I rarely go to dances at my high school, and all the ones I've been to were rather uninteresting.

Except for Sadie Hawkins my freshman year, which had a nerd theme for some reason. Two of my friends dressed in Steve Urkel-esque gear, and went into the middle of the dance floor and pretty much did this.

It was actually quite glorious.

I went to one once for about 2 hours. I sat in a backroom and played SMB Brawl co-op with one of my friends whilst partaking in carbonated beverages. No dancing was involved whatsoever. Still had a great time though.

the first one i got high, mocked my ex in front of her friends to her face and humiliated her (she cheated on me with 6 different people at a party, and was in the process of trying to win me back, it did not work). it was ok i guess, not fantastic mind.

second one was worse, i saw i load of people i hate, and ended up just having an eating competition with roasted pork burgers with my best friend, and then we just both felt very ill.

overall, you're not missing much IMO.

I only ever 'went' to one (this is the UK, so most schools don't really have them except for 13th grade... or something, well, that was the way my school was).

It was the last time everyone in the class was going to be in the same place so I turned up to say my farewells/good lucks/best wishes and all that mush, before promptly leaving. My gf (went to a different school) was even more unsocial than me so it suited us both just fine.

I went to a few back in my high school days. They weren't exactly "best night EVARR" material, but they were decent for the most part. I'm a terrible dancer and the music selection was often atrocious (can hip-hop just die already?), so I spent most of the time socializing with the same group of friends that I normally hung out with.

Senior prom was somewhat of a letdown. The school promised us all sorts of things that they didn't deliver on when the time came. We were told that there would be a varied musical selection, a full banquet feast, and formal announcements for arriving couples. Instead we got 95% hip-hop music, a bare bones snack bar and a decidedly unceremonious breathalyzer test.

My schools havee had annual new-year's dances from 6th grade to today.
I skipped the first one since I'd heard it sucked, but went to the second one (it sucked).
I can't remember much of the following three years. Each dance started out formal, but that was thrown away after the opening ceremony.
All I remember from those is that the music was awful, I danced with noone, was bored, and ate some chocolate bars. And there was this one kid that was rather drunk.

Then there's the 11th grade dance. We went to a club/cafe called Ricks cafe. I had to stand in a really bloody cramped "line" (it was actually just a mass of people working their way to the wardrobes.) for 15-30 minutes before I could hang my jacket away.
Then I went downstairs into the "party basement" where some random dj played music so loud it was impossible to speak to people.
This place was also bloody cramped.
The vorspiel was relatively nice though.

That's why I skipped the dance last year.

I would go to dances just for the hell of it. I was fairly awkward at first. I never went to prom (though I always promised myself I would hit every afterparty, which I invariably did). However, I eventually took ballroom dance lessons and learned how some of the various styles of hiphop dance. Then I just started making people look bad. And then I became a dance instructor. Whoo.
