Okay, I searched for this, but couldn't see anything recent that was asking this particular question. :)

So here's the problem:
I can't find a horror movie that is actually able to scare me and I would really like to be scared for once.

So I ask you, can you think of any movies that absolutely terrified you?
I would like more recent ones if at all possible, because they would be easier to get a hold of. Also I'd prefer sudden frights rather than psychological horror, but I'll watch both kinds as long as it's really scary. :)

Thanks in advance. ^.^

Edit:
I was told it would be a good idea to outline what I haven't found scary. So without further adue:

30 Days of Night
The Grudge
The Ring (both of them)
Scream
Shutter (the remake)
Diary of the Dead
The Devil's Backbone (though it was brilliant)
My Bloody Valentine
Final Destination
Altered
The Blair Witch Project
The Hills Have Eyes
Ghost Ship
1408
The Orphanage

I can list more if need be. :)

I'm in the same boat at the minute.

Personally I'd recommend Alien, the first one for a good scare. One of the only films I have been even a little frightened of.

I personally don't have any to suggest (sorry...) but I think it'd help a lot of people if you outlined what isn't scary so we know where the bar is.

I still think The Shining is really scary, but only if you watch it alone in the dark.

You mean not everyone has seen it yet?

what is wrong with these people!?
Well to be fair it was probably before my time. xD

When was it made?

Oh yeah, good idea.

I'll get right to it. :)

Anything where the director basically goes "BOOO!" and makes something jump up on screen for me (which incidentally happens to be every horror film of the last 15 years). That's not scaring me. That's just giving me a shock. Like kicking me in the nuts or putting electricity in my cereal.

Well, if you want your psychological pants scared off, I high recommend "Rinne" (translated into "Reincarnation" in English.)

It's an independent Japanese horror film. It actually never got a theatrical release in the U.S. because it's content was considered "too graphic."

No excuses! That is beside the point!

And 1979. It was 10 years before I was born and I've watched it.

The Descent. But the UK version only, not the US version. They softened up the ending and ruined it.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Alien.

Or you could go for Twin Peaks. Scariest TV show I've ever seen.

Perfect Blue. Don't watch unless you like having your mind f*cked in the *ss.

I'm also surprised no one's said Audition. It's a J-Horror that was ranked the 7th scariest movie of all time (can't remember the poll, but it was on the DVD extras).

Is it just me, or was The Blair Witch Project scary.
Not really.
I didn't think it achieved the sense of isolation that it was trying to.
Well, for me at least.
