Scythes? Man! Fuck Scythes! How about an electrical wire with electricity running through it, with two scythes on opposite sides. I call it.... THE SHOCKSICKLE.

The scythe is large and requires two hands and probably a fair bit of skill to wield effectively. There's also the automatic association with the Grim Reaper that's already been stated fairly often.

Why don't we just call up mythbusters and ask them to test the death dealing capacities of the major melee weapons? They can't be that busy...
I concur I'd watch that episode quick to the mythbuster site!

Death is the reaper of souls. Therefor, like a farmer he uses a scythe to reap his harvest. Death is cool, therefore looking like death by holding a scythe is cool.

Also, a scythe is still a dangerous weapon even if it is the weapon of a peeved framer.

... You guys think Judging the distance of your staff to hit the target with the small pointed end is honestly that hard (its not >.>). Even if your a little off target your going to do damage and also the scythe is a very large a menacing weapon. The fear in the back of an enemies mind when seeing someone twirling around with this weapon is great.

Youtube it. If it can cut grass with a simple motion, then a version with a stronger blade can cut a human.

Why do people act like scythes are weapons as opposed to harvesting tools?

At your most badass while holding a scythe you look like a rather annoyed farmer who could not find a shotgun or pitchfork.

Me I personally blame those guys who decided to personify death as a skeleton in robes with a scythe.
Death with a sychthe shows Death "harvesting souls"- it is not meant to have any violent connotations.

I would imagine that a syhte made for fighting would be a little different than a farming one, so as to be momre effective, but I have to agree that the association with the modern Death image is the main reason.

How about we pull a Squall and attach a shotgun to a sythe?

perhaps the idea of a scythe as a weapon came from peasant armies back in the day (a really long time ago) in times of militias where the peasants had little or no access to actual weapons, but need to quickly form defenses, they would simply have used what was available, including scythes.

Wouldn't it be quite usefull against cavalry?
It could easily take out the horse's legs leaving the rider more or less trapped underneath the squirning horse, which can't stand up anymore

Same reason pitchforks are considered a weapon. They were common, lethal, and the peasants who were levied had experience with them. Swords weren't cheap, you know. Neither was mass-producing spears.

Besides, there are some methods of scythe training that's deadly. Just like there are different scythes, some of which are better at killing.

It's all fiction and what-not so you can make scythes awesome weapons.
Do you think a gunblade (FFVIII) makes any sense what so ever?
No, and as we all know, gunblades are stupid. They are however partially grounded in reality.

Right lets get this clear. If you say "warscyth" "man reaper" or "deaths scythe" you imagine this.

Spoilered for violence to void mod annoyance.

But this doesnt work. it defeats the point of the scythe. You cannot cut someone with the inner bldae. There is no swing allowing you to do that. All you have in the end is a pointy end to swing at people, you may as well use a pickaxe. A far less baddass weapon. But with the exact same result (if not better becase a pick has better piercing power due to its slow change in width. You cannot use this scythe effectively, may as well have a lighter stronger pick axe or just a halberd.

THIS is a war scythe. Its bearly even a scythe. Its a far cry from the picture above. This is the onyl viable military use of a scythe. This can cut and stap, not just be swing in a wide arc to poke someone with a wieghted pick axe. You cannot reap a person, it DOESNT WORK. Fact, end. /thread.

Thank the Grim Reaper. It's in the name even. He reaps souls with his scythe like a farmer reaps grain.

With a few modifications, the scythe can actually make a decent weapon. It's just not a weapon you can pick up at a farm and expect to use well on the battlefield.

Swing it round someone so their head is between you and the blade, pull, -> Decapitation.

Assuming the blade was strong enough and you had the strength to pull it thorugh their bone

Because for hundreds of years a lot of people used scythes as weapons, it's the blatently obvious answer that everyone seems to be ignoring...

Well the scythe is used for harvesting grain, and death uses it to harvest souls, its an easy jump for an artist or storyteller to make. As for the weapon thing, it just looks badass to those who don't know its a farming tool.
