The scariest movie I can remember watching was one from the seventies or so called 'Don't be Afraid of the Dark'. It was about this young married couple that moved into a big, old house. Down in the basement, where the wife was going to have her office, they found a blocked up fireplace. The wife has the fireplace opened up. Soon after a bunch of little demons/monsters start coming up out of the fireplace trying to drag her down into their lair to make her their new queen. The creatures couldn't stand light, it was physically painful for them.

Anyway, I saw that movie when I was like 8 or 9 and it terrified me. I was afraid of the dark for years afterward. And, to this day, just the thought of the creepy voice the demons used unnerves me.

I've never seen a movie that scared me (outside my early childhood that is)

The original alien. Been only 8 (or 10... so long ago) at the time it was *hide behind cushions* scary. One of those experiences that kept me up for weeks.

Currently the scariest film for me isn't exactly a horror. Grave of the Fireflys gutted me and I found it more terrible then any slasher monster flick. Powerful film.

The Road had a similar impact on me, but not nearly as potent.

Horrors don't scare me any more. Films or games (I want survival horror back as a genre, not these imposter action adventures). All the CG in the world couldn't convince me the boogeyman is a real monster waiting around the corner to get me, and all the fake digital gore makes me think more of ketchup then the ol' "ketchup" they used to use (it wasn't ketchup, but its fun to think it was).

Even psychological horrors have become a bore. I enjoy horrors as a concept now, rather then a visceral experience.

Well when I was a kid Pet Sematary scared the crap out of me, but when I watch it now it's like how was I scared of this?

Not necessarily the scariest movie, but a scary movie that I enjoyed the most since I've been an adult has been The Ring. Pretty great movie there. I tend to like those creepy kinda movies instead of gore fests.

For the longest time Poltergeist has ranked as my #1 scary movie. I love Alien even more as a movie, but I didn't find it to be that scary. At 5 years old I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

As of two weeks ago though, I think Insidious takes my top spot. I didn't sleep at all the night that I saw it.

I haven't really ever seen a horror movie that has scared me. I heard good things about The Blaire Witch Project, but it just didn't do anything for me. People have told me Insidious is horrifying though so maybe that will be my first!

The fucking Poltergeist.... My god. I saw that when I was quite young and where I lived then we had a row of conifers at the back of the garden. For weeks afterwards I was absolutely convinced that at any moment one of the trees would smash through the window and try to grab me.

When I was younger, I was scared shitless by Child's Play.
I even had a dream that Chucky tried to kill me one time.
Just the thought of my toys coming alive and killing me....
This.

I had a really crappy babysitter who had me watch it when I was really small. To this day, I hate dolls.

Somehow, a few years later, my grandma got it in her head that I liked porcelain dolls, and kept buying them for me. They're all currently in a plastic tub in my basement, duct taped shut so they can't claw my eyes out in the night...
I know the feeling. My older cousin was the reason I saw it.
I had to throw my dolls in the closet so that I could get some sleep because I could swear that her head was going to turn and look at me.
Older Cousin who really liked horror movies and used to keep scarying you?
You and me both, mate. High Five!

As for the scariest movie I ever saw, I have to go with The Ring or The Exorcist, they are both pretty creepy.

I don't watch horror movies, but the scariest movie I saw was that shitty Doom film when I was about 10. I know. I saw it recently, and thought: "Well. It's shit. I guess the ending is alright, because of the FPS scene. But, meh. Just crap." By then I had played the games (the first 2) and liked them, so I thought, why not?

The scariest movie that is good that I saw was Jurassic Park, again I was about 10. Never really watched it again. Was planning to, got the book, read about 10 pages...and no. No. That baby! If you read it, you'll know.

My favorite movie that is scary may be the 1979 Russian Stalker movie. Amazing film. Only 2 scenes really disturbed me. One scene with some skeletons, and the tunnel scene. Go watch it.

The Blair Witch Project. One of the Few Scary Movies that is actually good.

Also, the Marble Hornet Series is pretty scary.

Either John Carpenter's The Thing, the original Halloween (also by Carpenter), or Jaws (the first time you see the shark is a pretty memorable moment).

I haven't been frightened by a movie in years.

The only one that comes to mind is the Ring, but that's pretty much because the DVD came with this special option in the Extras saying "Don't watch this..." and... well, I watched it and I immediately shut off the DVD Player because pressing stop wasn't fast enough.

The movie itself didn't frighten me -- not a moment was I terrified during the entire movie, but it sure as hell messed with my mind.
What did it show on the "dont watch this" button??
:O
Well, you basically watch what the victims watched on that accursed tape.

Needless to say, yeah, the movie messed with my freaking mind. What's funny is - as I said - I wasn't terrified during the movie, maybe enthralled by it, but never honestly terrified. That is until I clicked that stupid option in the Extras. Then I was terrified of it.

Se7en. Truly one of the most twisted films I've ever seen....

....unless you count some of the D-movies from the Syfy channel.

ALIEN.

If I could go back to any three times in history, one would be to shout "DUCK MR LINCOLN!"
One would be to shout "DUCK MR KENEDY!"
And one would be to record the first audiences reaction to that infamous scene in theater...

I mean that trailer was gold! It showed you nothing to wet your intrest, then it gave you a movie bursting at the seams with horror.

EDIT: Aww.. emmbedding isn't working... all well.

Jacob's Ladder was very psychologically frightening, as well as having several creepy undertones lingering around the story. Also, it happens to be my favourite movie of all time.

When I was younger, I was very frightened by a film called Darkness. While the movie wasn't that great in general, it was pretty damn creepy to watch.

Then there is Misery. It was pretty terrifying, as you never really knew when the villain could become completely psychotic and not.

Also, R-Point was pretty disturbing...

The Poltergeist is definitely up there. If you've seen it...you know what scene I'm talking about.Man I jumped almost out of my seat! I was younger though. I haven't really been scared in awhile, since I watch a LOT of scary horror movies. The game Amnesia scared me.

Unnerving, however, I would basically add anything by the director Takashi Miike. I don't know where he imagine's his torture scenes up, but it makes Hostel and Saw seem weak. It has made me physically cringe and turn away. They aren't the whole movie, like Saw and Hostel though, just a part of his MindFUUU movies.
