Build yourself up to the highest point, then turn the render distance on far. Look for anything familiar, and then travel to it.

I did do that a few times but nothing was familiar at all. I had built 4 towers made of dirt as tall as Minecraft allows near my normal territory but I never spotted any of them before that Creeper did me in.

Oooh, ouch. The first and only time that i tried this, i got lost, blown up and spawned nowhere near the fortress i had just spent the last day on. However, after about an our of wandering i actually managed to find my second nether portal that i had built, i can't even remember why. So after a brief sojourn through the nether i had reterned to my base and all was well. Sometimes stories do have happy endings.

Well, at some point Notch is planning on making your bed a spawn point, so you don't have to worry about traveling miles away and getting lost; just start a new life there! ^_^

See, every time I come into a Minecraft thread I find more reasons for me to play, and yet I simply don't have the time to do so. I really should get around to it just to see what all the fuss is about, especially now I know you can even sail around the world in the quest to craft... :D
This. I have to get this game when the college year ends.

Day 2 of my experience with the ulitmate sandbox game. I've made finally made an impenetrable fortress, have started two mining projects and have grown confident in my ability to handle threats.

Then I get on a boat.

So 3 hours after crashing into some algae I'm lost. I was an idiot and took some valuables with me so I don't want to just commit suicide and die. After spending one night in an emergency house (which was ruined by a creeper in the morning) I'm now on a different island after crashing my second boat and locked in a box made of wood with three spiders crawling around.

My question is: How can one safely navigate the waters of Minecraft and return home at sunset? I made some huge ass dirt towers around my castle but I can't see them anywhere now.

Also if you have any advice on how to get back home without dying, I'd love to hear it.

*Returns to Minecraft to probably die fighting*
Well I would map my routes with easy to follow beacons... 3 things of stacked dirt covered in torches usually works... also I would set up smaller check points with work benches beds and other things that I need along the way too and from each one I can safely explore the surrounding area or follow the path in the morning... it was rather elaborate until my data got erased in the last update...<.<

Also if I get lost I would build a small house next to anything noticeable as a sub checkpoint when exploring...

here ya go, the ESSENTIAL guide to Minecraft, every Crafter should have one.

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki

As for me, Today has been my first day in minecraft. I've already made a small fortress embedded within a mountainside, with a staircase leading to the peak with a turret on top and a dock nearby.

Personally I'm quite proud. I intend to try out some multiplayer with a friend when I get the chance, but for now I'm going to start a new game and set off on an adventure westward with just the tools on my back.

It's only really necessary when you're below ground. When above ground it's much better to take a look at the direction the clouds are travelling in - it is always North.

Yeah like that's so bad... I lost my entire world... including my stock pile of 120 diamonds, underwater castle and my 20 story hand fortress that spewed lava from each finger tip...<.<

I managed to get lost in a similar way but on the ground. I set up a little mining camp where I was to dig down and get resources for a compass, after 2 in-game days of mining I finally made my compass, and I must have been literally about 500 metres from my start location, I was so annoyed.

Another way to try and find your way is to use a program called Cartograph, it basically shows your whole map in an isometric view, so if you put down a massive square of dirt/whatever, and then use the program, you'll be able to see where you are (the massive dirt block) and where your home is (your towers)

Failing that you'll just have to start again where you are and hope to eventually find your original home.

Nope during the last update it told me I needed to convert my world so that's what I did and it started me in a completely different world...

I once got lost exploring my island-continent. Thinking I had gone in a relatively straight line, I tried just going the opposite direction to get home. No cigar.

I eventually used a program called Cartograph, it makes a detailed map of your world. I had made an arrow of dirt so I could navigate based on it's direction. Turns out I had gone in a giant circle around my base and was fairly close to it, but in a completely different direction than I had thought.

Also, you can use the skies to navigate. Sun rises in east, sets in west. Based on which way the sun is moving relative to which way it's moving when you're at home, you can tell in which direction you're going. Hope that helps.

As for sailing, try noting different landmarks on your way. A tall cliff with a tree on your right, a flat plain of sand linking two islands, anything that can help. And take it slow, I spent a few in-game days getting used to the waters in a bay south of my base, and now I can navigate pretty far and return with ease without having to bring a compass.

Godspeed!

A simple method for when you get 'a little lost'; make a mental note on where the sun rises from your home(s). Sun Rise is East, Sun Set is West =) .
If you're super lost for days..then you might as well rebuild. It can be more interesting to play when you're in the middle of no where. Dying means you may never find that place again so you're more careful. Proper Survival mode >:3

You need to start a new life on this island, and find enough materials to make a compass. Then, once you have it, you can abandon your temporary home here and set sail for your real house by following it. Remember to take spare boats.

Just how far did you go? One trick I use is to make a tower of dirt by jumping and placing a block of dirt beneath me, until im as high as I can go, and then look around for my home base. Granted, this only works if you have built something very large, or which stands out among everything else, like a lava flow/moat
