Satanism: Misunderstood

Finally! Someone who actually agrees with me and my friend that Satanism is a misunderstood religion.

Granted, it's bullshit just like every other religion, but its not as bad as everyone says. Note, I'm not Satanist, I'm like the OP, but I'm not fully Buddhist, its just the closest religion I am to. But, in reality, I guess I'm agnostic.

Hmm, it seems odd that you called religions bullshit and yet say you are close to being Buddist. How are you closest to being Buddhist? I would like to take some of their good, but I find it's much the same as nearly most other religions.

I don't find religions are bullshit. I don't believe in them, but I wouldn't go that far to spread that sort of hate about them. Religion is good, fanatics are bullshit.
I just don't really like to side with Buddism. No partying, anti-homosexual, they have a lot of the same values of Christianity too. It's strange to go with one, but denounce the other.

And religion can be somewhat good, but only in the hands of rational people who can take morals from the little fairy tales in the bible and apply it into their own lives. But, unfortunately, there aren't many rational people in this world and they take these stories as truths and try to enforce these laws upon everyone else.

How about this, just look up The Westboro Baptist Church. That is what happens when you put religion in the hands of irrational people and this goes on constantly in my state and pretty much everywhere else I've been.

I personally find that to live only for oneself is completely lacking in maturity. I also find that to believe myself or any other human being to be the highest form of life in the universe is absolute foolishness.

Use your imagination for a moment-- we're all gaming geeks here, I believe, so that shouldn't be too hard.

Imagine there WAS an omnipotent being that created everything. Would it not have the right to impose any rules it desires, regardless of how fair or unfair?

What if it decided to make its presence known, and deigned to offer further existence to its creations past the normal time allotted to them?

What if it decided not to extend a friendly hand to those who actively rebelled against all it stood for; those who unapologetically did whatever they wanted regardless of who they hurt?

Then again, imagine after a long while, that it DID stack the odds back in favor of its creation.

And imagine further still-- if its creation decided NOT to believe in it, would it oblige by poofing itself out of existence?

Stop allowing yourself to be lead around by everyone who paints a picture of Christianity in old paintings with bearded saints in them. Why not study it for yourself instead of echoing all the same old bullshit I always hear from atheists? Make your OWN choices, not just what is currently popular! Approach the issue of faith the same way you would approach any piece of critical thinking: weigh the choices and consider the consequences.

Is it really so awful to live for others and treat them decently? If aforementioned omnipotent being did indeed exist, would it be at all wrong to dedicate yourself to it? I know it's not cool, but since when do geeks need to be cool?

Sure, I'll get some hate mail for this, but I just thought that those who find satanism so "enlightening" might like a little "enlightening" about the religion you would rather taunt than study.

Anyway. I've been outside of the states before (Canada, the UK, and Australia to be exact), and its nowhere near as religious crazy as my town is. I'm actually thinking of moving there.

But no, I don't think every one who is religious is bad. I know plenty of people who are religious who are some of the nicest people I've met, its just a lot of them here go crazy. Every day there are some protesters with signs of aborted fetuses or a list of everyone who is going to hell (which usually consists of everyone)

Hmm, sounds it. I mean, I live in Queensland Australia and am going to live in Canada in 7 days (WOO!) so I've mostly avoided fanatics all my life. Most religious people I know generally keep their practices to themselves and are friendly awesome people.

If you become a Christian and the Muslims were right (hypothetically) then at worst you are in the same position you would have been had you remained an agnostic or whatever you are. So what do you lose in the grand scheme of things? As I have said before if you die an Agnostic or Atheist then no matter who is right you are not going to benefit from it. So with that in mind its really kind of stupid...for lack of a better word...to argue "what if Christianity is wrong?" Even if it were wrong then it still doesn't change the fact that so are you.

Unfortunetly, only a few people in my town are like that. Some are, and I'm friends with them (most of my friends are atheist or agnostic though) but mostly its people like Fred Phelps. Canada is BEAUTIFUL this time of year! What part are you going to?

Let me save you some money. Satanism isn't a real religion. It's just libertarianism [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism] sold as an anti-christianity to rebellious and gullible teens.

This. Christianity, and all religions for that matter, tried to teach one before they became corrupted by humans: live your life, but dont impede anyone elses. Satanism sounds alot like a gimmick to sell to unruly teens whose parents "don't understand them." Not to impose beliefs on anyone, but if your looking for an answer to why "God doesn't love you," just follow Deism. It basically says that God made the universe through scientific means, but died/is incapable of controlling/doesn't give a shit about what happens to you or humanity. I like to think He's generally entertained by us, but facepalms quite frequently.

First of all, I can think of a few better characters than Satan...the computer from Portal for instance (Cake anybody?)

Second of all I prefer the Bible to Paradise Lost when it comes to actual religious text. That is not to say that Paradise Lost is not a fascinating piece of fiction. I agree with your recommendation but its about as reliable as Dante' Inferno (another good read) when it comes to religious studies.

You forget that the idea of the Bible isn't supposed to be an epic struggle between Satan and God. Satan was a fallen angel who attempted to usurp/upset God's reign. That was his folly, his evil.

Once again, an Old Testament story taken seriously will not make sense. It's metaphorical; mythology, in a way. The story of Satan is to teach that you do not have the power to defeat God; simple as that.

AntiChrist brings an interesting argument by bringing up Pascal's Wager. This is why I'm not a huge fan of Pascal's Wager. Nor am I one who has strong beliefs in an eschaton.
One's belief in a religion should not be some form of insurance policy.

The Satanist sect I was introduced to were full of middle-aged mature individuals. I don't see anything immature about their participation in their belief.

Well that makes sense, I guess. Except for the fact that Satanism is a religion (in the least strict sense of the word; IMO, in the same way Scientology is a religion), and religions want you to follow their line of thinking.

incorrect. many religions do not proselytize. satanists don't really give a rat's ass what you do, because ultimately they only really care about themselves. if you agree with them, great. if not, whatever.

if you want a more mainstream example, i've never heard of Jews actively trying to convert anyone, and some Orthodox communities actively discourage conversion.

Religion is an idea itself, I'm glad somebody understands it. The Bible isn't a historical book, it's a story book disigned to change people to be good. Buy it man!
