What gives?
I can understand clapping, it's the vary basis of many people showing their approval all at once
I can understand whistling, since it's a loud noise that shows happiness
I can understand shouting "yeah!" or even the good ol' "WOOOOooooo!" because it's a noise of approval
But screaming? Screaming says "danger, I'm being attacked!" or "argh, scary thing!" to me. Screaming is less "What you just did was great" and more "People need to look at me" for whatever reason (usually the aforementioned 'I'm in danger' scenario)
Girls are basically the only culprits here. I'm not saying I'm confusing a girl's higher-pitching wooting with screaming, I mean THIS
Now, obviously, that's the infamous Beatlemania. Nothing has really been that insane before or since, but it's the extreme end of a common problem.
I just don't understand it. With the Beatles, I could understand that these girls are just SO insanely happy to be there (though again I'd question why screaming, a warning noise, is what they use) but with your average concert where it's not that big a deal, I don't get why people (read: the girls) scream.
Part of me feels like it's "Wow, these guys/gals are really good, but I want people to look at ME too!"
