I urge you folks to take a look at this.

Plus as has been stated by TimeLord below there is nothing to worry about here.

I thought Ditzy was the fan name for Derpy's child?

Anyway, as a couple of people have said already. They aren't changing it.

no, you didn't miss a thread. We don't talk about pony stuff in the forums, come to our usergroup for that.
Ha! Sorry...

Like I said in OP, I'm not much for actually making threads. Although that does explain the lack of Pony threads I've seen lately...

Why cant we discuss ponies in the forums @pinkamena?
I understand we get trolled allot.
But that´s what moderators are for they warn the trolls that go too far.
We talk about pc exclusivity, we get hardcore pc dickheads calling console gamers retards.
We make a mlp thread and talk about that,We get trolls calling us manchildren,fur-fags,or the like.
what's the difference?

I've never heard "derp" used as a derogatory term against mentally handicapped people, I've only heard it used to denote stupid people or something stupid.

At any rate, I'm chocking this up as a parental overreaction. Derpy should (and will, as I'm seeing) stay in the show.

Stuff like this is only offensive if you look at it like it could be offensive.

Just one question: What on earth are helicopter parents?

I just have this baffling picture stuck in my mind now:

HELLO SON! We're your real parents!
...strangely I have that movie...

A Helicopter-Parent is a parent that hovers over their children, watching and controlling virtually every aspect of their lives. I used the term because they seem to think that everything has some sort of child-innocence destroying fault...

Example...one of my friends wasn't allowed to play Pokemon because they evolved...
Speaking of Pokemon, this sounds a lot like the whole Jinx thing back in the good old days of Pokemon.

Because well most pony threads are just bad experiences for us bronies, simple as that. We aren't like the PC elitists who have to defend a big purchase and love arguing. We just want to like a show and share it with people sometimes, not argue about it with some random other user. That's why bronies themselves are making sure there isn't many pony threads. This one is fine since well, the Escapist loves a bit of "People got offended for silly reasons" threads.

OT: Well it looks like nothing will happen to Derpy, which is awesome.

I know I never imagined her speaking that way.
Part of the problem is that the voice actress thought Derpy was male. Apparently she was mimicking a specific kid she used to know.
I just thought she sounded Canadian.

But yeah, this whole fiasco has taught me one thing at least; that the word ableist exists, and that I despise it, almost as much as I despise the word heteronormative.

What about "ageist"? It's when you discriminate based on a person's age.

Thread over, then? Better put up another link while it lasts.

I can almost, kinda understand complaints about the voice, I can see how it could be interpreted as a stereotypical "retard" voice. But she's been clumsy since the beginning (Remember the time she dropped roughly four thousand pounds worth of junk of Twilight's head?) and changing that now would be like changing Fluttershy into a speed demon, wrong on every conceivable level.

I've heard that the term "Derp" is actually copyrighted by some company, and that's where the trouble is. Apparently the team never actually knew that people were offended until other people started telling them not to take the offended people seriously.

Oh good, a slightly less flame-baity pony thread to link the group in:

According to these, names can not be copyrighted among other things in the United States. So if Hasbro wants to name a pony Derpy, they've every right to. You could trademark the word, which may be the problem. But you can only trademark a word if it's associated with a product or service. But since her name is "Derpy Hooves". I doubt theres any trademarked product or service named that.

Now of other countries copyright laws I'm not to sure of. But ya "Derp" isn't "Derpy Hooves". So legal jargon wise it doesn't seem like a problem, but obviously somewhere there is.

Sure it may have some connotations with mental disabilities to those who don't use it as lightly as others. However, her 'derpiness' just adds another level of cuteness which makes us love her more. No one's laughing at her but rather with her.

...I've never heard "Derpy" being used as ableist slang, I thought it meant something... silly. (Personally, I'm kinda for calling her "Ditzy Doo", but whatever.)

Stupid moral crusaders... stop trying to ruin things for everyone and let me watch my children's cartoon in peace!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that probably no one was really offended by Derpy. When you think about it, it makes a lot more sense that this was the work of anti-MLP trolls. They've done it before, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was their doing again.

I use the word "derp" in my daily language, as an expression of frustration whenever I make a mistake. I've also used "d'oh" and "Goddammit" in the same way.

People need to understand that words, especially ones with a relatively short life so far, do not possess inherent meanings. Without people to make them up and define them, words wouldn't even exist. "Derp" will take on whatever meaning we, as its users, give it.

Fun fact: the word "school" is derived from a Greek word meaning "leisure time spent pursuing knowledge." Last time I checked, school wasn't exactly leisurely, and rarely is it actually focused around pursuing knowledge.

sadly no matter how harmless the joke, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE will get offended no matter what you do. I do not find the therm "derp" offensive, it's describing more of a clumsy person, it's when you have those "derp" moments, where you do something really clumsy, not making fun or referencing handicapped people.

So Keep Derpy Derpy! I have signed this petition for a good cause, either they'll keep it and piss off a couple of conservative moms (have not heard "helicopter mom" before) or change it and piss off hundreds of thousands of fans, fans that basically made the character from the small background pony.
FYI: I've seen a lot of mentally handicapped people supporting Derpy, not being offended at all, and saying they can decide what they are offended at themselves.

I hope they keep it, for the fans sake, a couple of overly sensitive moms hopefully can't change something like that, the little girls don't care, the bronies disagree with the complaints, mentally handicapped people are not offended, I don't see how changing Derpy's name and appearance is going anywhere.

If it bothers you, just assume that Rainbow Dash was using an insulting nickname (Basically a less offensive "Careful, dumbass.")

Also this shirt is amazingly relevant.
Problem with that is that it seems Hasbro is keeping the name, which means I'd have to imagine everyone being insulting to that pony, which is a whole other can of weirdness.

Also, that's a pretty nice shirt.
