Wow, money isn't enough, now they want to jail people for 10 years? And if they want to make virtual and literal crimes equal, why are the punishments for virtual crimes so much higher? Think what you will of downloading, but this is out of control, isn't it?

England, just the same.
Just because.
Clearly you didn't read the articles. "Antipiracy group pushes 10 years jail time for UK infringers"

The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) is targeting the UK with these laws.

I'm afraid both of your nations have signed international copyright treaties that recognize these folk's right to prosecute you in America and vice-versa.

Anyways, it's dick but when a countries principle economic export is intellectual property I'm hardly surprised they're getting militant about it.

Plus, I'm not a pirate, in any sense of the word, and as such shall point and laugh at all pirates, regardless of nationality.

I'm sure they are all torn up about your pointing and laughing. Are you pointing with one hand and sucking the thumb of your other? I couldn't help myself. I really did imagine a child on a playground.

The title of one of those links is "Anti-P2P Group: 'Online Piracy Must Equal Physical Piracy'"

The problem I have, is that they don't equal out. Digital piracy is not at all equal to walking into a store and taking a video game off of the shelf.

For instance, according to Merriam-Webster "Theft" can be defined as, "the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it"

There is no deprivation of property. Not that that excuses the crime, but certainly this should be taken into account when setting up laws, no?

It is impossible to laugh effectively and have one's thumb in one's mouth at the same time.

And please, tone down the superiority complex a tad.

How is that a superiority complex?

And it's actually not impossible to laugh and have your thumb in your mouth. I have no idea what made you think it was.

If this trend continues, soon online piracy will be punishable by hanging...just like piracy was a few hundred years ago...Gyar!

And to the above post, to hell with jail time. Just the paying for the game or whatever and court costs are good enough. That way jails can hold people for something meaningful. (Note: None of what I type is meant to insult or belittle anything you say, I just do not think stealing a single game, song, or whatever is really worth jail time unless it is not the first time one has done this).

i said it before and i'll say it again. GOOD. the fewer pirates we have the more people can make a living doing artistic things. Deterrants for the win

Life may get a bit more confining if the good old UK. If these laws pass over the pond I suppose some asshat here in the USA will look and say "Well well, look at what we have here. Let's try to do the same thing!". It is only a matter of time. I am damn glad we have the ACLU and the EFF. If I believed in some god I would bless both organizations.

ACLU... theyre still around? i thought they were all killed a few years back... but anyway, if they DO still exist theyre gunna have their hands full dealing with the aftermath of the bush administration, torture and all that, they probably wont have much time for video games law.
EFF... yeah... they use logic dont they? US legal system has 35% reflect for logic damage 98% immunity, and a 50% absorb, all constant effects. its very simple, the bad guys win. they ALWAYS win. sometimes the less-bad bad guys win, but thats not much of a consolation.

at least we can find solace in the fact that police just barely know how to use computers and dont enforce laws anyway.

I agree; it's one thing to 'get your due' but this is outrageous. Don't they realize that once they sue everyone, *everyone* won't be able to pay, and then their art will be for naught?

I wish art was a hobby and not a career/cash cow.

i'm not exactly thrilled, but come on. i mean instruments cost like 3000 au! and amps, cables, sticks, picks, microphones, studio rental, recording engineer, tour manager, tour organiser, booking agents, travel, cover art, all of this has been factored into the price of a band. and if you're complaining that you dont have 10 bucks for a cd that cost someone thousands of dollars in shelf stacking money, you and i will have words

And here I thought there was an overcrowding issue with prisons. Guess not, considering they're sentencing people 10 years for what they have claimed to be the equivalent of shoplifting.
