As of today, July 7 2009, the SciFi channel is now known as SyFy. This channel is famous for showing low budget horror movies. What is your take on the name change? refreshing name change or unnecessary attempt to be 'hip' or did you even care about the station in the first place?

Its makes absolutely no difference to me or to most people I would have thought... I doubt anyone is going to become distressed at having to realize their favorite TV channel goes by a different name.

You would have thought being called SciFi (SyFy) is would be showing SciFi movies.

Anyway, it doesn't make much difference to me as I've never watched it or even heard of it before now.

Lots of channels are changing their names to become cool. Like most UKTV Channels, they've all changed names in the past year.

SciFi (or SyFy) will never be hip because it's target audience is SciFi fans (I am in this group of people before you slate me for that statement) and people who enjoy low budget shitty films (like me) so who knows why they changed the name.

You just answered your own question. They changed the name to try and drop the "nerd" image, and thus appeal to a larger market, without completely abandoning the audience that's kept them in business for all these years. It's a stupid idea, in my opinion. People who didn't watch the SciFi channel aren't suddenly going to flock to it now that it's called SyFy. If you didn't want to watch Eureka and Battlestar Galactica before, they're not going to intrigue you now.

Stop appearing nerdy who the hell are they kidding? The minute you dedicate a section to old badly dubbed anime or early b-movie horrors im sorry you loose the cool test.

I am moraly opposed to the whole thing. How DARE they change the name of a channel I never watch. Why don't they just kick God in the balls while they're at it.

the only reason I ever watched SciFi was for the original twilight zone episodes, and thats all I'm ever going to watch it for.

A ripoff of my nickname TyFi, through and through. There's no other way that this could have happened.

I don't know how long they've been airing WWE, but I suppose that lends credence to the change.

Retarded shit.

Ugh, they just want to look hip and cool. They're not hip and cool, they should embrace their nerdyness. Instead we get this desperate attempt. As long as it isn't an omen for things to come, I don't care so much. Doesn't make it less stupid though.

This reminds me of a Penny Arcade strip...

SciFi sounds better than Syfy in my opinion.
