Yes, you just read that right, San Fran is thinking of sales of goldfish in its city borders.

First kittens, then puppies and hamsters and now goldfish?

San Francisco's Animal Control and Welfare Commission is recommending that the City ban the sale of goldfish, tropical fish and guppies in its borders, according to Matier and Ross.

The recommendation to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is part of the commission's ongoing efforts to discourage "impulse buys" of animals.

The commission's ban would cover pet stores and breeders in the City. It comes after more than a year of study and findings that aquarium fish are often mass bred under inhumane conditions or stripped from the wild.

However, the ban is only a recommendation and not likely to be passed by the full board of supervisors to become law.

As Supervisor Sean Elsbernd told the San Francisco Chronicle "this is another Animal Welfare idea that will end up in the dustbin of history and go absolutely nowhere."

so what do yout hink, should this go through? I mean I'm all for curbing an impulse pet buying, thats how you get dogs that end up in a pound or worse, in the big black bag. But goldfish? I mean, my college didnt allow pets, but they still allowed Golfdish (if you had less then a five gallon tank).

And first, I though you really meant "goldish" and I was thinking "WTF is a goldish?" Then I thought you meant Goldifsh the crackers, and I was ready to get my rioting gear.

Then I see you mean the actual fish and I am severely disappoint.

I mean their heart is in the right place but they are doing it in a idiotic way

Funny, I thought I read the title as Goldish...

OT: Kind of silly, though it is a noble goal of sorts.

San Francisco is going to disappear up it's own well meaning ass. If you're going to ban the sale of anything that can be abused, you won't be able to sell anything in the city before long.

I'm pretty sure you can still get cats and dogs from animal shelters; they just don't sell them because too many are in shelters, or are farmed out from puppy mills. I wonder if they do the same for goldfish or hamsters.

I'm not trying to adamantly convince people of a certain position, but just so you have all the info read here, and scroll to the comments at the bottom:

We really like to pass silly laws, including dozens of well meaning ones that cannot be enforced, or feel too much like an encroachment of rights, or feel like a despot has taken over Candyland.

Like toys in happy meals. If I'm getting my kid the stupid happy meal, I want the toy.

On the other hand, the ban of plastic bags in grocery stores did get a lot of us into the habit of bringing our own bags. But it does seem laws come to San Francisco for tryouts the way performers trek to Hollywood to get into show business.

Most fail, but the ones that succeed make a difference.

But as one who lives here, I get to endure all the ones that fail, even if for a spell.

My enthusiasm knows bounds.

Thank God! I thought the title was talking about the delicious cheese crackers. A rant was a brewin' I tell you.

Anyway, this seems silly. Most pet fish don't live long as I understand it.
