I know I'm probably a little late but I just found out the new races in the dawn of war expansion are going to be dark elder and sisters of battle. In my most humble opinion the most pointless races in the Warhammer world.
What I was looking for? Tyranids. Sure their resource gathering would be different and mostly based on getting bio mass or maybe just requisition if they're feeling lazy. I don't know. After taking on the job of turning the table top game to the computer they've done a good job (even with their ups and downs) but by not adding in the Tyranids they are taking out a huge part of the warhammer universe.
Hell, the dark elder are almost discontinued.
Your thoughts?

Those two races are my favourites (well, I hate DE fluff but I love their mechanics. And spikes. The SoB are awesome in that I have a thing for flamers). Frick yes, this is awesome.

I agree that the Tyranids would be a more iconic choice than the Dark Eldar, and although people keep saying that there is an official quote somewhere that states that it is impossible to make Tyranids work in the current engine, I say it isn't.

Tyranids are like a swarm, so why not *make* them into one? Sure, you can't have the full fury of a Nid army on the map at once, but perhaps if their weaker units had vastly reduced build times and were created fully reinforced, it would allow Tyranid players to simulate the endless waves of resource-consuming death.

Obviously their weaker units would have to be weaker than the units of other races in order to compensate, in order to preserve balance, but since when has that been a bad thing? It might be a way of turning them into an army that requires micromanagement in order to work at their full effectiveness.

As for the species that *were* chosen? Well, I suppose it all really depends on the single-player campaign. Are they the races that were best linked to the campaign? Probably, and I could see it involving psykers in a big way (Soulstorm, therefore souls, the warp, psykers, etc.)

To cut a long story short, it doesn't really matter. The Tyranids are iconic enough that either we'll see them in a new game or expansion, or there'll be a mod completed about them. Case in point: The Daemonhunters. They're more than just Grey Knights, who are more than just a single unit choice for the Space Marines.

That reminds me, though. Other than Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm both had two races added to the mix. That's why I believe that any new game or expansion that features the Tyranids could also feature the Ordo Xenos, the Alienhunters.

I believe I read somewhere that Relic thinks the game engine is not powerful enough to render the Tyranids convincingly. I suppose they tried and didn't like the results. Still a pity, though.
There should be a mod for this but I don't know whether it is any good.

There is a mod for this, actually. I cannae remember where it is; all I remember is my friend (a lifelong and rabid 'nid supporter) told me about it.

The current engine is not powerfeul enough, no. If you see, every basic unit is the same bipedal humanoid, making rendering them all very easy. You can use the same motions and all that, and just texture differently.

'Nids are different. 'Nids are bloodthirsty animalsand their body structure is different, making rendering them that much harder.

The current mod for them renders them using the orky models, if I remember correctly. It's nothing amazing, that's for sure, but it could satisfy your hunger for xenos rampages.

THQ has said many times that creating a Tyranids army for a strategy game such as this is not possible at this time. Possibly not ever.
Imagine the complexity of it.

Here's hoping Relic is saving the Tyranids for an actual sequel.

I don't buy that they can't implement the race at all, but can understand it might not be possible with the engine for the previous games.
