Hi everyone, just a sudden thought that popped into my head...what is your favourite sand box game and why?
Mine is definitely saints row 2 just because of the over the top game play, fun side missions and also the fact that you got to spray s**t all over rich people houses...kinda added to the entertainment value ^.^

GTA IV, an incredivbly immersive experience with an engaging story line (less so towards the end) and a brilliant city that I can happily just drive about in for hours. It is also a biting satire and possibly the greatest "Noir" of the past ten years (with an honourable mention to Brick (Johnson 2005)).

It is my favourite game of all time (Vice City coming a close second), I am one of the few people I think to consider it pretty much perfect (pretty much.. Roman fuck off I don't want to go bowling, NO FUCKING CHECKPOINTS!?!?) but other than that pretty much perfect.

Garry's Mod. It is a sandbox in the truest sense of the word. No monsters, no gameplay objections, no arbitrary limits on what part of the map you can and can't use, just you, tools, props, and a physics engine to torture.
That and hurling screecher kids into prison for a laugh.

Prototype. I like refreshing ammo using stealth kills after emptying an assault rifle by tagging infected. That, and shooting down helicopters with tanks.

I've been playing Red Dead again recently, and I believe that it's by far the most spectacular and impressive open world ever created in a video game. The characters genuinely feel alive, and it's not silly like GTA is.

Ragdoll them instead. Turn them into part of the physics engine, then weld them to a giant, spinning cock. THEN micspam "You spin me right round" by Dead or Alive. Then laugh evilly as they beg for mercy!

I actually did just that to one minge once. It was hilarious. Three of the other admins got the idea, I shrugged and said "Why the hell not?" so I supplied the engine and the ragdoll to be tortured. Because, you know, I just happened to have a V8 the size of a small block of flats just sitting around in my dupes.(No, seriously, I did, it was lulz) One of the others supplied the statue, cock and music, and the one with the fastest rig recorded it. Dunno if it ever got upped though.
Sir you should have that immortalised in history!

Assassins Creed 2.

Lots of different locales, each more beautiful than the last and each looking considerably different, the ability to get around the world map very quickly if you need to, the free running mechanic is smooth and entertaining just in itself, a million different ways to approach/escape from every objective. A large variety of fun medieval weapons to use, there is nothing quite so entertaining as nailing an aerial assassination on two unsuspecting guards from a height that would surely kill most mere mortals, likable characters, good story, great variety of side missions, and overall days of fun to be had.

Need I go on?

When I told FRAPS to record I dropped to 4FPS. :\

Just rendering the contraption brought my poor old rig down to 12. Probably shouldn't have had enormous functional zoomies on the engine, but eh. Looked badass. I'll ask around maybe the footage still exists.
I must see it! Then I can die a happy man!

I liked Vice City, and I've been favorably impressed by Red Dead Redemption. Generally though, sandbox isn't my thing.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The game was a schizophrenic mess. It was a serious gang drama, a rags-to-riches story, a violent epic with a murderer as the protagonist, a crime dramedy, with sub-stories involving government conspiracies, corrupt law officers, real-estate practices, and even freaking aliens, surrounded in a goofy as shit exterior with over the top characters and incredibly stupid mini-games. What's not to love? This game is easily in my top 5 and by far my favourite sandbox and western-made game.

Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

Which also happens to be one of my most favourite video games ever.

I would say saints row 2, gta 4 felt too restricted mission wise, no flashing pensioners
