So, what games are truly scary? i plan to find the best and then beat it, a few years back i had dead space, i played it for 5 minutes, (till the first save point) then quit, put it back on the shelf and only just finished it about a month and a half ago, my freinds, who know of this, thought it would be funny to get me dead space 2, haven't had chance to even install it yet as i've been busy with uni work, exams coming up and what not; but back to the point, what is the scariest game you've ever played, i intend to play it, and get my freinds off my back for good, it's plenty annoying having it mentioned whenever we talk about anything with even the most tenuous link to horror games / movies / books etc.

tldr; scariest game you've played or can think of

inb4 Amnesia.

But why does this topic come up every week or two? And why isn't Amnesia preemptively stated in the OP. It is the first game anybody mentions anyway. Well, there was Fatal Frame once, I think and/or maybe Silent Hill.

I'll just start collecting the replies in a text document then pasting them in the new threads.

Oh, alright.

The second scariest game I've played is Minecraft. Getting lost deep underground, with your last pick, not enough torches and no wood to replenish your supply... The randomly generated world makes it all the more scary, since the game has no concept of fairness or balance whatsoever and will let you wander around unpopulated caves for an hour before suddenly dropping 4 giant spiders and a creeper on you. Most games want you to have an entertaining and exciting experience, but Minecraft has this weird indifference to whether you live or die.

Amnesia: the Dark Descent wins by a mile though, although if A Machine for Pigs manages to be as weird, unsettling and freaky as its title then it should be very memorable.
