Amnesia and Silent Hill 2 and 4 are the only games that have really scared me a lot. Silent Hill 1 had great moments (the two locker scares are just awesome), but for the most part it doesn't come close to those three. I haven't played Silent Hill 3 yet, but I'll assume that one's good too.

For what I played; Return to Castle Wolfenstein 3d scared the crap out of me when I was a kid.

Also, more recently. Amnesia. I often quit the game just to calm down for a bit.

Sure, a lot of the ones people have mentioned. Amnesia, Condemned, Theif 1/2, Silent Hill 1 & 2, STALKER (to a lesser extent Metro 2033) and parts of other games like Fallout, Half Life 2, etc...

But my personal favorite remains System Shock 2, for the creeps.

Entering the Ancestral Tombs in Morrowind, especially late at night. Not so much scary as unnerving when you hear all the whispering and mutterings.

ClockTower 3 (i think) when you hiding from the scissor man and he is searching for you. If he finds you......giant scissors in the face. Game Over.

Indeed. It took way too long for SS2 to have been mentioned. The sound of the God damn Psi Monkeys still give me the creeps, to say nothing of the Midwives It's the simple Hybrid's "Hurry...RUN!" that stays with me though.

AvP2. Marine campaign. That fucking motion tracker

Yeah I found that pretty scary too. But for some reason, the same campaign and motion tracker in AvP from 2010 was not scary at all.
That thing still haunts me to this day if i play that game.. just hearing the sound and finding out it was a cable.. T_T

Amnesia scared me pretty good. That was great. I played this one game called Scratches that scared me so much that at one point in the game it took a long time for me just open a door because I was certain something really scary would happen once I did...I like being scared in games! ^-^

You WILL shit your pants at 0:23. Keep some toilet paper handy.

If that isn't enough, watch this entire video without ever scrolling down or clicking ahead.

The girly screams scared me more than anything. I just don't see that as scary.
I'm sure it would be different if you were the one playing it. I was the same when I was watching my friend playing Condemned, didn't find it scary. After he handed me the pad however I was like "fuck this".

OT: First prize winner definitely goes to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I've been standing in a wardrobe on it for a good few months now.

EDIT: Oh and I know this isn't a game but I just want to link it anyway. http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=350217&no=20&weekday=tue scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.

For me, it's FEAR. But that's only because I play it on dark and stormy/creepy nights when I'm home alone. So it's honestly all my fault. I played it on a bright and shiny day and it didn't scare me at all. Never played amnesia though. Watched my friend play it and shriek and holler, it was hilarious. Especially when I gave him my noise canceling headphones and I snuck up behind him screamed and shook him. I swear to god that he shit himself a little, but he will never admit it

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, I went in to it expecting to be terrifying, so any little noise I heard I stopped and hid :D

This one guy said:
If I said Skyrim would I get lynched? Ok I know its not even meant to be in the genre you're all discussing but its pretty creepy when my mannequin is idling in the middle of the room. If a single smartass modder were to sneak in making them move after I put something on it I would probably flip in my chair.
Haha I can relate to that. I've still to see a house mod where the mannequins aren't bugged to shit. Every time I walk into Castle Grey the two mannequins in the hall are wandering about and as soon as I see them they snap in place at either side of the hall.

What sinister things could they be plotting while I am gone!?

SCP-87-B nearly made me crap myself. The game is about 15 minutes long yet it took me about 2 and a half hours to actually beat. Now that I know about SCP-Containment Breach I'm even more scared, especially since its by the same guy o.o

I would say overall I was scared more by Silent Hill 4 : The room than 2 and 3 combined.

Vampire the masquerade has several good jolts in it too, but its not a game trying to scare you. It just inadvertently does at times.
