I may be seriously late to the party on this one, but I realized something about Scott Pilgrim VS The World, and that is that video games play no part in the story at all. All of the retro video games stuff is only occurring in Scott's mind when he is around or thinking about Ramona. At the start of the movie ( I'll be referencing the movie for this since I unfortunately never read the graphic novel. ) but at the start of the movie, when Scott is hanging out with Knives and the band, nothing video game-y happens at all. Every fight scene and video game reference occurs when Scott is fighting an Evil Ex for Ramona or just being with her. In fact, I don't even think an actual fight ever happened for real. It was all just how Scott's mind processed the emotional struggles of dealing with Ramona's past and getting through all the generic relationship issues that everyone has to go through.

Trust me, your not the only late one. I just watch the movie about 7 days ago and I absolutely love everything about it now. I have a desktop wallpaper of it, trying to read the original comics for it, have music from the soundtrack, and am hoping to buy it as soon as it come to DVD. I've never been a comic book person and have always preferred mangas but this movie changed my mind about comics.

Um, I don't think it's meant to be looked into that much.

I mean it's one of my favourite movies, definitely, however I don't see it like you do. I just feel that those special effects were just there because they were there, if they make sense.

The video game effects aren't meant to be a metaphor for Scott's relationship issues.

That's just my opinion though :)

Why do we have to simplify something as awesome as Scott Pilgrim to this? I'd rather enjoy the idea of a world where people can travel through dreams and punch holes in the moon because they're vegan. Anyway many times in the film we see people respond to what's going on with disbelief.

Realism be damned I say!

You must have missed things like the "Pee Meter" - the video game elements are a metaphor for how Scott perceives his entire life, not just his relationship with Ramona. Also "epiphany" is spelled wrong in your thread title.

Its possible. The comic sort of implies the same thing, or at least that the fights DO happen, but Scott's imagination and personal issues blow them way out of proportion.

The movie unfortunately glosses over an important part of the story in the comic, namely that Scott absolutely refuses to take responsibility for anything he does (this is the reason Kim is such a jerk to him). This was the whole point of "Nega-Scott", the manifestation of Scott's desire to keep fighting and running away from his problems, rather than simply accepting the blame and acknowledging he was wrong.

Game references and ideas were used stylistically, and provide a metaphor for Scott's life. However, it wasn't all in his head. You're reading into it far too much.

MovieBob said it best, but I'll just paraphrase him since I cannot be be bothered to dig up the actual quote, but I believe the video game references are meant to be seen in the way Scott would place his emotional struggle into context. So the fights we just metaphors with the emotional turmoil he felt. Does the fact that the fights are metaphorical detract anything away from the greatness of the film? Not one bit.

the style of the comic book is very simular to manga as far as the format of the pannels, you'd probably enjoy it :)

The movie and the comic pretty much sums up the undercurrent of our generation. Many charactors can be found amongest those you know; the smug girl at the starbucks giving away advice, The Struggling Indie Band, the sweet high schooler learning what it is to grow up, and of course Scott Pilgrim the very deffiniton of todays youth haphazardly and indirectly trying to find there place in this exisitance. (just to name a couple)

So yeah The Gamer stuff is just one more way this world connects ot ours through the familar.

If you read the books you'd know that they did all happen since it's mentioned that Scott is the best fighter in all of Toronto. So it's not some crazy metaphor. It all happened. But you should totally read the books, they make way more sense of everything, including Scott's past.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the writer said something along the lines of this is a world where people have various powers, Scott's is kung fu, people randomly break into these kinds of fights, deal with it.

It did sound like a lot of people enjoyed them. I hope I'll be able to find them somewhere at some book store. Barnes and Noble might have it but I don't usually see comic books in there.

I liked that part in the movie with the Legend of Zelda fairy fountain music. That was a nice touch that my girlfriend didn't understand, but I laughed my ass off at.
