Okay, so I was playing Assassin's Creed 2 earlier today when suddenly a message popped up, saying the disk was unreadable and that I had to clean it and restart the console. Now, I have an Xbox 360, and I've had a fair amount of bad luck with this game. Brilliant game, but I had it for Christmas last year and before I could play it my Xbox was stolen. I've only recently had a replacement from the insurance, and now I can't get any of the DLC or anything because I don't have a network adapter or a hard drive anymore. And now, just as I reach Forli, this happens.

Well, I took the disk out to clean it and there is a single scratch, a circle right around the outer edge of the disk. When I checked the Xbox support page online, because it isn't published by Microsoft they won't replace it for me. So I need to either spend about £30 on a new copy of the game, or get the disk repaired.

So the question is, does anyone know any cheap places in the UK to get a scratched disk repaired? How much would it cost to get it done at either Game or Gamestation? And are there any solutions I could try at home cheaply instead, that actually work, since I don't have a disk repair kit myself?

I've tried the toothpaste thing several times, and that didn't work for my beloved Fable...

Just a heads up.

I think Blockbuster or other rental stores have some kind of scratch repair service that lets you fix this problem relatively cheaply. At least they did last year when Watchdog did a report on the Xbox scratching discs.

Well I've always been fairly careful and lucky with discs, so rarely do I have this problem, but you can pick up liquid and proper clothes etc anywhere.. I think I got mine at Blockbuster for some reason. Or they can even do it there I seem to remember, for something like £5 or £10.

That's probably your best bet. Otherwise, buy a decent 2nd hand copy if you don't wanna dish out another £40.

Best I can help with. But yeah- Any store that sells discs/games will or usually/should have disc repairs in store, for relatively cheap. Blockbuster was just the first in my head.

Any idea how much that would cost?

At high-street stationers like WHSmiths they sell scratch repair kits for home use, and they cost about £10.

Last year it was a pound. I don't know if it has gone up since then though.

Might be, but I reckon I'll just play other games for now and if I have any more scratched disks then I'll get in touch with Microsoft and get it sorted out. A loss of £5-£10 is acceptable if it means I don't have to spend loads more getting my Xbox replaced again, especially since this is my third console (1st RRoDed, replacement from MS was stolen, this one is the next replacement from the insurance company).

Okay, I'll browse a few loacl places and see if the prices are still that low, and hopefully I'll have it running again by Monday :D

Check the last page of your instruction manual.

I know a lot of the games I own, you send the scratched disc to the publisher (EA, for example) and something like $5 and they'll send you a new disc of that game.

It would vary between publishers, but I think most if not all would have a similar system.

The same happened for me the very same day i got red dead redemption

I took my disc to game and paid £5 to have the disc repaired 3 times, it took about 1/2 hr in total and the game worked perfectly afterwards

pfft. If that was me I woulda just took the game back and complained that it didn't work.

I did it with Fallout 3 with gamestation when I bought a new game. Came home and it was scratched to fuck. Took it back and bought it around the corner pre-owned and in better condition for a tenner
