Science Says Pro Gamers Aren't Athletes

Of course, they're not athletes! They sit in front of a computer all day! It's so obvious it's ridiculous. Now, what really worries me is the reasoning behind this study. We know this already, so that can only mean one thing. There are people out there who think professional gamers are athletes in peak physical condition.

but to contribute something, here is "proof" that darts is not much of a sport either.

"And it's... a Double vodka... a very good start"

That sketch almost single-handedly was responsible for darts losing all credibility in the UK.

bottom line: if it's a game JUST CALL IT A GAME! No reason to call it a sport, only thing distinguishing sports from games (like chess) is the physical aspect.
It's always pissed me off how the best scoring spot on a dartboard is NOT the bullseye, seriously, who the fuck decided that!?

science has nothing to do right now.. so in their free time science just mess around...
You mean other than getting me flying cars and working on FTL travel?
they already have it, they must first sell their old stocks before starting to sell new technologies.

WAIT So this guy they surveyed ONLY spent 10 hours a day at a computer and was in worse shape than me? That guy is just a bad example.

Which is why all gamers need to get some activity and exercise in that doesn't involve them sitting in a chair. I think that's the real thing that should be taught, not that gaming is bad. Instead of blaming it on gaming, just try to make people more health conscious. Twenty minutes of cardio can vastly improve a lot of health factors.

EDIT: Just wait until professional WiiFit gets going. Then it'll be a sport!

If scientists didn't waste time proving obvious shit, we'd still be thinking that the sun revolved around the earth.

Food for thought.

This is made worse for me since I have a bad lung.

Gaming = fun + bad for me.
This is the last of those avatars I'm seeing, I'm leaving this site for a few weeks or until this thing blows over. Goodbye Escapist...
It blew over. It was just a one day thing.

Thats lovely :)

But did anyone really think anything else than it being unhealthy to spend 10 hours a day at your PC?
Well bear in mind that a lot of the population does it for 8 hours at work and then TV time at home. The results of the study are interesting in other fields like general computer use. It's also interesting for judging the merit of gaming as a 'lifestyle', it looks like everyone's going "well duh, gaming isn't sport" but I doubt people expected it to be THAT bad for you.

Science reports on here are like the Daily Mail, we just like to complain about shit.
Huh, never thought of it that way, people who work at a computer should perhaps consider that. I don't work at a computer, and excercise almost everyday. But thats actually a good point.

And maybe the radio program could pay for a study on cancer instead of a basically throwing all that money away? :)
Besides, just because a study confirms your suspicions and makes sense doesn't mean that it was a pointless study. Studies can come up with counter-intuitive results at times, and it's worth studying what we consider to be common knowledge rather than just assuming we're always correct. Scientifically supported data > common personal belief.
Yeah, you're right. Didn't think about that...

I believe Korea has some sharp words for you, article.

But, seriously, I think I might have taken this as a challenge. Time to get in shape and get some new video games. Push ups and robot unicorn attack, here I come!!!
I don't think Korea, a nation where people have made the news by playing games until they DIE in an easily avoidable manner, has any words with merit here. While gaming can be shoe-horned into the loose literal definition of sport (an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. It is governed by a set of rules or customs) to try and assert that these people are athletes based on an equally loose literal definition (a person trained to compete in sports) would be folly at best. There are likely SOME dedicated gamers who are also athletic, but I would be willing to wager their athletic prowess was not the result of dedicated video game practice and instead probably was the result of physical exertion.

Of course, I don't think the average person would ever make the mistake of confusing your average video gamer with an athlete. That a study would be needed to confirm or deny this is silly at best, given the simple fact that anyone who would believe otherwise is probably not going to be convinced by science when staring reality in the face isn't doing the trick.

So y is Chess considered a sport? and therefore are pro chess players athletes?

we need to redefine our words here... its not that what they found out was wrong, its just the english language fails to properly define the terms used me thinks :D

English may not define it well but as said above Greek sure as hell does. Given that the word is a direct romanization of the Greek form rather then being descended from it I figure its fair to use that definition?
Athletes must be ppl who whom play physically challenging sports not just any sport? i think that would solve a bit of the misunderstanding :D

can someone explain to me how this is news to anyone? whats next? a study to evaluate the effects of poking a lion with a stick?
I actually tested that myself. We became good friends afterwards, even if it cost me my arm and cost him his eye.
