What gives?

I can understand clapping, it's the vary basis of many people showing their approval all at once

I can understand whistling, since it's a loud noise that shows happiness

I can understand shouting "yeah!" or even the good ol' "WOOOOooooo!" because it's a noise of approval

But screaming? Screaming says "danger, I'm being attacked!" or "argh, scary thing!" to me. Screaming is less "What you just did was great" and more "People need to look at me" for whatever reason (usually the aforementioned 'I'm in danger' scenario)

Girls are basically the only culprits here. I'm not saying I'm confusing a girl's higher-pitching wooting with screaming, I mean THIS

Now, obviously, that's the infamous Beatlemania. Nothing has really been that insane before or since, but it's the extreme end of a common problem.

I just don't understand it. With the Beatles, I could understand that these girls are just SO insanely happy to be there (though again I'd question why screaming, a warning noise, is what they use) but with your average concert where it's not that big a deal, I don't get why people (read: the girls) scream.

Part of me feels like it's "Wow, these guys/gals are really good, but I want people to look at ME too!"

Your thoughts?

Yea, I agree, the scream do tend to be annoying, but also that they happen to be essentialy the most noticeable sound heard during those parts, so it could easily be an attention seeking thing, directed at the performers of course.

EDIT: essetentialy I think a crowd mentality is that the loudest fan is the biggest fan which would probably also cause those screams.

Clearly, you have never been to a Maiden concert =3. Screaming or roaring is the very essence of live music, rock on ^^.

Ah yes, the rage + passion theory

That doesn't work with less 'heavy' genres. Having said that, noone screams in Jazz. Interesting

Rock on!

Same things still happens today. It's SO much easier thinking of these girls as animals than human beings. This video sparked some funny zombie/left 4 dead mashups because of the crazed actions of so many.

Edit: and before anyone calls me out on being chauvinistic, just watch the video and tell me with a straight face that you think anyone should be allowed to act like that and remain a part of a functioning society. I'm not disturbed by the fact that they are girls but because we as a culture should be beyond that kind of illogical hysteria. This is a celebrity sighting, not an earthquake/tsunami/atomic bomb.
