I played Resident Evil 2 for the first time in the middle of the night alone in the dark. It gave me some good jump scares for sure.

I had to take breaks playing the original Aliens vs Predator as a Marine because my nerves were on edge.

The Shalebridge Cradle level of Thief: Deadly Shadows was pretty scary. Nothing like sneaking down a hallway and seeing a light at the end of it start to flicker

Condemned: Criminal Origins and Silent Hill 2 are pretty much the only survival horror games I've played.

And I love both of them.

I have Silent Hill 4, it's just too fucking awkward.

I'm going to be a little obvious in some of these; but I think #1 will surprise quite a few.

5) Clock Tower 3.

The game could have ended after the first boss, and I would have been thrilled. The first boss makes such an impression, everything else was disappointing in comparasion

4) Medal of Honor Underground.

This game gets very creepy and quite graphic (well, as graphic as PS1 could go, at the time) the further into the game you go. It is an extremely long game, and after your done, you can play through as the female spy. I don't think my husband ever finished it. I loved watching him play just so I could follow the storyline. Dobermans that can shoot M-16's while you are trying to find a scientist's scattered remains is quite creepy indeed.

3) Silent Hill.

The original is still the most brutal. I seriously debated putting '2' in my list; but, quite frankly, it never scared me or creeped me out. its a wonderful psychological thriller and a fun game to play, but scary? Not so much. I think what puts 1 over all the SH titles is how unforgiving and how fragile human life is in the game.

2) Fatal Frame.

Yet again, the first is the best. You can't fight a ghost; but you can sure shutter them into oblivion with an archaic camera. The graphics are beautiful, the atmosphere is tight, and you always feel like you are probably missing something, but you don't know what until its too late. The storyline seems random; but as the nights pass (there are 4 levels to the game, you survive a level, you've made it through the night) you see how terrible and mysterious the mansion grounds are. I can't give this game enough praise.

1) Sanitarium.

This is probably a pretty obscure title to most, around 10+ years old, and sadly, I've not seen anyone make an updated version of it. It was a point and click PC game with a very in-depth storyline. It begins with an arrogant doctor who, while driving from the sanitarium he works at, crashes off of a rain-slicked road. When he comes to, his injuries have been tended to, but he finds he has been left alone with all the other criminally insane in the sanitarium. Through his dealings with the other characters, he finds just as much out about himself as he does the patients he is helping along the way. I wish like hell I knew how it ended, but my friend I was playing the game with moved and lost that, and a few other games in transit. It does fall under the label 'psychological thriller' like SH2; but unlike SH2, the game deals alot in the abstract and visually disturbing.

When I was young, my cousin brought over Resident Evil 2. The title screen had me scared.

Recently Amnesia: The Dark Descent is probably the scariest game I can think of. Lights off, surround sound speakers. I think I played for about 2 hours before having a mild heart attack

I have to say "Fatal Frame" is in the top list, if you let it take you by the hand and get immersed in the damn thing, you will get scared shittles

other than that, the very first Silent Hill really scared me a LOT :p but i think SH:2 was more scary

and just to finish it off, "IWBTG" IS the most frikken scary game i have ever played, seriously, tha shit that happens there is out of this world!! you´ve got to play it!!!.

Anyone remember the System Shock 2? Well that was the scariest, perhaps because I was so young. Penumbra and Amnesia were also pretty scary.

I don't place scary games at all so I avoid games like Silent Hill or Amnesia Dark Descent. I did however play Resident Evil 4 and that scare me when I first encounter the Regenerator (the sound they make is very creepy).

Silent Hill 4 is pretty scary, but it loses that scaryness when you realise that the ghosts are really frustrating.

A friend once told me that Max Payne was the scariest game he ever played??How? I played Max Payne 2, it?s not even a horror game. What the hell?

The scariest? Project Zero, no contest. I've played that game 3 times, and each time I quit about 10 minutes in due to sheer terror.

Other notable examples for me include Condemned 2, the 1997 version of Aliens Versus Predator (I couldn't see shit, OK?), and Fallout 3 wasn't scary but it was certainly pretty intimidating to me, because I was new to RPGs at the time.

It's been said already. But Amnesia. I deleted that game from my hard drive because on Steam I have this app that chooses a game at random. I was so scared that once it might pick that game so I had to delete it. If I had a physical copy I would of probably dug a hole and threw it in it.

For me it was Clive Barker's Undying. None of the newer ones have reached the same level of suspense. When you're being chased by a flayed, hook-and-chain wielding immortal ghost through a creepy mansion corridor, I almost shat my breeches.

Bioshock probubly counts for me.

The setting and the lighting helped keep me immersed into the atmosphere at al times, I found it nerve-racking in earlier parts when I had to face tougher foes, espcially the Big Daddies, and I always freak out in the parts where all the lights turn off and I move the analog stick like crazy in panic.

I especially panicked in the first scene where I was in that sub-pod thing (I forgot what it's called) And a Splicer saw me and tried to break into the sub-pod to kill me, until the security bots killed her.

It could be just because it was my first playthrough though and though out it I had a somewhat hard time with the combat system and had to think hard about every enemy encounter and hack every security cemera I find just to feel safe, heck, it was only by the time I got to the final boss fight that I got used to the combat system and managed to pull out the last of his Adam I think either before, or just after I ran out of first aid kits, and I was mainly using a crossbow on him.

Scariest ever? Don't really play many scary games so I guess System Shock, that game made you jump out of your skin at the slightest thing in the quiet early stages and you heaaring one of those mutants suddenly talking near really freaked me out.

BioShock wasn't THAT scary, just a bit sureal and gory.

Somebody mentioned AvP, I cerainly found that a bit jumpy, especially when I was an alien and you could get killed easily by a very noisey sentry gun and the resulting jump from the noise could send my mouse flying off my desk .....

Also tried that Exmortis 2 game as well in the thread, very creepy, have been playing for 15 minutes and has made me jump twice already
