i was coming into this thread thinking, make a compass, and also make landmarks along the way so you can find your way back next time... but i've actually picked up quite a bit of good advice for myself.. so cheers

Just how far did you go?
I have no idea. I died before I could make the journey back. However, seeing as I've made 6 giant towers of dirt as landmarks around my home and I never saw it on the horizon...

I'd say I was in the middle of f*cking nowhere when I crashed my first boat.

He means iron ore, unrefined... I'm assuming.

Pig Iron is a purified iron ingot that has just been smelted and has a high carbon percentage. This means it is refined but not useful until it is further procesed. So An iron Ingot in my case.
I think I may have gotten a little to technical. O well

Take it as an opportunity to build an outpost. :)
Start from scratch again like someone else suggested. Once you find 4 iron and a redstone, build a compass and go back home leaving torches along your way so to find the outpost again in the future.

After getting lost too many times my strategies are:
1) trying to find a good location near the spawn point.
2) Building a lighthouse and signal fires on high areas around the place- basically pillars with torches on every side, 2 torches on the side facing my home.

I once got lost, then I killed myself and spawned where I originally started the game and all was well.
That only works if you don't have anything on you that you don't want to lose.
I think the most valuable thing I lost was a pumpkin. If I'm mining I wouldn't risk just dying.

I wasn't mining at the time, I was on a boat, getting lost.

When I got lost I wasn't mining either. I traveled on foot so far that when I was standing at the highest possible point, I couldn't see my towers that I built to help me find home, which were also built to the highest possible point.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on a beaches and islands world I had. Didn't know about compasses, and it ended up taking me like 2 and a half days to find my island home.

When I played Mincraft for the first time I got lost 5 times I think, I always used the sun/moon to determin which direction I came from and after searching for a long time I always found my way back but now I never go far away without a compass.

It's only really necessary when you're below ground. When above ground it's much better to take a look at the direction the clouds are travelling in - it is always North.
Well, the compass doesn't point north.
It points towards your spawn and that is most likely relatively close to his fortress, which is where he wants to go...
EDIT: Oh well, I guess you knew that...
Still, don't expect people to be able to depend on the clouds, my texture pack doesn't have any clouds.

i tend to build a giant tower of sand and put dirt on the top and cover the top with torches then jump of and comit suicide. then remove the dirt. that way you can explore a large area and always find your way back by looking for the giant fire in the sky.

after 2 in-game days of mining I finally made my compass, and I must have been literally about 500 metres from my start location, I was so annoyed.

Yeah like that's so bad... I lost my entire world... including my stock pile of 120 diamonds, underwater castle and my 20 story hand fortress that spewed lava from each finger tip...<.<
How the hell did you loose your whole world.

Hard drive fail?
Nope during the last update it told me I needed to convert my world so that's what I did and it started me in a completely different world...
That's why I back up my saves all the time. I'm paranoid that something like that will happen.

And OP, that sucks that you died in the end, but at least you've learnt from the experience. After my 2nd death from lava, I never dig the block right under me; Minecraft is really a live and learn type thing.

I made the Eye of Sauron, which guides me back home no matter where I'm at...since it's a tower of fire that reaches the heavens.

In my mine, see a HUGE obsidian deposit. Get 10 pieces of it. Creeper spawns, blows me into the lava below. I return to find everything BUT the obsidian was lost, including my three diamond picks.

Basically dig until you can make a compass and try not to leave home without it. :) And set up your main base really close to your spawn.

If you can't be bothered to place signs in caves, but still don't want to get lost - use cobblestone to wall off the tunnels that you've fully explored. That way you'll usually only have one way to go.

And read up on the recipes on the minecraft wiki. You'll learn loads of interesting stuff.

And for those of you who've lost entire worlds due to conversion or HD failure I have just one word: Backup. It's especially easy with the new format since copying a 30MB world takes just a few seconds rather than 10 minutes like it used to.
