I really liked it. I loved the sense of freedom the enormous map gave, the sheer amount of stuff you could do and the traditional humour of rockstar it kept. I disliked gta4 it was all dull and dreary everything was depressing you went from being an immigrant with nothing no respect or houses or money in your pocket to an immigrant with no respect, little money and a few shit holes. you never really had any power, you were just a food soldier throughout the whole game.

-50cent gangsta feel=lame
the gangsta-gangsta feel was strong selling point actually ask in california. I personally hated san andress because the characters were cliche and the backrounds was either too brown or too black. atleast there wasn't a tutorial for every 2 steps I took out of my home base (GTA4 dis, badumpish)

I enjoyed playing through San Andreas but to be honest, I had more fun after I'd completed to main story and could just dick around. The map wash uge and, despite what some people have said, had loads of interesting stuff in it. The dam, the sattelite dish, the canyon, Mount Chiliad etc... I had loads of fun driving through the desert stopping at every hick town to blow people away ala Natural Born Killers. Vice City is still my favourite to date, proper Goodfella's style gangsters, aweosme music and a really cool storyline, plus thehandgun sounded badass. (An odd thing to say I know, but the guns in SA sounded pathetic).

Also I thought LC: Stories was miles better than GTA3.

I can safely say that it is one of my favourite games to date.

I became attatched to the characters, and enjoyed the varied sandbox landscape.

I think Vice City had the best story, acting and atmosphere of any of the GTA III-era games, and loses points only for a very flat map. San Andreas' story was also good and the environments were terrific, and the Sims-esque additions of girlfriends and clothes were optional and gave definite game benefits if you were willing to go through it. GTA III probably was a better complete game but there was no connection to any of the characters, especially your mute protagonist.

And GTA IV - well, I can't find myself willing to pay for it. Niko Bellic seems a lousy character to play as next to Tommy Vercetti or CJ, the cast (especially your caazan) seem either bland or annoying next to the other games and while the city looks like probably the best one yet there's something very off-putting about its high-level graphics. VC and SA were great experimentation with the format, and then all got shoved away.

Niko was the worst main character mainly because of the whole
'I've come to America to be all good and start clean' and then you kill everyone you fucking meet for twenty hours at least CJ basically said he was gonna kill some fools or least never claimed he wouldn't
also GTA 4 had only one good character little Jacob, Packie was alright but his name is a racial slur which pisses me of. (good goin there Rockstar why not Paddy thats what actually shorten Patrick to)

Wait, it has been catching crap? Where???!!!

In a game where I can dress as a multicoloured hot-dog, and shoot rockets at cows while driving a flying monster truck painted with the American flag, it has to be good.

San Andreas was super-impressive and had a lot going for it as far as gameplay went... BUT I also found it really alienating. The dialogue and characters just REALLY put me off. I wasn't fond of the idea of being this gang-banger/crack dealer, which I didn't know was going to be the case when I bought the game. I figured I was settling in for more mobster action, which is one of the things I enjoyed about the series. Worse yet, none of the characters were amazingly likeable. One of the first cutscenes, where one of your fellow gang members and his wife or girlfriend or something, threaten one another with physical abuse, "f***" being every other word out of their mouth, stands out in particular. Ten minutes into the game I decided that I really didn't want to spend the next 40 hours of gameplay with these people. Thing is, I got enough of them in the hallways at my high school.

San Andreas was probably my favorite out of the whole series, after that the series took a turn for the worst, although GTA4 managed to claw a little bit of dignity back, still disappointing.
thats why handheld sequels suck, can't be better then the original...ever

I think it was the only GTA I have ever played, and I didn't find it that interesting. I always thought that the GTA series was overhyped and juvenile, but that complaint confuses me now given how much time I have spent on Saints Row 2 a very obviously juvinile game.

I think if you're able to respect the culture that it drops you into (and very accurately, I might add--can't imagine the research they did for this game), then you would be able to enjoy it. It has all of the standard GTA elements, including over-the-top missions, free-form gameplay and lots of blood, but the backstory is compelling. Combine that with a top-notch reproduction of Los Angeles (San Fran and Las Vegas were less impressive) and an authentic soundtrack from the era, it's very well done.

I pretty much liked it (better than GTA4). Someone posted that the characters were a bit bipolar (I agree). and the cutscene graphics were sometimes too bad. I remember doing the cutscene before a mision in the game's evening and all the characters where just black silluetes I died and re did it in the games morning and the characters were perfectly clear. other than that I loved the game.
