You can make high heels match the tone of a genre easily. RWBY is a perfect example, and so is Bayonetta. Goofy series with over the top action and clearly divorced from the reality we know. High heels fit in perfectly there. In a mainly serious game like Metroid, they don't fit.

Eh, fair enough. Chell's high heels don't fit at all, I'll admit that.
Fair enough as well, but I would semi-disagree on tone of seriousness. I think any kind of story would have to have some kind of degree of seriousness in it in order to, well, tell a story. Even comedies are not exempt from this.

This is true, but there are degrees of seriousness. Bayonetta and RWBY both have a lot of quirky moments but they're still fairly grounded in a dramatic story...well RWBY is. The thing is, the universe that the story takes place in is still divorced from ours enough to allow for such acceptable breaks from reality. Metroid, while also far from reality, has a bit more of a grounded tone to it. A more level headed and really dark experience. It's difficult to put into words.

No, it's cool. Even if I am someone who is more likely to defend such things, I get what you're saying. If it was Metroid, then yeah, I too might raise an eyebrow at such things for Samus, but I wouldn't exactly have a problem with those things in stuff like SSB, since even as a fighting game it's pretty far out there compared to others and has taken some liberties with the games featured in it in general.

I just hate zero-suit samus, heels or no heels on the basis that for basically being an alt-mode for her, it gets faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more attention, screen time, and advert space than....you know........like Samus-samus. srsly, google image search Samus. Not zero-suit samus, just samus.

zero suit samus didn't cement the metroidvania genre, this ***** did [http://www.smashbros.com/images/og/samus.jpg]. give that ***** the respect she deserves
Well the thing is that the suit isn't Samus. Samus is Samus whether she's in the suit or not and it would seem people prefer the Samus that actually has a face.

I care because I liked the sensible heroine who ran around in battle armour and was no-nonsense about it (Except when celebrating in the endings and so on >.>).

No but seriously if we're kicking off about raised heels then Portal boots must mean Chell is sexist right

Holy false equivalence, Batman!

Hopefully, the camera zooms in on his ass a lot.

I'd like to see how many of the "just play the games, it doesn't matter!" crowd start cvomplaining that you stare at the back of MC's sack for half the game.

Well, they separated Zero Suit and Power Suit Samus into different character slots, so one could just play Samus and ignore the... admittedly odd choice to give her high heels. I honestly did not notice it until it was pointed out to me. Wow, that's a bizarre choice. I wouldn't neccesarily call it offensive, but it certainly is DUMB.

And I'm mixed about the suit redesign. SSB4 is using her power armor from Other M, and while I can't stand being reminded of that game, I must admit the rebooted power armor looks pretty great in action.

Next Halo game we should introduce Zero-Suit Master Chief [http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1638156458_1/2014-Summer-newest-men-s-swim-briefs-sexy-men-royal-blue-swim-shorts-men-s-Tether.jpg_220x220.jpg]. Sure, why not? I'm not exactly a fan of faceless protagonists anyway.

If I can handle seeing Snake's ass for most of MGS games without complaining, then I can sure as hell can play a Halo game featuring naked Master Chief without complaining.

Because this exists:

Look at that. She's over six feet tall outside of armor. This picture represents everything you really need to know about Samus. No need for high heels.
I have a thing for tall, powerful women and am kinda upset that they retconned her proportions to be daintier. I just like the idea of the woman inside the massive power suit having a similarly imposing build herself.

But that's just me.

I don't think zero-suit Samus is that sexualised. She's basically a female Megaman (same colour suit too!). Is Megaman sexualised for looking like he's wearing a skin-tight suit? Is Superman sexualised for doing so?

The heels are ridiculous though. Yeuchh.

sounds like a good idea to me. I wonder how they'll compensate for the loss of power though... maybe put rockets in his briefs so he can use teabagging as an offensive maneuver?

Maybe call them Rocket Nads?

I remember a few people were confused about where she would keep those. I would assume that she would put them i the same place s the Paralyzer but that's just me.

I also found it a bit silly that people were talking about how they are impractical just for the fact that they are heels and not because putting rockets anywhere near your feet is a bad idea.

I think what's got people up in arms about it is more the fact that is was just...unnecessary. You can't compare to Bayonetta or Ada Wong because they rocked up on the scene with heels and sexual aura all over the place. Samus never was, and that was her appeal - that she kicked ass in the power suit, and most people didn't even know she was a girl. Now you find out she is, and then it's like "hey let's capitalize on this", rather than keeping in with what made her such an ass-kicker in the first place.

So in a way, yeah, "because she wasn't before and now she is" is the real argument, valid or not. I think the heels has got shit-all to do with it any ways, its the sexualizing in general.

I don't even hate Other M as much as most people seem to. I mean I get it, but it really comes down to the fact that the gameplay needed an excuse for why Samus wasn't running in at full power and the guys at Team Ninja thought it would be silly if she wandered in, got hit really hard , lost all her gear and what do you know this space station for no good fucking reason had most of the same equipment lying around. Cus you know, that made sense.

As far as the heels go they are just tacky. I have no problem with putting her in heels. I thought she had them before, they were flat like elevated sandals or lifts that some guys were if they are Tom Cruise but I thought she always.

It's likely I just don't know what I'm talking about but I flat out don't feel that these heels are being sexualized or that they are sexing up Samus in any significant way. It's not like she's shoving them in your face telling you how she will "punish" you with them or telling us how the space age cushioning technology makes it feel like an orgasm with every step. I can see them being sexy if you are into that sort of thing but in the end the are just a specific type of footwear that has a rocket function. I just see Samus wearing a funky pair of boots that look more like high heels and that's it.

Changing the cliche excuse for Samus losing her equipment in every game only to find it all again is actually a pretty good idea. Replacing that with a system where an actual character has to give Samus permission to use common sense upgrades like the heat resistant varia suit in a lava zone is putting us right back where we started, except now we have a character to focus our hate on for why Samus is purposely gimping herself.

The story mechanic involving her armor dissolving away when she fights Ridley or gets knocked out by Adam is another step back and way WAY worse than the silliness of losing her upgrades every game. So it's a nice idea marred by a terrible terrible execution.

People will stop caring about the looks of a character, particularly female ones, when the devs stop caring so much about making them eye candy.

Samus in high heels? Not necessary. I'd say a vast swath of the world is fine with her in at most an inch, or two of heels, like boots, but not high heels.
I'd say a vast swath of the world was used to Samus in a full body suit under her armor, even though Samus was not in one originally under that armor, but now she's in a form fitting top, and shorts.

Now I'm generally not one to hate it, as I'd rather look beyond the fan service, but I understand where it's coming from.

I don't really care as long as she's fun to play as. Ah. Fun. I remember when I supported higher end graphics on video games and got smacked down because "Fun should be the first priority!" Now that everyone is on a sexism kick, when I say "I don't care as long as it's fun and looks good" the response is usually "Not if it's sexist, revealing, clothing that assumes her gender for her!"

People are odd. Just have fun with the game and stop worrying to much. You're turning video games into work for yourselves. They're trying something new and different for Samus and there used to be a day where that was encouraged as opposed to smacked down.
