The title is pretty self-explanatory: what moments in games that aren't survival-horror scared you the most?

My personal picks are:

Gears of War: "Nightfall" just plain scared the shit out of me, especially when lights started flickering and I would have to haul ass to the next propane tank.

Limbo: The spider chase scene. If you've played the game, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Crysis 2: The opening. When you're floating in the water, the Marines feel something below them, and Alcatraz looks down to see... I almost shat myself at that part.

Minecraft...

"That's a nice everything you have there... Be a shame if something happened to it...~"

That should be a pretty good guess, as to what I'm talking about.

Halo CE, first encounter with the flood. At first I was like "gonna kill some covenant", but then I was like "Jesus Christ what the fuck is that"

Let's see if no one ninjas me on this.

I'm going to go ahead and say Minecraft though. Sometimes it's a dark cave with moaning, or a hiss whose source can not be located.

But usually it's the sound of a fuse and one big "Oh FUCK!" moment.

Bioshock counts as a non-horror game... right?

Hespith's rhyme from Dragon Age: Origins, which you hear over time while you're exploring the depths of an abandoned Dwarven city, which has now been overrun by Darkspawn. Seriously creepy.

"First day, they come and catch everyone.
Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hate it as she is violated.
Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she's become the beast."

Well, I remember the first time I encountered ReDeads in OoT. I was alone and these zombie like things are in this tomb, at the other end of the room was the sun song, I start along the path, trying my hand at killing these guys. All of a sudden it lets out a blood curdling shriek and starts advancing towards me, I don't know if its the game making me unable to respond or if its my own fear reacting to it. It keeps coming, I'm barely able to get a grip on myself, when all of a sudden, the creature gets its grip on me and begins its perverse feast. I am dead quickly there after, I make a vow to never enter that tomb again, I'd rather deal with the skeletal horde that appears constantly at night then deal with a handful of ReDeads. Sure, looking back, they aren't as scary and their attack can now be mocked quite easily, just start shouting "Rape!" and everyone will start laughing, but when I first encountered them, it took me months, maybe even a year, to overcome them fully.

Another example comes from the recent Fallout: New Vegas

When I went to Vault 22, plants covered everything, there is a stillness in the facility not really seen elsewhere in the game, creating quiet a disquieting atmosphere. In addition to said stillness and lack of visibility, due to ED-E's talents, I see enemy markers all over yet nothing from my own eyes or (as I call it) V.A.T.S. recon comes up with anything. When Raul goes off and kills something, the kill cam does not show anything. It was really creepy and I was freaking out the entire time. It was a really well done section.

Those goddamn dianogas in Star Wars: Dark Forces.

They might not look very scary here, but they were downright terrifying in-game. I particularly hated how they had a tendency to suddenly pop up right in your face, biting through a third of your health in a heartbeat.

I was only seven or eight when I played Dark Forces, and those bastards scarred me for life. Seriously, I'm an adult now that can shrug off zombies, the Flood and lots of other monstrous entities, yet I still have to skip Anoat Sewers because of the terrifying memories it brings back.

Shalebridge Cradle

Ravenholm

and oddly enough, Splinter Cell Chaos theory multiplayer as the mercenary. It was like a slasher movie if you had a good spy.

Ravenholm in Half-Life II comes to mind. It wasn't that scary, but I always dread that part of the game.

This. Shalebridge Cradle might just be the single most scary thing I've ever experienced in any game. But the developers also admited to trying to make it the scariest possible level they could.

Creepers still win, especially when I am in/around my house. I should feel safe there but I just fear a wall exploding on me randomly.

ReDeads in OoT.
