouse?

The weapon selection is a bit iffy at times, but it's very well playable on the PC! I had no issues whatsoever.

Aiming is probably a ton easier with a mouse instead of a controller.

The PC version has everything one could ask for. Detailed graphics options, rebindable keys, no forced mouse acceleration, it's all there.

Its a far better port than 2. I still prefer to use a controller for those games, but its totally serviceable with keyboard/mouse.

After using both an xbox controller and a keyboard, the keyboard plays better when it comes to particular things (mostly driving that epic jeticopter)

I played it with keyboard and mouse and it played beautifully. Everything handled well. At no point did I find myself thinking "I wish I had a controller for this".

Very solid port. Had no bugs, no crashes, graphics were great. Solid game all around.

I heard the 2nd one ported terribly though.

Damn. You guys should have told him that the game is unbearably boring before he purchased it.
Why would we lie to him like that? That wouldn't be very sporting of us.

The game works well and has everything a PC port should have, but the engine isn't exactly resource-light as you would imagine. Otherwise, not a bad PC port.

Not only is it relatively easy to handle with keyboard and mouse, if you feel like you need a gamepad you can plug one in, start the game up and hot swap without anything else needed. The game will detect which input you're using and adjust accordingly with no interruption in gameplay.

When it comes to variable control systems, it's probably the best I've seen.

Contrary to many people's opininion on here, I will have to say that playing SR3 is much easier and fun on any of the consoles compared to the PC version, but that's just me.

However, I don't think that you would have a problem while playing on the PC as long as you're comfortable with it, as the only things that are different are the controls. Not much is taken out from the PC version as you may see from many comparison videos on Youtube.

I dropped that game about 20 minutes into it. While driving it snaps your camera to look forward and you have no control over it. I like to look around while I drive and that game would not let me. It ruined the experience for me.

Also the music tracks all suck. I have yet to hear a good song in that game.

As above.

The game support controllers and if you use an Xbox 360 controller on the PC version is it no different to the console one.

Thanks for the replies, it's currently downloading from steam.
From my experience you can just drive with the controller and then put it down and use the keyboard and mouse when you need to shoot and it works like a dream.

It's pretty easy to run for the most part until something big goes down like massive scripted demolition or something, speaking from still running a dual core and a mid-range GPU from 3 years ago

It runs smoothly and looks good. I played it with a controller so I can't say how well it works with a mouse and keyboard.
I suggest getting an X-Input compatible controller for games of this type. This game doesn't require much precision aiming anyway and using the triggers for accelerating/breaking works great.

As someone who's worked on the game, I hope you enjoy it and thanks to the others for the support!

Sleeping Dogs is like that too. I think it's lessened if you use a gamepad, as you'd be constantly sending camera input, while with a mouse, once you stop to look somewhere, the game thinks you've stopped and goes "Oh you're moving in a car and not looking around, I'd better refocus the camera to help you drive."

Shame it a game killer for you though - I had to switch to a gamepad for Sleeping Dogs because of that, but didn't have to in SR3.

I'll see if I can alert my colleagues at Volition to include an option on the PC to not snap the camera if you're using a mouse when driving.
