Screw you, suggested videos! (Youtube)

Time for a "first world problems" rant!

Youtube's "Suggested Videos" sidebar is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, I've run across some awesome channels with it. On the other hand, it can be annoying to the point that it's ultimately counter-productive.

A while ago I checked out some Mario Kart 8 videos. Nothing unusual, just a few replays and reviews. Soon afterwards I started getting a certain animation titled "Racist Mario" in the sidebar. The thumbnail depicts a seriously pissed Mario gritting his teeth and glaring at the viewer while a topless Princess Peach stands behind him with a ditzy expression. Frankly it looked stupid, so I ignored it, figuring it would go away in a day or two.

Fast forward a few months and the ************ DIDN'T. GO. AWAY.

Seriously, the damn thing showed up everywhere, no matter what I watched. My annoyance grew bit by bit until my expression matched Mario's whenever it popped up. I suppose I could have caved and clicked, but I refused to out of principle and stubbornness. I wanted to outlast it, to prove that I as a mere mortal could stand up to Youtube's algorithms and prevail. In the end though, it was too much. I went with the nuclear option today and blocked the channel, which is pretty much the opposite effect that the feature was designed for. Is it to much to ask for a simple "Remove suggested video" option for such things?![footnote]I have a horrible feeling that the first thing I'll do in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will be beating the everloving shit out of a level 1 CPU Mario. I'll feel better but man, that poor CPU won't deserve it.[/footnote]

What are some suggested videos for you that wouldn't stop stalking you?

Captcha: "yeah right"

Obviously Captcha doesn't frequent Youtube.

Well, it's not a suggested video, but every time I upload one, "Carrie Underwood", "Carrie" and "Underwood" are suggested tags. It doesn't matter what I upload, or which category!

Who the fuck is Carrie Underwood, and why does she haunt me like this???

Ha, funny enough, I recently got that 'Racist Mario' vid. Peach's face looks soo dumb.

I tend to not have a problem, as I can skim through or switch to subscriptions.

Well, so much for the nuclear option. It just showed up again. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Maybe I can develop a "frenemy" relationship with it, like Batman and the Joker. I can see it now:

"Why do you want me to click you?"

"*Giggles* Click me?! I don't want you to click me! What would I do with it?! Go back to getting easy views-no, no, NO...no, you...you COMPLETE me..."

I think she's the wife of Kevin Spacey from that time when he tried to become president of the united states.

Mine are almost exclusively videos I've already watched (usually from my subscriptions) or Amazing Atheist/Thunderf00t videos. And despite most of my videos watched being movie/TV or game related, it's almost 100% atheism videos even when It's not those two clowns.

The recommended videos has been shit since Google took over. The vast majority of the time it either gives me video I've ALREADY SEEN or videos I have zero interest in. A few years ago the recommended videos was a column on the side that changed completely everytime you refreshed. Now it only changes on refresh every FIVE MINUTES, so just browsing is impossible. Then it keep recommending me channels I purely don't want to watch, but are popular and google tries to shove them down my throat regardless of how many times I remove them.

Seriously, fuck google, bunch of moronic wankers.

OT: There was this one "Ponies the Anthology" video that stayed there for months. I watche (listened to) a song from a brony once and this thing just fucking appeared. I thought it might disappear if I clicked on it, but noooooo, it stayed and recommended me 5 more pony videos. God I hate the incessant fuckwits that took over.

I follow a lot of skeptic and atheist channels on YouTube. The result?
Tons of videos showing up for Spirit Science (an uber-new-age series aping the style of Extra Credits, talking about how crystals are alive, dreams are real, Jews are from space and the Illuminati are not only real but are Martians, and it's 100% serious) and other similar new-agey channels, plus a constant barrage of Christian and pseudo-scientific advertisements, from all the typical "Doctors hate this woman for revealing the one secret for eternal health" to "Buy this book to reveal all the macrocodes in the Bible for just 59,99!".

It's grating, to say the least, but I don't turn off the advertisements because the content creators need the money. As for the recommendations, I cannot do anything about those short of getting a new computer and ISP so that Google would need to start a new algorithm on my browsing habits...

Nostalgia- the pain gained by remembering the wonderful times, way back when, when we could actually delete unwanted videos from the Recommended segment. Sigh.

The only odd thing i found among suggested videos is kids reactions to 'queen - bohemian rhapsody', i don't remember ever watching any such videos where brats react to things, but i did listen to the song last week.

I used to have that problem with a video entitled "N1netendowow" or some such bollocks; judging by the little thumbnail picture, it was apparently Furry pornography as it apparently depicted some anthropomorphic character in the process of removing a bikini.

Although its not for Youtube, this kind of thing ticks me off on DeviantArt, where I can be reading 40K fan-fics (or even checking over and editing my own) and *every single recommended* story is some bloody Axis Hetalia gay harem fic or "Pregnant Captain America X Midget Ethnic Teenage Reader" self-insert wank fantasy.

The worst is when it's an interesting thumbnail (and I will admit, good looking women wearing a small amount of clothing is included in this) and then you click the video and realise it's either some lame ass talking about shit, or something that's just entirely unrelated to the thumbnail. Misleading and a waste of my time is what it is, I tell 'ye.

In fairness, Spirit Science is about as grounded in reality as Extra Credits.

I got a few of these for a little while, but in YouTube's defense, it was probably because I had been watching Martymer's "Why Do People Laugh at Spirit Science" series.

Maybe they thought I wanted to see the fail for myself?

Marty needs more recognition, his "Why Do People Laugh at Spirit Science" vids are the funniest thing ever.

And if we are at spirit science, I once had the entire Space Jew video (as in, the ENTIRE hour long video) show up as the advertisement... before a Marty video! Apparently the YouTube advertisement algorithms are either stupid as fuck or they have one hell of a sense of humor...

Racist Mario is actually a rather funny video. You should give it a watch if you really do want to see Mario get destroyed.

I watch the following content on Youtube

-Dark souls and Dark souls 2 content
-Team Fortress 2 content
-League of Legends content
-Dota 2 content
-Escapist content

Notice how none of those things contain Minecraft. Yet for some reason I have 6 suggested videos all of which want me to watch a 25 year old male putting on a 12 year old voice playing Minecraft to amuse children.

Excuse me mr Stampy bloody long head I do not want to watch any of your phoned in bollocks I'd rather watch things I find entertaining. So yeah, can Youtube sort their act out and suggest content that is relevant to us already.

As for Racist mario, it's a quick laugh I guess.

Finally, hello Escapist I'm back ... AGAIN

They constantly suggest videos that are "popular in my country" which only makes me question intelligence, taste and sanity of my fellow countrymen (more than I already do).
