Scary movies that are actually scary.

The Thing. Actually made me piss my pants when I was four. Just saw it again last week, and had nightmares. I haven't had nightmares in twelve years.

I registered for an account just so I could post here and laud this movie (and also because The Escapist is awesome and anyone who thinks differently should feel bad).

A movie that really got to me was Pandorum, and not just because I love Dennis Quaid (Incidentally, check out Enemy Mine. The special effects are truly horrific). I don't think scared is the right word for how it made me feel overall though.

I don't get scared by movies very easily, and Pandorum managed to do it exactly once, which is more than I can say of every other horror movie I've seen since I was twelve. In fact, I can safely say I did not even know I was watching a horror movie until I got scared. I only had a vague feeling that something was wrong. Very wrong. Dead Space wrong, without being blindingly obvious.

The Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage and parts of Pan's Labyrinth are genuinely terrifying. In case you didn't notice, I'm a fan of Guillermo del Toro
"The Devil's Backbone" startled me when it came on IFC a few years ago. "Pan's Labyrinth" was frightening in that the danger of fantasy and the terror of reality came together. One of my favorite films, almost perfect in everyway.

Other than that, "Alien" and "Aliens" were probably the only real sci-fi horrors that truly scared me. "The Thing" (modern remake) was okay, "Paranormal Activity" was over hyped since demonic hauntings/possessions are common in modern cinema. No haunting films other than "The Others" and "Ju-On" (The Ring) have had much impact.

"Dog Soldiers" and "Silver Bullet" are good werewolf flicks with plenty of scares.

"Silent Hill" had good atmosphere, but is of course inferior to the source material in the game.

"An American Haunting" was the disappointment, the most famous haunting in American history that has never been explained, and they ruin it with cheap thrills, bad directing, hurried/dodgy plot

I thought 1408 was brilliant, call me silly but I thought it was rather unique and it was scary in its own subtle way, as soon as I started the film, I was hooked, the obvious pain and mental trauma Enslin suffers makes the film that much more engrossing. Plus John Cusack did a great job as Mike Enslin. (I'm aware that it was a short story by Stephen King)

The only movie that me and my mates watched that actually got us glued to our seats in fear and admosphere was "Where Eagles Dare". It's an old war movie, sort of espionage. But really well done. It doesn't rely on shouting monster or just tons of gore. It's pure admosphere of undercover agents in a castle full of germans while one of them is a traitor.

A very good cat and mouse movie.

Ah yes, I was reading about it briefly.
I'm glad that they didn't decide to remake it, again. But then on the other hand, the idea of a prequel scares me as they might not do John Carpenter's remake justice.

Check that out, it was a surprisingly good addition to the storyline.

Played the game at a friends house for a few minutes and liked it but can't seem to find a copy because I don't buy games off the web.

As a kid, the film 'Jeepers Creepers' horrified me. I would literally look over my shoulder and try not to make any noise if I was alone. Looking back, it's still a creepy ass movie, but not as scary as when I was a kid.
Jeepers Creepers was also quite scary for me when I was younger. It's still one of my favourite movies despite not being scary to me anymore.

Ahk, well, if you see it around, I suggest picking it up. For an older game it has some great set pieces, and a terrific atmosphere.

to be completely honest, I feel that the "Paranormal Activity" movies to be authentically scary in their own way. they are psychological horrors, which to me are far more affective.
That one really didn't scare me in theaters (the end was pretty tense) but I kept coming back to it later when I was alone in dark rooms...
Well, almost the same for me. I laughed out loud in the cinema at the people screaming, but later on I suddenly found myself noticing more sounds in my bedroom. Well played.

Other horror movies don't really do anything for me. But with Paranormal Activity I can give you this guarantee: Guys out there, watch this one with a girl. Chances are that she won't want to sleep alone that night...

A l'interieur (Inside)

Amazing French horror in the same vein as the original Halloween. A pregnant woman is terrorised by a strange woman during the Paris riots. Tense, brutal and comes highly recommended from myself.

The Descent

One of the best (maybe even the best) horrors of the last decade, in terms of pure scare value.

Session 9

Great psychological horror with one of the best filming locations ever. The old abandoned Danvers State Mental Hospital. It was the inspiration for the original Arkham, which went on to inspire the original Arkham Asylum. It also inspired a section of Painkiller for game trivia fans.
