Science Cheerleaders: Probably Hotter And Smarter Than You

If you never felt your life was inadequate before, now might be a good time to start.

There are probably more than a few people in this world who look at professional cheerleaders at sporting events and assume they're nothing more than airheaded eye candy. Oh sure, they might look good while they're cheering on (Local Sports Team X), and it probably takes a bit of training to be able to do all those splits, but that's all they're really capable of, isn't it?

No, it isn't.

Meet the Science Cheerleaders. They're not only current and former professional cheerleaders with the NBA and NFL, they're also scientists and engineers who want to encourage young girls to dream about entering what is a very male-dominated industry. In the video here, they're cheering at the USA Science and Engineering Festival held last month in Washington, D.C.

The video starts off seeming a bit silly. "Oh, it's professional cheerleaders cheering for science," you might say, "That's kind of endearing." Then you meet the Houston Texans cheerleader with an aerospace degree working for NASA. Then you meet the Washington Redskins cheerleader who has done pretty much everything.

If there's any one video to make you feel inadequate about your life's work, this is it. I mean holy crap, I just sit at a desk and write about videogames on the internet, geez.

In all seriousness, while the video does get rather cheesy at times, this is a seriously cool way of breaking down common and all-too-harmful gender stereotypes. You go, girls.

what a great initiative, with all the girls looking up to cheerleaders and wanting to be like them its awesome that some of the professionals go out and promote knowledge, though getting a doctor degree might be a bit much, why not start out slow with some cheerleaders who have gone to college and now have a respectable and high status in a large firm.

If only more girls were interested in such things. We've got a lot of cultural programming to rewrite. More power to these women.

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they speak and these women do really sound intelligent.

Seriously? I mean, you're entitled to your own opinion and all that, but seriously?

I still feel quite adequate, Mr Funk.

Maybe that's because cheerleading is quite unknown in Germany, so I can't fully appreciate it?

Well, my life is worthless. If anyone needs me, I'll be on the couch with a tub of ice cream.

Don't wait up.

See! Nerds can be hot too!!!
Which is what I've been trying to tell everyone since 2004 (when I started liking girls in a "more than friends" kinda way).

It's good but I can really feel the cheesiness shine through, although it does show that cheerleaders don't have to be stupid, or any more stereotyped than anybody should be.

Hmm that's pretty cool. I used to work with a CFL cheerleader. Wait, I worked 2 different jobs with 2 different CFL cheerleaders. First one was a redhead, hot, pretty smart (tho no doctor!) and the other was blond, hot, and fairly dumb. Hm....

I don't get it. Why would you cheer for science? Science is a field of knowledge, it doesn't care whether it gets praised or not.

Hmm, Maybe it's a United Statesian thing.

Oh, and I don't feel less adequate because some average looking ladies who also happen to be successful/smart likes to dance in a certain way.

Applied science doesn't really mean shit to most of my fellow Americans, and we really do need more emphasis on solving several real, measurable problems.

Ironically enough (to me), there are far more female Meteorology Majors enrolled now than even two years ago (proportionally). So sayeth our department.
